  1. Wheelhouse looks great I really like the color of the wood. Did you have to use your big match for decking strips? Looking great Valeriy
  2. I thought I would show my method of making some handwheels for my project. I start by making some rings of 28 ga brass wire. OD of ring is the size needed for the handwheel I need. I had some P.E. handwheels from a watertight door set. I than drill a center hole for the wheel shaft. The rings and P.E. hw were tinned on one side. I used a jig to center both parts tinned sides facing each other. They were than soldered together in the jig. Once removed from jig they were trimmed up and cleaned up.Only needed a few of difference sizes. Ah the joys of sratchbuilding Steve
  3. Eric, West Coast steamschooners used painted canvas as a deck covering. Many ships did I believe. Tar paper covered decks I would think would be a mess on hot days as the tar melts and is tracked all over the place. Course it may have been a different type of tar paper than we use today. Just my 2 cents worth. Steve
  4. Wow, It's been a few months since I have posted anything. Well now that winter is here I can spend some time in the shipyard. Have spent some time making rigging for the boom. With no measurement drawings it is difficult to determine sizes. Using a number of photos isn't as helpful as one might think. But that is the nature of scatch building. So here are a few photos of what I have been doing. I like to leave pivot pins long so I have a way of removing them until final assembly.
  5. Dave, Thank you for identifying them as planking clamps. Was not too sure on how they worked. Steve
  6. Well I went back to the little book store this weekend as I knew they had gotten in some more maritime related books. This is what I bought home at 2 dollars each My motorboat series collection is growing
  7. Couple days ago I bought a small box with ship modeling wood and a few hulls. In the bottom of the box was a mixture of parts and tools. Well I didn't think 5 bucks was a bad deal. Included were some clamp like items. I do not know if they are for model building or not. I have never seen this type before. Any idea's ?
  8. Bob my Zipper build came from one of the Ideal Series books. I also will buy them when I find them.
  9. I recently went to a local book sale and picked up these 10 books for 2 dollars each. Just to add to my collection, admiral approved of course.
  10. Richard,My build log for the John Cudahy shows my small boats that I built using the wood plug method. plank were edge glued. if enterested on page 4, 5, starting at post #116-#125 in scratch building logs. Steve
  11. Gary, The derrick winch is 1 inch wide and 1&5/8's from gypsie drum to gypsie drum. It's a little over 1 inch tall. Levers, drums, gears are turned ( several times on some items). Styrene, brass, copper and aluminum are being used to make parts. Considering I did not have a lines drawing and I had a couple of limited photos. It has been a real bugger but I think I have the rest figured out. I did not realize you had posted a reply so I am catching up. Thanks everyone for stopping by to take a look.
  12. Well it's about time I posted something to show the shipyard is still open. I have not had alot of time to spend working on my project. The following pictures are of the derrick winch that I have been working on. It is not finished yet as you can see in the second picture. All I have for a design is two very poor line drawings and three photos that only show some of the winch. still have much to do
  13. Look'n real good, the number of fasteners gives it that special look.
  14. N.N., floating steam winch of the hydraulic engineering inspection, Emden: 3000 kg load capacity: cuts 1:10. Lithograph colored on the cardboard, 53.7 x 75.5 cm (including scan edges) N.N. : Schwimmende Dampfwinde der Wasserbauinspektion, Emden Stock Photo - Alamy If you go to the Alamy site and search N.N. floating steam winch it should bring up the pg I posted. Steve
  15. I do not know if this is helpful or not. low rez makes it hard see it clearly. It looks alot like the one you posted picture of. Site sells personal use for 19.99
  16. Not alot to show for the last month. I have done some work on the flying bridge. Most of my shipyard time has been spent working on the derrick winch and boom. They are still in many small parts so no pictures yet. Hope everyone had a great Holiday.
  17. Thanks everyone for the likes and comments. Motor whale boat started out as a shapeways printed boat but was a early version. It had a hinged rudder on the stern. The whale boat I needed was a later version where the stern has been filled out to a more rounded shape and had a canopy. I built the canopy with glue soaked paper on a canopy shaped plug
  18. Ok, a little update on my project. I am getting closer to being able to fasten cabin to the deck. A few hoses to drape, couple of fittings to add. Tring to get as much done on cabin while not on model.
  19. I do not know if this was bought up or not on this site. So I will post this just in case it is useful for others. I recently bought acrylic rod for making running lights, mast lights and who knows what else. My purchase was for 1/4" rod in red, green, and clear I than added amber, yellow, and solid black. With 1/4" rod you get 6 pieces that are 36" long for $11.50. They have rod up to 1" and you get fewer 36" pieces, cost goes up a little. I bought them from Delvies Plastics on esty site. I now have several lifetimes of material for making running/mast lights.
