No, the photo predates the Vestal - reported to be sometime prior to October 1909 based on the known history of modifications to the one in the background.

I'm affraid we need a higher resolution pic to be able to read the name on the bow.

As far as I discovered she's one of four sisters.

No way of checking which one. They all look very much alike

Correct Kevin.

 

The writing on the photo reads: "The old "Chance", as man of war, merchantman, and whaler for over one hundred years. In her last resting place. Bluff, N.Z."

She was owned by Samuel Nichol of Bluff, N.Z. She finished her days as a coal hulk – this was probably when the wind generator was installed. I think she might have been the Chance that managed to escape the ice in the great Whaling disaster of 1871.

well one part is right - lol it's not the subs name- infact i cannot see shrug as any nations named vessel

That's just it.. they all look the same... its like putting up a picture of a black car and asking who owns it...

 

Unless it did something drastically famous... (why I guessed Conqueror..)
