I have had a hard time soldering a bracket on a  brass cannon. I used silver bearing solder paste then I used tinning flex and with solder wire using a soldering iron I got one soldered and painted black. there hast to be a easier way. D Cobb help

Are you trying to solder on trunnions (the pegs that are on either side of a cannon)? It may be far easier to drill a hole through the body of the cannon, insert a suitable length of rod and solder this into the hole, or simply use epoxy glue. It will be nearly impossible to solder two separate pieces exactly in line on either side of the cannon.

If you are using silver solder, a soldering iron is of no use.  You need the higher heat only attainable with a torch.  Most silver solder paste has flux in the paste; actually, the flux is what makes it a paste.
