Another Black Pearl build thrown into the ring🙄

I know there are quite a few and I have read the posts I could find. I stand on the shoulder of giants as the saying goes as I get the benefit of seeing others make these kits. This is my first ship build and I am a newby here so I appreciate any help and direction. Apologies if my ship anatomy is incorrect.

I have started the kit pre Covid and then stopped.
so here we go

Let’s move along so we can catch up to where I am

Covid came and I got bored and purchased a 3D printer. One of the files I got was an excellent Capt Jack Sparrow

So I printed him out and painted using acrylics and oils. I plan on using him displayed with the completed Pearl.

Okay, so this may be your first ship model, but man, you have painted before!

That Cap'n looks extraordinary.

Keep it up!

Happy modelling!

Next up…I made a lot of cannons.

Like a lot of cannons. 32 in total I think it was

The Pearl’s cannons are used and abused, not shiny and perfect so I kept them a bit on the grimy side as I will with most of this build

Throw in some more 3d resin printing

Found some files for barrels and boxes so printed those out and painted them

Also found some generic sailors files to modify into the pirate crew…had some wonky errors and lost some limbs so will re-print those

The grey ones are my resin printing, the green figure is a “Caribbean Pirate” eBay purchase kit and the tan ones are HO scale train people

Ok here we start going a little sideways

The kit bulkhead is weak to be polite

it looks nothing like the Pearl’s Bulkhead shown here

So we print out some window frames and cut out four windows and a wider door into the kitbulkhead

cue the slippery slope to a lot more work coming🙄

and Capt Jack can skip away happily on deck knowing he will have a more realistic bulkhead to his quarters

The kit staircase is next.

The staircase balusters are very skinny and inaccurate. There are not enough stair treads in the steps by half. The finale turn is plain.

The upper railing has nicer baluster supports 🤔maybe I could copy those

My 3d printer was awaiting a part so I made some balusters out of resins and styrene on my makeshift battery Dremel

so I hand turned a whole bunch in the different materials

Hi Scott,   Excellent start on the Pearl,   I built her  a  few years back  (The  Revell kit)   that  I think is  basically the same kit as yours,  I did  quite a few  alterations  to enhance  her  and make her more solid  like  putting  wood dowels  inside the masts  to  give them some strength,  and  making the  spars  from  wood  dowels  also, as the plastic ones  will  bend  under  rigging strain.

I also  replaced the  plastic  rat lines  for  thread, and added  thread  for the gun lid  lowering  devices.

I posted my build  in here  check it out  if you need  and pointers  -

Thank you for your comment Mr OC. Yes indeed I believe the Revell and the Vzezda kit are identical save the box art

I certainly have looked at your amazing build and read it through, made references and got some great pointers

Very much appreciate you looking at my build and as I said, I stand on the shoulders of giants…one of those is yourself and your great build

We are getting close to full catch up progress

This will be the curved rail and the end baluster …turned  from styrene with a styrene circle base and top

Heat bending styrene is much like herding cats . I would have preferred to use metal or wood, but here we are.

Inspiration from a design in 3D for smart people who use their printer

So I decided to do a light tan primer and then oil paints overtop in effort to make a wood appearance

Ochre and burnt umber oils specifically, lighter where walking and use occur, darker in corners.

And then a black oil paint added for accents

I cannot for the life of me remember what inspired me to have this specific look

Excelent work weathering the decks,  they  would have been  quite bad as legend in the film  says  she was  set on fire then  sent down to the sea bed to Davey Jones Locker  before being  brought  up.

Keep it going Scott  -  excellent work,    You really can't  go  over the top  with  weathering  the Pearl,  and the figures.

Scott  with the  figures  if they are the same set  I got, I found the plastic  to be  very soft and  almost  greasy  (like the old Airfix figures)   so  after  triming back the  seams  a  good  Primer  is  key.

Here we go off the deep end again

Read a bit about making deadeyes in here. Discussion on face cutting Vs lathe operations helped me immensely.

A comment about how much your time is worth is very wise…unfortunately I am both frugal and stupid

There are 130 ish deadeyes for the Black Pearl. Their diameter is 6mm I have a 6mm and 9mm plug cutter for use on the drill press

my two plugs. I popped out ten wood plugs in about 15 mins. It is very doable time wise

ok so 6mm plugs, 9mm are way too big. I can easily make the three holes in them in my little jig vise.

The wood is from  wood scrap exotic bits I have had forever…possibly Osage  orange wood. It makes me itch and tickles my throat so

I know it is exotic at least to my immune system. Yes I got the respirator on for cutting.

The real problem is finishing and getting the groove in their centers.
They are impossible to spin on a lathe with off center holes. Will have to figure that out🤔

suggestions welcome

With the centre groov  I would  use a  small  v shape  file  and  work  it around.
