Santa Maria by jastrząb - FINISHED - Mantua - Scale 1:50

Recommended Posts

Nevertheless, I didn't mean to reef it aloft. Therefore, there is a ray of hope for it to look like from a by-gone era.

A couple of pics showing the footropes and stirrups.

The stirrups are made by sewing the rope with a needle. Then they are coiled round the yard.

The rope that is used as a footrope has been done by myself. It looks better than the ropes from the kit ( I thinks so at least  :dancetl6: )

Thanks Popeye; it's always nice to read kind words. I'm glad you like it.

Now I'm re-considering sewing another sail. A friend of mine told me about the ropes on the sail and I must agree they are a bit over-scaled. What do you - my friends think of that?

Another solution would be to use a hard pencil (6H) and point the dots along the sail cloth to imitate the gores (?)

you could make a new sail if you wish......it's good practice.   as a rule anyway........most sails are out of scale in some way or another,  so we try to portray them as best we can.   as long as you used threads {ropes}  that are comparable to the sails,  it should be alright.

Hey, come on now, you're cheating. Footropes tut!tut! But very nicely done.

I like the way you give instructional hints for others, too. Sometimes we see stuff we like on builds but have no idea how it was done.

Sometimes I have to cheat ;)  because the scale is not appropriate to do all the detalis like in reality.

If it helps anyone to do these parts, go ahead. I also took it from someone else's building log ( I forgot the name) and modified it a bit...

  • 3 months later...

After a long break, I'd like to show you what I have done recently. Finally the sail has been attached to the yard. The yard is on its position :) I'm going to leave the sails fully visible - it makes her look gracefully (my opinion).

Any comments - go ahead :)

Hi jastrząb

... are those sails made of fabric? are these vertical stripes sutures? was it attached in the kit made in such a form?

Hi MarisStella,

The sails that were attached to the kit were awful. I have replaced them with my material ( a sort of canvas). The vertical stripes have been done by me. If you don't mind - rewind some pages and there are pictures of sewing them.

right jastrząb !

usually it is a problem ... you've done  fantastic sails .. it seemed strange to me that such a well-made sails are placed in the kit :) .... If you did not mind, please, take a look at this ... this kind of sail we put the Santa Maria  kit...

Otherwise ... you've done this model very well ... congratulations on the sails ...

I am very pleased that you like their look ... it's a computerized embroidery ... all samples are identical, they have to be ... sometimes it happens that in some series the color of thread is a little different, that's all the difference ... the interesting thing is that the color of embroidery is the same on the both sides of the sails ... we put the sails made of embroidered fabrics in all our kits ...

Thanks Friends for your nice comments. They give me a positive kick to do the next steps :)

Vivian, I'll try to post some more new photos soon, however, there is an obstacle - football matches on TV... What about the atmosphere in Brazil?

MarisStella - I know this technique but for one sail it turns out to be pretty costly

Mhegazi - thamks for your comments. I like when someone likes what I do :)

Popeye - It's nice to read kind words (as always). The sails took me sooooo many hours... But they are far better than the attached ones ;)

Regards,

Paweł

Well, today it starts - Brazil x Croatia - Mixed feelings about it in here. Some ppl are complaining about the cost of it, others are using it to criticize government. Probably the majoraty just waiting for the games itself. For me, I´ll watch the games with no enthusiasm, but hoping Brazil wins the cup.

Today I have been treating my Santa Maria with oil. The outcome is really nice. The wooden elements have darkened, giving SM a new look.
