Greetings, I'm 49 years old and live in Fort Worth, TX. I have been building models most of my life. I got heavily into RC Cars and airplanes in my 20's and 30's but with kids, there is little time to play with these machines.

My wife needlepoints every night and I've been jealous she has a productive hobby she can unwind with in the evening.

I was always intimidated with the thought of wooden modeling, but after reading quite a bit on MSW, that there was access to this hobby starting as a beginner.

My first purchase was the Model Shipways Grand Banks Dory. I have nearly completed planking the hull, and I love it!

I know this is an entry kit, but it has me very excited to finish this one up and move onto my next project.

MSW seems to be the perfect spot to have landed with lots of resources and helpful experienced builders.

Cheers MSW! I;m so exited to have found a new hobby!!!!!

WW, welcome to MSW. Some great memories of Ft Worth, you're probably too young to remember "The Cellar". Glad to have you aboard.

Oh, there is an RC segment in this hobby, too, to be sure! RC builds are tagged with the word RADIO.

Have fun!

Welcome @WWR4

I tried years ago to get into wood ship modeling, but my first one was very frustrating, and I finally gave up on it.  A few years ago, when I retired, I thought I would try it again.  Thankfully I started like you did with the GB Dory, then moved on to the other two Model Shipways Shipwright learning trio, the Norwegian Sailing Pram and the Muscongus Bay Lobster Smack.  I learned a lot from these that have given me the confidance and skills to try more difficult models.

I hope you enjoy building these model ships.  There will be times you want to quit as you build more complicated ships, but take a break and then resume.

Have fun.

Spent plenty of nights in my 20's at The Cellar, Keith! Great times!

I was born in Dallas, grew up in Arlington, and for time I lived in Ft Worth after getting out of the Marine Corp. After moving back to Texas from Alaska we lived in Dallas. When I would travel to Ft Worth from Dallas upon crossing 820 I could feel a palatable difference in the air, so much more relaxed. I enjoyed some great dinning down at the stockyards. But alas, IT'S TOO DANG HOT! :)

Glad to have you aboard. There are many excellent modelers at MSW who willingly share their advice to other modelers.  Enjoy your ship modeling journey.  The fun is in the journey not just the destination.  Hope to see some of your modeling work sometime.
