harlequin Posted May 20, 2020 #1 Posted May 20, 2020 There has been quite a few builds of this model recently and I read a book several years ago about the sailors that had been exhumed that had died on Franklyn's ill fated mission.... They took tissues samples from the sailors bodies and the results show a massive content of lead in their bodies. This was put down to the canned food they took with them on the expedition which had been sealed with lead. I have included the pictures which some may find disturbing or interesting depending on your point of view. On the trip to exhume was a relative of one of the sailors. They were exhumed in 1986 and apart from tissue samples were reinterred in the same place. It is amazing how the ice has preserved these men. They had also been autopsied by the ships doctor before being buried to try to discover what had caused their deaths. Dean77, allanyed and mtaylor 3

Portsoy Posted May 21, 2020 #4 Posted May 21, 2020 Interesting to note that the amount of lead in the cadavers may not have been significantly higher than in the rest of the population of Victorian England at the time. The use of lead piping was commonplace for drinking water pipes and consequently lead levels ingested were proportionally higher. Whilst it is true there was lead used in the canned food for the first time, this may not have been the sole cause of death? One of the bodies- I think it was the Royal Marine, had been shown to have succumbed to tuberculosis . Maybe some day soon the ships log can be found and if it is in any condition for study ( a very big if) , further clues may explain what led to the tragedy.
