Santa Maria by jastrząb - FINISHED - Mantua - Scale 1:50

Recommended Posts

Hello, some of you may remember me posting this log. The kit was "inherited". My friend gave up and told he had no time to complete her.

I would like to start with the latest photos I have taken. From now on, I will be trying putting more pics for you to show the slow progress of building. I hope you 'll enjoy.

I know you know :) how to do it, however, for those who don't this is the right post.
I try to blacken the wire using a black paint. The final step was to apply a drop of CA glue.

  • 2 weeks later...

Today's progress on dead eyes. I used a black paint to cover the brass wire.  I have just ordered a blackening liquid so I hope that the results will be btter than the paint.

I think that I have achieved my goal. The dead eyes are in the line. I tried to tie the ropes carefully looking at the book written by Lennarth Pettersen.

It takes a long time to do it. The whole outlook shows her as if she was a very old vessel. That's my point to show Santa Maria as an old ship.

Here are some pics. Enjoy :)

Feel free to comment. I'd like to make this bulding log alive. Help me do this please.

this is kinda unique.........this type of outer framework.   did you gouge the outer surface of the hull yourself?   you would have done well to use Obechi.......it's already done for you.   I use basswood quite a bit.......but I have gotten some kits where this wood is used.   it's very hard to sand all of the imperfections out of it.   you've done very well to give her the  'hewn' look.   at what stage of the assembly did you get her?  keep up the good work  ;)

I yam wot I yam!

Billings Nordkap 476 / Billings Cux 87 / Billings Mary Ann / Billings AmericA - reissue

Phylly C & Denny-Zen - the Lobsie twins - bashed & semi scratch dual build

Thank you for your comment Matti. The progress is rather slow because the main shrouds are really time-consuming.

Moreover, it was nice to read you liked the outlook. I will try to post more tutorial pictures, however, any comment and idead are most welcome :)

Thanks again :)

Popeye, thanks a lot for popping in :) I got her with attached frames to the hull and the decks which were fully planked.

There are a lot of imperfections but it makes her look more natural I think.

The wood I used for the planking was a mixture of mahogany and one more I forgot. The planks on the bulwarks I prepared using the wood from a very old model of Santa Maria (probably made in Czech Republic many years ago).

In the end I'm going to cover her with one layer of oil to get the right colour of the wood.

Regards,

Paweł

I'd like to show you the attached sails by Mantua. In fact, they are glossy and disastrous ;) I have decided to change the material. In the pics you can compare the original sheet with a chosen by me.

I had to drawthe size of the sails in pencil onto my material and I started sewing by hand.

Any comments are most welcome (traditionally).

OK Matti, I'll consider it. Maybe I'll do an experiment on a spare wood and we can see the new look :)

Finally the metal parts are finished. I know they are not in the straight line... But I think they look better than suggested by the manufacturer. The are painted. The next project (HMS Pandora) will be done with a blackener amd by me from the very beginning :)

Tea huh? That works? If not go for hobby acrylics paint. Im used to Vallejo, but the cheap hobby acrylics (flat) Ive tried works as well. I just like to use what I know works. Just drop of black and bigger drop of brown in water (amount like maybe half a glass). Apply with brush and wait a few minutes to dry. Repeat til you are happy. You can then drybrush them, id go with gray on that subject. When replicating metal, add some rust brown here and there, where it looks natural. If doing that, add the drybrush coat last.

Sorry if I gave tips that you allready know of.

Looking forward to see updates!

/Matti
