rkre88 Posted April 20 Share #1 Posted April 20 Hi all, I'm new here. First build log. Got back into modeling of late and finally joined the forum. I tinkered around a bit with some other kits to build some skills and I feel like this one is where the practice and patience is starting to pay off. I actually kind of feel guilty about how well this kit has gone, almost too easy. Anyone else have experience with this kit? Zero flash. All parts have fit perfectly so far. I know this is not how it usually is. I have been bumbling my way back into the hobby and have made lots of mistakes and am probably still doing things incorrectly, so constructive criticism is welcome from all of you, masters. Obviously I need to do a lot of touch up painting. One question I have is how to paint the masts? The instructions say to paint everything brown, but I think that looks kind of dumb and probably isn't accurate. Any suggestions or good sources to go to for ideas? Starting this build log part way into the project already, so apologies for no earlier pictures. But here is where it lies today. There are different colour schemes I think since the masts even have been replaced over time. Here is a picture by Prayash Panthi from the current Cutty Sark in Greenwich at the museum. This is just rebuild after burnt down twice so if the colour scheme they used is acurate? I don´t know. But when you search in the LOGs you can find some really well done jobs of the Cutty Sark in different styles, plastic and wood and even scratch builds. Depends on your preference tbh. They are not raised enough to bring them out nicely with dry brushing gold. Or maybe my skill just isn't there yet. Excuse the bleeding white from the pinstripes. My workshop behind my garage has two doors which were both open and it got super windy. You can guess what happened. It actually looks kind of cool, like it just went through battle! rkre88 Posted May 6 Author Share #10 Posted May 6 Quick update. Got some rigging done on the main mast and attached most of the preformed ratlines. The supplied thread is garbage. Will be ordering some good stuff on my next build. The rigging isn't the tightest, but once I rig the main to the fore, it should tighten up. Just need to add the draft and stern decals and attach the anchors. Giving it to my brother tomorrow as a thank you gift. Where to next? You'll find the 1/96 a whole different beast that opens up a world of options 🤯 - just do a search and you'll find all the different options and methods that people are using from out of the box to huge kit bashes. As has been suggested, look at the one by Bruma, and the Ferreira build by rwiederrich, but don't limit to just those. Snug Harbor Johnny Posted May 26 Share #14 Posted May 26 A nice job, and I'm familiar with the 1:150 kit - which turned out to be just a little smaller than my not-so-nimble fingers could accommodate. There is a 1:120 scale Cutty Sark (I reviewed the Monogram version) that one can occasionally find where there are TWO sets of yards ... one with extended studding sail booms, and one with them retracted. If the nearly 3' long Revell Cutty seems on the large size, the 1:120 Japanese version (if you can find one) could suit. The tool and die work is nice, and the deck level with respect to the gunwale is correct. (The 1:96 version has the deck positioned higher with respect to the gunwale, which makes the cabin roofs rise higher than the original ship.) Yet 1:96 DOES allow for more detailed rigging and other options. Rob Wiederrich demonstrates that just a little material can do for furled sails atop the yards (as they would be in harbor). With or without furled sails, the upper topsail yard would be lowered close to the lower - so the 'lifts' would be taught. The topgallant and royal yards would also be lowered. When raised, the 'lifts' droop, as there is no tension. Congratulations on your build ! Pros: Absolutely zero flash (not a bit!), everything fit great for the most part, nice detail for the deck boards, the yards were all one piece which made things easier (this did make painting more of a challenge). Cons: Plastic ratlines make the kit look a bit cheap, the designs in the hull were not distinct enough to get a good result when dry brushing the gold so I had to leave them black, there are no aftermarket parts (photoetch etc.) available for the kit that I could find. Overall a great kit at a good price. $63 on Amazon. They are going for north of $100 on eBay for whatever reason.
