I grew up in Humboldt County and spent part of my adulthood working in the woods of Humboldt and Mendocino Counties, tromping around in the redwoods once owned by the Falk Brothers, PALCO, Carson & Dolbeer, USAL, and other companies that shipped lumber aboard Bendixsen-built schooners. I would dearly love to see a kit of her developed -- would probably even pry the padlock off my wallet for one! You know there have to be detailed lines and drawings made during her reconstruction -- a trove of resources for any potential designer. You can do it. The complete plans are available on line for free, even in TIFF format, so they can be enlarged for modeling use. I have been aboard a couple of times and would like to go back again. There are other historic ships there too - and of course San Francisco and a lot of good restaurants. It is a great place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there! My son lives in San Francisco. He loves living there and my wife and I visit him fairly often. He's a young professional with a great job at Google and the city is an exciting place for him with such a great offering of world class fine arts, an amazing music scene, restaurants of every ethnic variety, wonderfully diverse neighborhoods with beautiful parks with stunning vistas and a fabulous waterfront. Yes, it's very expensive and traffic can be a nightmare and, of course, it has it's own social problems just like any other major city but we think it is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. There's also the Giants, the 49ers and the Warriors too! It's hard to believe, after all the time we've spent in San Francisco, that we've never been down to the Hyde Street Pier and explored the ships there. Visiting the C. A. Porter Shaw Library nearby at Fort Mason, a valuable resource for ship modelers looking for plans and photographs, all part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area which incorporates all the waterfront from the Hyde Street Pier to the Golden Gate Bridge. There's also a resident ship model club aboard the ferry Eureka that has an interesting website that's worth checking out. See: Hyde Street Pier Model Shipwrights (hspms.org) Additionally, the San Francisco Model Yacht Club, devoted to sailing models has its own clubhouse and pond yacht lake in Golden Gate Park.
