Bindy reacted to Richard Griffith in Maximum length of a deck plank
Hi Bindy, lengths were determined by supplies. Gun decks were oak, other decks of fir or pine.
According to Gerald Delacroix (Le Gros-Ventre 1770), the lengths were about 37 or 38' long. I checked Jean Boudriot's books and he seems to show similar lengths, (I have La Jacinthe 1825 and The 74 Gun Ship 1770.)
I then checked Dr. McArdle's book HMS Sussex 1693 and his lengths agree with the above, even though Sussex is English and 100 years older, it does give an indication of what the shipwrights used.
Mark suggests 60' but suspects that may be too long; I think so too. If the shipwrights had some 60 footers, they would have used them but generally, if you keep to a max lenght of about 34 to 36 feet, your build will look right.
Keep building and above all, have fun ~! Duff

Bindy,
I think it's your call.... La Belle Poule (1765) shows 25 to 60 feet per plank, though I think the 60 might be a bit long. On the other hand, Le Venus (1782) only shows the complete strake with no length on the planks.
I would hope that some like Gaetan or one of our more versed French ship builders can help as I'm a novice on these ships...

Not sure about that one Jesse. I know there's a thread about glues, but I don't know if any of it covers your question specifically.

Hi friends,
many thanks for the comments and Likes.
Unfortunately, a picture with three model segments of the BHR is not possible together.
Every model segment is for itself in a seperate glass cabinet / protective bonnet and
stand on different places.
Here, however, some pictures of my private ship model -museum.

So today's lesson is that I should get very drunk the night before working on sails?
And now I know how the "Flying Dutchman" got her name! I am learning something new every day!!
But super seriously, I am truly amazed at your work and scratch building/manufacturing these parts

But seriously, these look great!

What a great build log so far!
Sorry I can't help you with your question about how they should be stowed, but I can console you in not getting so much done over the weekend by reminding you it would have been VERY un-Australian not to drink the beer on Australia Day Weekend

Hahahahahaha
I think you lost your argument (and wasted $50) about appearing not very manly by revealing you even know what Hello Kitty stickers are!
It's ok, I won't give you up to your Admiral though hahaha

Gun ports and guns.
The gun ports have all been cut and to make sure that the guns are a reasonable fit all the gun carriages have been assembled and fitted to ports. When fitted the forecastle and quarterdeck guns were sitting too high in the ports. A dimension check showed that the bulwarks were not high enough so they have been raised and the gun carriages reduced in height to get a better fit. The final gun barrel angles still need a bit of adjustment but they are getting close.
A dry fit of all the bits assembled to date gives a good progress pic.
The capstan is the only major part missing from the upper deck and all the forecastle and quarterdeck fitting are next to be made.
I think that I am close to being able to start the top planking on the hull. Should be fun.
Cheers,
David.

This past week, Our Hero be working his way thru the list he didst draw-up of the detail items to be a-going into his Launch.
“There be precious little to be a-telling ye about,” CaptainSteve did begineth. “This past seven-day, I be mocking up some buckets and piggins.”
Indeedeth, the info provided by Buck as a reference was most goodly and of great help. However, CaptainSteve’s buckets be bearin’ only a passing similarity to Googled images.
“I … err … that is, I was a-tryin’ to make ‘em appear battered and beaten,” he stammered. “Yea !! Verily, that be it. I was a-tryin' to be making 'em look weathered !!”
Arrr. Indeedeth, CaptainSteve.
The bases haveth been sliced from a spare piece of 10mm dowel. The edges o’ each Our Hero didst file to maketh the angle for the sides.
“I didst cutteth a great number of slats, and thence taper and spileth each …” he continued.
The slats were laideth out upon masking tape …
… and thence folded into a circle, using the end of a pen to help formeth the shape.
(A white colouration in the bottom o' me buckets doth giveth away me secret: a generous drop of PVA after the circular base hath been fitted doth hold all in place.)
“Thinly sliced strips o’ masking tape (painted black), and rope handles I didst addeth to me buckets,” Our Hero didst explaineth.
And, finally, The List as it currently stands …

And semi-final look... ok, sheaves have to be a bit darker, and that is not final color for inside bulwarks, I was just curious ...
When I tried to light up cigarette with super-glue instead lighter, and after that washed brush in a tea, I know it is enough for today
And Hothead starts fooling around ... which mean ... danger for models ...

Just wow CaptainSteve!
The quality of your work and final results are just amazing! If you applied the same efforts to your English we would lose (very sadly) CaptainSteve and be replaced by Master Modeller William Shakespeare! Actually he spoke pretty strangely too haha.
But seriously, your Launch is just amazing and each time I look at your log I want to start one myself, and read the books about the Launch's own voyage.
Bindy
P.S. Good luck with the recovery from your work injury!! It sounds very painful

Hello Captain71 and a big welcome from me too!
Thank you for starting a build log. I am building the same kit myself and will follow along with your every step! (And maybe steal a few ideas, tips and tricks too haha) There are only a few HMS Surprise builders here at the moment but they are all very friendly, and of course the whole community is here to help.
Welcome again and good luck!

Hello Mike!
Wow, what a quick build and a great result! I agree with Cap'n and say that I hope you are proud of how she came out as your "Louise" looks fantastic. Your woodwork and planking really does look so good even though you questioned it
I can't wait to see your next project. Congrats again on another great build!

Bindy reacted to Navis Factorem in HMS Surprise by captain71 - Mamoli - Scale 1:75 - British Frigate
Hi Captain71,
Welcome to the Surprise build group.
I started my Surprise about a year ago. Initially I thought I would go for a kit build and the Mamoli version was one option, at 1:75 the finished product is a manageable size. Other options at 1:48 or so would have ended up pretty large.
In the end I decided to scratch build using the Lavery & Hunt book as the basis as it includes a version of the original plans.
The hull is going well and I am working on the fittings for the upper deck. (This is actually below the quarterdeck and forecastle). Working out how to fully detail this upper deck was a bit of a challenge as all the detail has to be in place before I install the top deck sections and I didn't want to end up doing dusty work with all the guns etc. in place. So I have got removable deck sections that I can complete remotely. So far so good.
Cheers.

Excuse me, but would you mind cancelling your house move and continue building your Bounty Launch?
I think it is just a little selfish of you considering I was enjoying reading your log so much but I guess I can be patient if you think your whole life is more important than entertaining me ...
(All the best with your move!)
