Colouring or varnishing masts, yards and booms etc.

Hi all, 

When it came to putting a bit of colour on my mast I initially used a brush but the end finish was dubious as brush strokes were visible, while pondering what to do to correct this my better half suggested I use a sponge as this would wrap the mast therefore colouring it in one pass with no brush marks.

Apologies if this has already been discussed.

Air brushing is a great option.

Yes, airbrush or thin the paint or paint with a brush several times. you can sand between the layers. But the easiest and best result is with airbrush.

I can imagine using a sponge is a great idea. I have used sponge for staining furnitures in the past and it worked perfect. It should work ona small scale too. A lot cheaper and easier alternative than airbrush i.m.h.o.
