Another update for the build log. I have the waterways and lower deck pillars installed. I used walnut for the waterways and poplar for the pillars. Tomorrow, I plan to frame out the gun ports and cut some strips for the bulwark planking. At first I was thinking about using walnut for the bulwark planking; and I still may. I want to see what the poplar will look like on the bulwarks instead of the walnut. Of course I am open to any suggestions and/or opinions on the matter. The outer hull planking above the wales will be done in basswood and the deck planking will be done maple just as the lower deck.

Thanks for the tip, Mark. I will be going out to the local hobby shops to see if I can find some 28 gauge black wire. And I will pick up some construction paper or card stock if needed to build the caps. Hopefully by the end of the weekend I'll have the guns done.

The gun deck framing is completed and installed on the cross section. I plan to plank this deck with maple as well. I am undecided on if I should plank it out to the point in the picture on each side or just far enough for the guns to sit on it. I still have to decide what to use for planking above the wales inside and out. I have poplar, maple and basswood. Guess I'll go with what looks best. I have used the poplar on the lower hull and the maple on the decks. And I am thinking about using walnut for the inner hull around the gun ports and planking. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I have also started to build the guns, I purchased them fro dlumberyard.com. So far I have 1 of 4 built with the 2nd one started. My question is what should I get to finish them off with. I know that the eye bolts can be made out of black wire and I have rope and blocks, but I am unsure as to what to use to make the pieces that hold the gun to the carriage (or should I even bother with that detail). Anyways, here are some pictures for your viewing pleasure:

Looking awesome, Scott! You should be proud of your work. That is a fine model. I can only hope that my Rattlesnake will turn out that well once I build it.

I have finished assembling the gun deck. All that is needed now is to finish sand it and install the deck planking once the deck is installed on the model. The first picture is of the deck set into the Cross Section to see how it fit, looking closely at it, I see that I need to do some sanding to make it all fit perfectly. I have also started making the hanging knees for the gun deck. I printed out the patterns and glued them to the wood. them I rough cut them out on the scroll saw and finished it off for the final shape with a sanding block and 60 grit paper. 5 hanging knees done and 5 to go.

I got some good work done on the gun deck framing. I am hoping that it turns out just as good if not better than the lower deck. Only time will tell. if it doesn't then I guess I'll just have to redo it. I am hoping to have the gun deck done by the end of this week.

I have finished sanding all of the tree nails and planks smooth on the outer hull and the lower deck. I then finished it off with some satin wipe on poly. I think she is starting to look good, at least I like it. Hope you all like it too. I have also started cutting out all of the little pieces needed for framing of the gun. I'll start to assemble the gun tomorrow.

It has been a while since I have been able to work on the Triton cross section, but I finally got some time to spend on it. I have planked the lower deck and tree nailed it. I also started to tree nail the outer hull, that is about 3/4 of the way done. Next I will sand it all smooth before building and installing the gun deck.

Thanks for all the likes and comments. I have decided to partially plank the lower deck and will do the same with the gun deck. I also plan to leave a small section of the frames exposed on the outside hull. I am using maple for the decking and walnut for the wales and poplar for the lower hull. At the moment, the wales and most of the lower deck planking is complete. Once I get the lower hull planked, I will post more pics before sanding and treenailing. Kenny

The frame for the lower deck is completed and currently dry fitted into the hull to dry. I am going to give it some extra time to dry, want to make sure that it is good a dry before sanding to make sure all is flush for planking. I also need to make and install the hanging knees as well. Speaking of planking, I am undecided on if I should plank the whole deck or half of the deck. I am going to use maple for the planks and I still need to cut those out of the piece of maple that I have. So I guess I have a little time to figure that out. Anyways, here are the pictures as she sits now, with the frame dry fitted into the hull.

Got the frame work started for the lower deck. I still need to make and install the ledges and knees. Right now I have it fitted to the hull, but will glue it in once the frame is complete. The deck planking will be done with some nice maple that I have and then I think I will move on to planking the outside hull up to the wales.

I finished treenailing all of the planks up to the lower deck clamps with bamboo treenails. A single coat of finish has also been applied to the planks. I really like how the poplar turned out for the planks. Hopefully I'll find some time to start on the lower deck frame tomorrow. Anyways, here are a couple of pics for your viewing pleasure.

I'm sure more will pop up. Once I finish my Triton cross section and Fair American brig, I will start on my MS Rattlesnake kit.

I got the treenailing completed on the starboard side and have started drilling the holes on the port side. Once the port side is done, I will sand all the planks smooth and apply some wipe on poly. Then it will be on to building the lower deck. I am using bamboo for the treenails, and I guess they will stand out a lot better once the finish is applied.

Ed, if you do decide to write a book for this ship, I will be in line to purchase it. I just picked up your Naiad books and can't wait to get those delivered. I am amazed at the detail on this build, you truly are inspiration to all! Looking forward to more updates. Kenny

Pete, I know all too well about that evil 4 letter word "Work". It gets in my way at times too, but you are doing a great job and rushing it will only lead to problems. I know all too well about that.

I have finished planking the inside of the hull up to the lower deck clamps with poplar and am in the process of treenailing all the planks to the frames. I also started the planking on the outside hull, but will wait until the inside is finished before finishing the outside. I am using bamboo for the treenails.

Figured it was time for an update; I got all the frames faired and have started planking the inside and outside hull. It is being done with some poplar I had laying around. I will post pics when the planking is completed up to the lower deck and wales

Thanks, Pete. The sanding is something that I am not looking forward to, but it must be done. At least I have my Fair American scratch build to go to when I get tired of sanding.

Well, stayed up longer than I should have, but I got all the frames raised with wood spacers in between the frames and the keelson attached. Tomorrow afternoon I should be able to start the fairing process of the frames. I am glad to finally see this model come together.

Thanks, Pete. I am putting wood spacers in as each frame is raised. Just seems easier that way. I decided to make this building board because I figured it would come in handy when I decide to build the full model of the Triton and I plan on building the H.M.S. Naiad following EdT's books as well.
