AJohnson Posted January 29 #1 Posted January 29 (edited) I have started a nice easy "Non-ship" build while I am waiting for the garage to warm up and I can return to making sawdust with my HMS Sparkler build. My health has not been brilliant this last couple of months, so being out in the cold garage is not appealing at the moment. I got this one off FleaBay reasonably priced and intend to build in OOB with the exception of some P.E. seatbelts. This might be something of a quick build, as I have started it this weekend gone and it is just flying together -just what the Doctor ordered! 😁 I have built Airfix's 1/72 version of this and there are many similarities between the kits, and both go together well. I won't say anything about the Defiant, as a great discussion on the Defiant was included in Andy's @realworkingsailorexcellent build log of the 1/72 version here:- https://modelshipworld.com/topic/33924-boulton-paul-defiant-mk-1-nf-by-realworkingsailor-finished-airfix-172/#comment-965615 I'm going to finish mine in the colours of No.2 (Army Cooperation) Squadron, based at Hatfield Woodhouse, South Yorkshire in September 1940, for no other reason it was based in my home County of Yorkshire and the squadron code "KO" were the maiden initials of the Admiral! A few pictures of the kit contents and the progress made on the cockpit. I have now moved on to the mini-kit of the gun turret. ccoyle Posted January 29 #2 Posted January 29 I have a card model version of this aircraft, but I don't have a molded canopy or turret for it. Scratch-building those bits looks a very daunting task! If you have never read the novel Piece of Cake by Derek Robinson (I recommend it), one of the central characters meets his end in a Defiant. Canute Posted January 30 #3 Posted January 30 I'll second Chris's recommendation. I've been fascinated with the Battle of Britain, ever since I was a young 2nd Lieutenant. There's also a video of this book.I watched in on our Public Broadcasting Network. AJohnson Posted February 4 Author #4 Posted February 4 Next instalment, completed the gun turret structure, this was a fun bit of the build and consisted of about 20 parts on its own. Shame it is all black and buried in the aft cockpit , so most of it will be hidden. The turret glazing is only temporary and I will probably use the optional glazing that has the doors open, so you can see at least a little of the interior. The fuselage and wings went together no problem and only a little filler required around the wheel wells and wing roots. Everything has had its first coat of primer, (AK rattle can) just a few small areas to sort before pre-shading and then painting starts. While that is underway I will also set-to masking the clear parts and assembling the undercarriage. A Good Clean Fight set in the Western Desert is probably my favorite alan Egilman, Old Collingwood, Canute and 1 other 4
