Learning a New Hobby

I saw an ad for a Dumas 1949 19ft CHRIS-CRAFT Racing Runabout boat kit in a catalog I get as a woodworker and I decided I want to built it.  I came here to research my project.  I read the New to Shipbuilding thread to get an idea of the hurdles.  I looked through a build thread for the runabout and it mentioned a book called Mahogany in Scale; I bought the book to become familiar with the process.

 

As a woodworker I’m also trying to determine the smaller tools that I’ll need.  I’ve been looking through a Micro Mark catalog trying to decide what tools might be useful.  I’d appreciate any recommendations.

 

I’m in Minnesota, US and I’m looking into my next winter project.  I think the boat kit is something I can do (but it will probably take longer than I think).

Start small.  Some files (many of us use the disposable nail files from beauty supply houses) , sandpaper, and an Xacto (or equivalent) knife.   Add to  your tool list as needed. And of course some wood glue.

I second Marks comments in post #2 re tools. I am a bit of a tool freak. As the old saying for fishing goes " Some lures are made to catch fishermen not fish", I think the same can be said for tools. A basic kit as suggested will get you started.

I, too, live in MInnesota, so...Hello! I found useful stuff just watching other modelers on YouTube. There's piles of people who do this work and I get to see which tools they use.

Welcome! As far as tools go, I've been building models for 60yrs and have gathered so many tools in that time that there are times when I can't even find them all (some day I'll get organized - hahahaha). But to cut to the chase, there are actually only a few that I use regularly. X-acto knives, a couple of small wood files, a lot of sandpaper, a razor saws and a whole lot of elbow grease, so don't get too wrapped up in tool purchases until you definately need a tool that isn't in your tool box.

I've been reading Ship Modeling Simplified and I decided to get a more modest kit to start with. 

 

I've also been putting together a tool wish list and like JimJ mentioned, I'll be getting a X-acto knife set and a razor saw set.  Plus a couple other tools that seem useful like some small clamps.
