  1. Hello everyone, I am a new member. I have recently joined the forum and introduced myself here 👇 I am starting a new construction log for a well known ship the HMS Surprise. It took me some reflexion and thinking to settle on that ship. So one might ask how i decided to build her and not another one. I am passionate by the islands of Polynesia. After a tchat with a colleague about Polynesia, the Bounty and the mutineers' descendants I started reading books about the discovery of these islands. Among them the excellent " The discovery of Tahiti" written by Dolphin's master George Robertson. One thing led to another, i found myself dragged into Patrick O'Brian serie and voilà. The HMS Surprise seems like a perfect choice for a lego construction. It is both an historical and fictional ship allowing for a personnal creation that will fit the restrictions imposed by the famous bricks. I have been through a lot of research online to find information about the ship. So far, this page has been of great help : http://www.jotika-ltd.com/Pages/1024768/Research_Surprise_01.htm So was this log by David @Navis Factorem what a magnificient work ! What is the next step for me ? Well I am gonna start creating a virtual model of the ship using Studio 2.0 a Lego creation software. It seems to me a mandatory step so that i have a better idea of the parts needed before i order them online through various second hand shops and individuals. Do i need help ? Yes ! So far i am struggling with the ship measurements. So if anyone can give me a better understanding of these numbers : The real Surprise was built as the French L'Unite from August, 1793, to April, 1794, at Le Havre, captured by the Royal Navy on April 20, 1796, and taken into service as the Surprise. Her specifications (taken from page 225 of Rif Winfield's "British Warships in the Age of Sail. 1793-1817", Chatham Publishing, 2005) were as follows: Length: 126' 0" Keel: 108' 6 1/8" Breadth: 31; 8" Depth: 10' 1/2" Tons burthen: 578 73/94 Once I have a better idea of the ship's dimension i can compare it to the Lego hull parts and figure out the scale. This is as far as I have been so far. Vincwat
  2. Hi After years of reading the books decided to take the plunge and build the ship that features so heavily. I chose the Mamoli kit in the knowledge that it does not bear much resemblance to the real Surprise or those that appeared in the movie or books. My choice was driven partially due to the size and my little boy has insisted that I add a crew. I will make some modifications to this model so it is closer to how I imagined the Surprise to look which has been coloured by the movie and some of the other kits out there. I am very slow in building but am using this log as a motivation to keep going. Will try to post some photos later on once I figure out how to do so. Just posted the normal unboxing photos as an experiment.
  3. Hello all. This is my Build log of Artesania Latina's HMS Surprise in 1/48 This kit is big. 1334 mm long. I started this after bagging my previous Sovereign of the Seas project, which was a real disappointment for me. So far, I've put more hours in this project in a day, than what I put in the SotS in a week. Here is my start. Technical data of the kit: The instructions manual. 117 pages in seven languages, with photos (not drawings) of the actual build, and very detailed: Example of the plans in 1/1 scale relative to the kit, printed in full color and in heavy gloss paper: False keel and frames already fitted and glued: Lower false deck in place. Done after a lot of nailing, gluing and of course, cursing. False lower deck ready for planking. For this I am going to use this article by a fellow modeler member related to deck planking and different plank patterns http://modelshipworldforum.com/resources/Framing_and_Planking/Deck_PlankingIIbuttshifts.pdf
  4. Enough of the thinking, time for some doing! My son came good at Christmas with a copy of the Brian Lavery/Geoff Hunt book "The Frigate Surprise", number 165 of the limited edition of 250 which includes the signed Geoff Hunt print, marvellous. I have purchased a Scheppach Deco Flex scroll saw to cut out all those curvey bits. The book includes lots of line drawings including the all important hull profiles which I will scan and enlarge to the right scale then transfer to ply for the internal framing. I intend a double plank on bulkhead method for the hull. I have built 2 hulls this way and like that the 2 layers gives a bit more scope for modification (fixing mistakes!). Next will be creation of a list of timber needed to start. Cheers. David.
  5. Shame all was lost ... I guess I will repopulate with truncated series of photos from beginning to today. Now at 450 hrs and finishing gun deck cannons. Material to follow after I get home from work.
  6. Howdy, This is my first build and thought I would share the experience on here as I am sure there will be lots to share with others new builders and lots learn from you folks. I know the forums suggest going easy with the first build, but I inevitably regret not getting what my heart is set on with these types of projects, and will all of the online support and my own commitment to doing a good job and researching plenty, I just jumped right in with the HMS Surprise kit. These were the main reasons(for those new builders grappling with the same situation) -I wanted something in as large a scale as possible and 1:48 was appealing -I wanted something imposing, artful and sentimental to display in the home -I thought the Surprise was very visually appealing and had enough detail and accessories to be interesting, but wasn't as daunting as 100+ HMS Victory cannons for instance. -The kit had very good reviews, online support, build logs and INSTRUCTIONS:) -I wanted the kit to have a full complement of rigging and sails. So that's it. On to the build. Note: I started the build 2 months ago and took tons of pics along the way in case I decided to do a build log. I'm currently finished with the upper decking and inside planking, and starting the many upper decks accessories. I'll post pics and comments in chronological order until caught up, then it'll slow down significantly to real time progress lol. I appreciate any comments and tips...thanks.
  7. Hi, The source of this project is the “Plan of HMS Surprise, 1796 Lines and Profile, from the Royal Museums Greenwich (Publisher code J5948). The drawing was imported into a cad program, traced, and a scaled working set of drawings printed. Construction is now underway. Walter
  8. First sailing vessel and first Build log. I started my ship on December 27. and have been taking pictures that I've yet to post. I have built boats before (real and model) but have never done rigging . I'm starting with a moderate level kit before I try my first scratch built. Iv'e been getting advice from your forums since I decided to go for it. I'm looking forward to more feedback and sharing lessons learned with this community of like interested friends.
  9. Hi folks, I've decided to start a build log so I can share with folks that ask about my latest ship model. This will be HMS Surprise 100% scratch (if I can) built. It will be stained with no or very little painting. I've already made a couple of errors so I just assume that Dr. Materin has been doing some refitting after buying her out of the service. The build is single plank on bulkhead. We'll see how that goes. This is my third build after Armed Virginia Sloop and Niagara so I expect some challenges. Just bought a Byrnes table saw and thicknesser and plan to purchase a lathe soon. I spend a lot of time reviewing Dan Vadas Vulture build so many of the things I do will be copied from Dan. (Thanks Dan!) Pics to follow. Brian Like others I bought the Lavery and Hunt book on Surprise, made copies of the drawings and then enlarged them to actual size. I am using one foot = 5mm which comes out to 1/61 scale. I like working in metric and this gives me about the right size model when complete. After enlarging and making several copies I cut out the bulkheads and used them to trace onto 5ply 1/4 ply. I was struggling to figure a good deck height so I cut the bulkheads lower than the deck should be so I could add the decks later. This also gave me more flexibility to move the bulkheads to adjust for the ports. Now we'll see if I'm adding the pictures correctly.... Brian
  10. Here is a link to my Picasa web album charting my "Super-Detailed" build of HMS Surprise. I have attempted a compromise between all available sources of information on the subject. I did have a build log on the original MSW site but alas it's all gone now. Cheers, Pete. The link is no longer valid.
  11. Hello one and all, Here I go then. My attempt to build HMS Surprise. I had hoped to base this very firmly on Jack Aubrey’s vessel but I have found it difficult to tie down exactly what Patrick O’Brian had in mind. It is quite clear that O’brian contradicts himself at times and that he plays fast and loose with the time line. Others may have a better handle on this than me and I would love to hear their thoughts; in the mean time the plan is to build L’Unite/Surprise before her refit in 1798 thus giving scope to include “long guns” much loved by our Jack. The kit from Artesania Latina leaves much to be desired even to my unpracticed eye and this has been touched upon by others. Kim, krt2, pointed out, in his sadly now missing build log, the problem with mast positions and channels. I intend to address these issues where I can and, again, would be very interested in the view of others. So, HMS Surprise with the odd hint of Aubrey. In the beginning. The familiar starting point. Does anyone else use this wonderful Dremel vice? Gluing in using small engineers squares. All bulkheads in place. As I have a biggish drawing board it occurred to me that I could “test” the planking layout before fitting the false deck sections. Binding strakes and Margin planks have also been drawn in. Templates for margin planks... ......and in situ on the marked up deck. The marked up deck will contain errors due to parallax and pencil thickness so they are purely a guide. I hope they will at least keep me on track when laying the planks. A butt shift pattern had been worked out in advance.....I hope it is correct! Some below deck interest. The main hatch will be displayed open for added interest and the hatch below that will also be open do infer that work between decks is underway. A hoist may be added later. Fitting the false decks..... ....and a preview of the hatch below. Oh no! a boo boo! Bulkhead 18 has been misfitted and I failed to notice it before now. A section of false deck must be cut out and removed before the glue holding the bulkhead has been softened with IPA and the offending piece removed and replaced correctly.(Sorry, lousy photo.) In passing I must pay homage to the accumulated wisdom within these forums (fora?) that led me to the solution of PVA with IPA. All fixed and the false deck section due to be replaced. Starting the planking. A guide has been placed for laying the first plank. The central un butt shifted planks are laid. At this point I must thank those people who responded to my question regarding scraping and scrapers in the Building,Framing and Planking forum. The small amount of deck that has been laid so far looked a bit messy due to inept use of the permanent marker and smudgy transfer from my fingers. I tried a wee scrape and it works! Now I must learn to be cleaner in my work On the subject of plank edge marking it seems to look better if only one face of a pair of planks is marked. Is this the method in general?
  12. My name is Derik and I live in Cape Town, South Africa. I fell in love with model ships when I first read Tintin and the Unicorn in primary school. I even visited the flea market in Brussels to look for the Unicorn. Unfortunately there was no fourth model for sale. I started the HMS Surprise in April 2012. Good progress was made until July. I will upload the typical start Picture as a test. If it works I will post more of the progress.
