J- I'm Gonna need allot of rope.

JSG- after your post I did a Google image search and saw so many versions. At least I learned that they are vertical planks and not horizontal. I will paint mine black it would seems to go along with the hawse holes.

At least I learned that they are vertical planks and not horizontal

Now you've got me confused. The bill board is made of horizontal planks to create a sweeping curved vertical protective wooden plate to protect against the anchor.

What vertical planks are you referring to?

I saw it on another model when I did an image seach. It was an exelent scratch build of the snake. Didn't pay attention to who did it but it was by far the best/most detailed one I've seen. Of coUrse I can't find it now I'll keep looking and post the link.

JSG, I know I've seen all of those names before. I found that pic at work so ill track it down when I get back next week.

Due to the bump I hit with my planking I decided to start on my gun ports, molding and billboard.

For my gunport hinges in using paper soaked in CA to stiffen it. Then made some rings out of brass wire. Will blacken them and use PVA glue for the bolts on the hinges. Still experimenting on the hinge. Need a small half circle. May cut some treenails in half and paint black.

Here is my scrapers for my molding :

post-1401-0-24917200-1388082507_thumb.jpg

I made them out of #18 xacto blades and use them in the blade holder. So far the harder the wood the cleaner the molding. Till next time

Oh, I like your idea using the Xacto blades for scrapers which allows you the use of a handle! (I had been using a razor blade) Cutting the metal scraper was easy; cutting the metal scraper to the exact profile and proper width I found difficult. Your moldings came out looking real good.

I'm not clear how you are making the hinges out of rings so I guess I will have to be patient and just wait to see what you do next.

I also like those scrapers.

And I'll be very interested to see how your hinges work out.  In my view, the hinges supplied by the kit are too big and thick, and they end up looking clunky.  There are eyebolts that go on the inside bottoms of each lid -- is that where you're going to use the wire?

Martin and JSG, the rings are for the rope to pull the port open. I'm trying to see how I could simulate a hinge. I thought a treenail size bit of material across the port strap would look like a hinge ? We will see.

Using my old exacto blades as scrapers is my way of being earth friendly since my truck gets 11 miles to the gallon and I drink bottled water constantly :-)

Right, Eric, I got it now.  And, in fact, I noticed last night when looking at my own Ratt, that I'd put in the eyebolt for the pull-rope as well.  For one such rope, I think it's the aft-most, I had to drill a hole to run it through the channel before passing into the bulwarks.  That's how it seemed to look on the plans.

Overall, I think the gunports are one detail that make a modeller grit his teeth -- they have lots of little detail (and you can always add more), and they come off very easily.

Looking forward to more.

Scott, dremel makes a thin metal cutting disk. I used it to gently eat away the profile.

So some progress :

post-1401-0-24544600-1389579989_thumb.jpg

I made and attached the billboards. This was actually easy. I made a photocopy of the plans and used it as a template for the curve. Edge glued boxwood vernier cut to shape. The edge glued panel in the picture is actually boxwood planking made into a panel that will be used for the gun port doors. It's the same idea so I threw it in the picture. The edge glued panel conforms to the hull seamlessly but is a little fragle until it's attached.

post-1401-0-06833800-1389580368_thumb.jpgpost-1401-0-83020200-1389580456_thumb.jpg

So this was a bit nerve wracking. I cut holes to fit the sheaves. The sheave is made from cherry using a round file and drill. I think the holes are a little big ? Don't be afraid to sound off if they look out of place

post-1401-0-73731800-1389580822_thumb.jpg

And last but not least the gun port doors. Just a handful are done but the ought id post em to get some feedback. The eyebolt where the opening rope is attached is omitted for now so I don't destroy them handealing the model.

Still pondering the decking issue. I leaning towards JPetts rope coil idea.

Those billboards look really good -- the contrast between the black & yellow helps to show off the neatness of the curved lines that you nailed just about perfectly.

I'm not sure if your sheave there is too big or not.  I do like the double hole though.  I'm even halfway thinking of going back and replacing my single-hole versions, since these doubles look far more realistic.

So are you going to leave the gun port lids down or up?  They look tidy in their place.  And if they're going to be in the up position, will they also be red on the insides?

That paint scheme makes for a striking build.

Well done!

Finished planking the main deck ! Sanding this is interesting. The cross dams on the foredeck make it tough to get at the deck. Not sure where I'm going to work next. I obtained a copy of hunt's particum for the rattlesnake. It's based off off the malmoli model, and seems their is a couple differences. Also obtained some Swiss pear. This wood is great. I have been using my Byrnes saw to make some new molding out of the pear. I also ordered some two pArt epoxie putty to help make the transome fashion piece. I'll report back on how that goes. post-1401-0-92901600-1421036501_thumb.jpgpost-1401-0-39949600-1421036480_thumb.jpg

Thanks Scott! It helps to have an experienced modeler such as yourself give complements.

I've started building the cabin bulkhead. My plan is to build it out of vernier thickness woods. I'm trying to copy the plans 1:1. It's extremely slowi going the wood (Swiss pear, cherry and walnut) is very small. My clumsy hands have a very hard time not breaking these tiny bits. Here is some pics:

post-1401-0-84282000-1421214390_thumb.jpgpost-1401-0-20974900-1421214402_thumb.jpg

I've obviously got aways to go. I've been milling some pear to make the moldings throught the ship. If you don't have a Byrnes saw yet, get one, worth every penny!

I found this part fun to do and really tried to put in a lot of detail. It turns out a lot of that detail (window "glass," fancy paneling, etc) get lost once all the decks are finished and furnished. If I were to do it again, yeah I'd do it again because that's me. What I'm trying to say is don't get hung up on stuff that won't get seen if you have problems with it. I my case it was the window "glass" frames. The "glass" really wasn't needed because nobody could see it which would have made the window framing much easier. (See my log for the details).

Yeah, that bulk head is tricky. When building, keep in mind the false deck that you will have to put in. Perhaps I got lucky but the little section of deck that goes from the stairs up the side of the ship to the poop deck, it fit right over the top of the doors that are there on the sides. Or perhaps I didn't get so lucky but it was hard to see the results.  I'm not so sure I got lucky myself.  So just be aware of the tight fitting area there.
