WATTLE by iaincwil - 1:24th scale - Australian tug

The Wattle was built in Australia 1933

I didnt start taking pictures of the initial start of building as it had not crossed my mind at the time to do a build log its the first time and I am a bit shaky as to how to go on,

so here are some of the first pictures,

after final layer of glass tissue and propeller tube and shaft fitted

sorry about the poor picture, this was quite a big jump to fitting the rudder and the sponson

another leap in time whilst the resin was curing I built other parts

wheelhouse, winch, lifeboat part of davits and l/boat cradle

latest updates are brass-work on funnel

more to come as I progress

Nice - looking forward to seeing progress on this one. If the original is in Port Phillip I'll have to go down and have a look at her sometime. Where is she berthed, Brian?

As an Aussie I'm curious as to why someone in Scotland chose to make a model of an Australian tug. Is there a personal connection, or were you just interested in this particular vessel?

Mick,

Is this going to be an R/C build?  With the glass tissue and the size, I'm thinking it is.

That'll make a nice model Iain; a great subject.

The Wattle is currently on the hard undergoing some 'refurbishment' but should be back in the water in the not too distant future.

See http://www.sorrentosteam.com.au/story.htm  for some further info on her.

cheers

Pat

If at first you do not suceed, try, and then try again!

Hi! Louie, I have family in Oz, most of my side are all gone now but wife's side are in South Australia, my great uncle Beck lived in Maroochidore have a paper clip of aunt as she broke her ankle surfin at 70 y/old and uncle who lived through 2 w/wars was hit by a car crossing the road, so guess I have a thing about Australia and would have been there but mum failed on the medical! end of story,

Hi the Wattle was re floated on 31st September 2015 and is expected to be running again mid 2016, after a substantial rebuild. It should run for the next 80 years plus on it's original steam engines as a day tourist boat around Port Philip Bay.

I have made a scratch build model of the Wattle that I finished mid 2015, I have both an electric motor drive and I also run it with a drop in live steam plant.

The build took me over 12 months of continuous work. She is currently berthed near the Bolty Bridge in the Yarra River in Melbourne and has a woeking bee of around 20 enthusiasts working on it that meet every Saturday.
