I had all good intentions on waking, as did The Admiral

I have a question

There are quite a few gaps between the frames and the deck

 

 

There is planking at the bow and stern but from what I can see from the instructions nothing round the edge

Should I make these gaps look good and if so now??????

Do I just fill them or do I make it good with planking

I am really not sure and advice would be well received from anyone who has had this problem

The only thing I can see that may hide them slightly, but not much, is a railing on top of the hull

 

 

I will be making a concerted effort to get the hull perfectly smooth so it looks like steel and not wood

I have a nice grey to do the upper hull and I will get a red oxide for below the waterline

The actual pinkey colour of the protecting paint is not available and as I have no photos of it I am not going to try and replicate it

The modern photos I have of the Will shows a red oxide type paint so that will do fine

 

So come on then all

What do I do with those gaps ????????????????????????????????????????

Hi Mick.

 

Don't use the plastic parts supplied as this is what happens. (The wind from a passing fly pharting and it's down)!

I found that with the gaps between the deck and frames, and that with a bit of careful measuring of the deck planks lengths, that there was no real problem.

 

I can not recall the word for this strip but I used a thin piece of wood (after planking the deck), on the planking and against the side.

 

One thing I did find very annoying and frustrating was constructing the brass rudder (rod) mechanism that connects to the rudder and goes into the wheel-house. IMHO there is no need to do as per drawing but you may find a better way to do so.

Good question Eamonn  

They are not nice holes for filling as they are 'bottomless' as it were   

So they may sink on drying and need several applications

You see on the drawing where the planking is on the bow and it is a similar distance on the stern

I will wait for some more responses and then come to some sort of a decision

I think I see what you mean Ron

Yes planking the inside of the hull would make life easier I guess and I do have plenty of planking

As to the plastic parts, I have already replaced the deadeyes and blocks

I will see how the others pan out as they come

I finished the guitar today 

I am waiting for a nice sunny day to get some nice photos to really show off the flip paint finish

 

I did a bit on the Will as well

I had a look and tried putting 1mm plank round the inside 

I wasn't happy

So I tried 2mm

Much better 

 

 

I will let that dry right off then sand it level

I will then smooth off the inside with filler

I sometimes wonder how people do it

I am fairly limited where I can sand because of the dust

I thought I had it sanded pretty good but when I got it back under the spotlights I have set up over my work table in the bedroom it just showed how bad it was   

 

Anyway I have filled and cleaned off round the top of the hull and sanded for ages, with what looks like a lot more to do 

 

 

It was really annoying as it was quite dull out when I wanted to do the sanding so I had to do it in the hall

Now the sun is shining as it was this morning when I was doing something else   

Oh well, these things are sent to try us

I will have to fit up some spotlights in the hall

All that just to do a bit of sanding

It's not the easiest thing but I am getting there

Before you are using the paint brush, give the hull first a layer of ground paint ( If that's the right word for it ) 

Then you see every imperfections......

It not looks that bad at all !

Can wait till the hull is finished but I'll have to wait......

Been very busy and no time for anything   

I have bought a new airbrush though with multiple nozzles and needles so it will work properly unlike my old one where I mixed nozzles and needles   

That just don't work   

I am getting a fine nozzle and needle for that so when everything arrives I should be able to do everything

So I am waiting for my new airbrush to arrive before I do a lot more

I won't say they are that complicated but if everything doesn't fit perfectly they just won't spray properly

And the needles in them are as sharp as any tattoo gun

I am working hard trying to get the hull nice and smooth with the right colour

 

 

As you can see I am getting a slight problem with runs

My plan is to use this paint to get a perfect base

I have just sent off for some Vallejo airbrush paint as they have a fantastic range

I have got Light Sea Grey and Hull Red

They were the ones that most closely matched the ship as she is how

Also being proper airbrush paint I shouldn't get the same problem with runs as I did with the paint I had to thin myself

Going to take my time on this as it is important to get a good finish on a metal hull

I love where this is going Mick, and to think this is a wooden planked hull!! I have never seen airbrushing done on a ship (have of course heard it mentioned here on MSW, just never seen it from the ground up as it were) why is there a difference between what you mixed yourself and 'proper' store bought spray paint? .. is it consistency or is the paint itself actually different? I assume (a dangerous thing to do ) that the base coat is very important from a colour and finish point of view (hope you don't mind all the questions here in one go )

What happened with the last mix that ran was that it was a shade too thin

Normally when airbrushing the paint dries quite quickly

If it is a bit thin and I put a bit too much on.........Runs

 

As to the colour of the base coat it is best if it is slightly lighter, but it doesn't matter too much if it is quite a bit lighter

You just may need an extra spray

What it doesn't want to be is a fair bit darker as it will affect a lighter colour

 

Just to let you all know I had a bit of a fall today and bruised my ribs so I may be a bit in an out of here

Getting a bit frustrated as the paints I ordered for the hull have not arrived

I can commiserate with that 'where's the postman feeling'! (am waiting for a replacement for a missing bulwark from my Sherbourne kit, seems the first replacement went adrift in the post, so this is a replacement for the replacement, no 'biggy' for me as I  won't be starting for a few months at the least, though I would rather have the piece than be waiting on it)

Sorry to hear about your injuries (I didn't want to give your post from 20th November a 'Like' as it would sound like I 'Liked' your accident.. if you follow me )

Well

You know me 

I can't sit still 

I started the planking in the stern

It seemed to take forever as it is only 3mm wide 

It was a shade tricky as well

 

 

I am debating now whether to 'caulk' it

I personally am not sure it would improve it

However if there is someone out there who thinks it has to be caulked I will listen to reason 

Hopefully I will get the bow planking done tomorrow

I may then start the planking strips around the top of the hull

Not sure if they are still called gunwales or whether that is purely the name on a gunned up vessel

Really good day today

Things went well

The first thing I did was finish off the fore and aft deck planking

 

 

Still not sure about a bit of pencil caulking   

I then put the planking on the top edge of the hull and fitted the fore and aft railings

 

 

It all went together quite well

I didn't attempt to curve the hull edge planking but did small cuts and will touch up and paint to hide

So all in all pleased with a good day   

Still getting pain spasms in my ribs though   

I really need that paint now  :mellow:

You are not caulking the deck ?

I think it looks more for real when you are doing that.

When your ribs allowed it to you, do some caulking....

Thing is, these workboats often had paint slapped over the decks. You'd not see wood (or caulking, for that matter) through a few mm of grey deck paint.

That is my thinking

I need to decide if I am building it as a work barge, or how it is now, a corporate meetings/away day ship

The paint finish could be either as I think it had similar colours at some point during it's working life and is definitely that colour in the most modern photos I have

 

I suppose that a work barge would possibly be a little 'dirtier' than a corporate vessel

But I may be wrong, the seamen may be very proud of their vessel

I will have a ponder

I won't be doing much today as I am off to hospital to see the physiotherapists

Tough decision there Mick, 'to paint or not to paint, that is the.. etc'.  Almost seems a shame to cover a nice wooden deck though (admittedly Work Boats are after all 'WORK' Boats and a painted deck is easier to maintain than a plain timber affair  ) Just a thought but some ships have a darkish green deck (we used to call it 'Deck Green', great 'naming' imagination on show there! ) but it gave a pleasant contrast to the Coaming and the Sides, though I have seen grey and even red used extensively too. I think it will look great whichever way you go

Later Edit : Strange coincidence has just popped into my head, I was only early this morning remembering the favoured colours my Dad put onto one particular boat many years ago.. Tangerine (don't ask ) and Dove Grey! with the grey going in a thick band at the waterline and covering the wooden decks!!

hey Mick,

 

gee....I wished I had seen your build earlier.....I have a good suggestion for the bulwark dilemma.   my first build was the Nordkap by Billing's.  having never built one before,  I ran into the same problem.  it was a printed deck, so I traced out the waterways and made a pair for it.....worked very well.   I was just real careful how the cuts at the posts were......lots of fitting.  if you have the panel that the deck platforms came from,  you could have done the same.

 

painting the deck was not a hard rule.......I believe it to be the desire of the Captain,  although I have seen quite a few that were painted.

    you would have to find out more info on the W.E. to see what it had.

 

I airbrush quite a bit........I got back into it after seeing how large these hulls were     I have a simple Testor's airbrush system.  I adapted it to run off my large compressor....run it just once,  and I have enough air to do the entire job.  the Testor's airbrush is not fancy,  so I make up for it,  with how i mix my paints.  thin paint is good......light coats delivered in sessions,  but for thicker paint,  I up the air a little,  and it does well with that {it's a siphon system}.   I use enamels only.......model master for flats,  and Testor's and Billing's for gloss.   I've tried others,  but they  don't have the gloss quality and  suspension.   the billing's paint gives a nice hard finish,  very hard to nick or dent

 

I couldn't agree more on the fitting choices..........I have quite an inventory of those plastic blocks.   I'm making a scratch built trawler, so I can use them up       what I don't like in plastic,  I make out of wood.........sounds like you have a direction that your going to go.   they are a nice kit though......with a little tweaking,  they look even better!   I'll enjoy watching your build.....building what 'seems' to be a beginner's kit.   coupled with those instructions.......there's nothing beginner about it......heck,  they'd confuse anybody! :D   but,  that I think is why I like the Billing's kits....they are quite challenging

I may not get it until towards the end of next week so I will take it day by day

My ribs are still fairly sore and the Physio has given me some exercises to do to help my back

  Hello Mick,  regarding painting the Deck planking you have probably made the right choice in deciding to paint it since you are representing it in its original form.. According To Edgar March on page 199 of his book "Spritsail barges of the Thames and Medway" the decks  were often made of 3" thick pine caulked and then painted on both sides. He also observes that on the best quality  construction the deck planks were laid in continuous length Of course in the floating gin palaces that many of the survivors have now become the decks would be  pretty  with varnished hardwood.

Hi Mick,

 

I bought the Will Everard a little while ago and bashed her into the barge "Edme". Fortunately these boats because of their similarity lend themselves to that.

 

My home town has a history in building these boats and the Edme was one of them, built in 1896 she still sails out of St Osyth which is about 14 miles from me, as a charter boat.

 

Very few of theses boats have detailed plans or drawing as they were built by eye and experience by Master Shipwrights as you may have already found out.

 

The Will Everard and Edme still to this day race on a regular basis along with many other barges of the same era.

 

Hope you get your paint soon mate, it can be frustrating having to wait and wait.
