  1. Tony, It's an IPMS show in Camberley (40 mins outside of London). I think it's more display models and trade, but I'm going with a guy from work and he says there is a lot minture Engineering projects on display too... Here's a link to the website: http://www.ipms-farnborough.co.uk/index.php?id=modelfest Ken, Thanks, she's still a bit upset - I've lost dogs in the past so I can appreciate how she (and her family are feeling), but with a bit of support and a lot of loving from Lily the Cocker Spaniel, she will hopefully work through it. Also, thanks for the kind words about the diorama. It's taken a fair bit of thought and planning this time around. I'm hoping whilst I'm at the model show on Saturday I can find a company that will supply or at least point me in the right direction for the glass case. Cheers, Jonny
  2. Hello Chaps, The Admiral lost her childhood friend, Tiny the Jack Russell this weekend, due to infected ovaries and a heart palpitation, so the mood in the house has been a bit low. To counteract the tears from her I persuaded her to do some of her Cross stitch, and I managed to sit down with her and finish off the last window pains required for the back board (whilst periodically making cups of tea and giving big hugs). I'm heading off to model engineering show this weekend, so I will hopefully be able to get the last few bits I need (scenic back drop)to finish of the back ground display. Anyway, here are some photo's of the nearly finished article.... Sherbourne alongside the Ordinance Quay. Close up showing all hands and equipment waiting for loading. Another close up showing all waiting for loading. The Ordinance lift showing damaged 4 Pounder being lifted away for repair. Sailmaker makes repairs to the working jib. All other headsails remain below. Marines at ease before embarkation. The fore'noon tide floods in. As the tide floods in the Bosun checks the shores before Sherbourne floats with the tide. I've noticed I have not rigged the gaff peak downhaul on the gaff boom, I will do this tonight and hopefully by the weekend, I will have the model nearly at a close. Cheers Jonny
  3. Cheers E, The Admiral and I have had a chat and we're sorted, and the pup will not be going, I think the stress of her job, lack of sleep and boisterous puppy are proving to be a bit tough for her. Lily had lots of love when I popped home at lunch, and she had a very special tickle under the chin, and pat on the head from you! I'll see what I can get sorted over the weekend, but you're right, Sherbourne can wait a few weeks to get sorted of needs be. Cheers bud, Jonny
  4. Hi Chaps, This week hasn't been the easiest of weeks to get on with Sherbourne. With the puppy becoming more boisterous, and being a little unwell, it has put a huge strain on the two of us due to the lack of sleep, and the phrase "it's me or the dog" has been thrown around by the Admiral. I know it's due to the lack of sleep and nothing else, but it's getting very disheartening. I had dreamt of a back up plan this morning that involved robbing a bank, changing my name, stealing a boat and slowly but surely making my way the Caribbean with the dog! Things will sort themselves out in due course, but I am well and truly tired. I can only imagine this is what parenthood is like.... I'll hopefully get the last windows on the back scene in place tonight and post up some photo's tonight. Cheers Jonny
  5. Hi Chaps, I've got the backboard and a roof line on the building for the display, but I'm still waiting on the railway scenic for the sky. I need to finish off 3 of the windows (paint on lead lines to clear acrylic and fit to the back of building), and then I can take some photo's. I'll hopefully do this tonight, so I can get some photo's on here tomorrow. Cheers, Jonny
  6. Hi Everyone, I will hopefully be starting the Longboat next Friday. Final odds and sods on Sherbourne are not far off from being finished. The backboard and display are almost finished, and I'm on the hunt for glass for the display case. I will post the usual out of box photos when I start the build. Cheers, Jonny
  7. Hi chaps, I had a brain wave on Friday, and came to the realisation that the model railroad back scene would be firstly in the wrong scale, and secondly would be difficult to find a suitable back drop, so I've built up the dock side facade of an ordinance building with a large door, a few windows cut out and a gantry for lifting guns in and out of the building. I used a light grey and brown base coat, topped rust, oil and moss green acrylic washes to add a natural weathered red brick colour to it. I've added the incoming tide to the scene as well. I'll head out to the big hobbycraft store today to buy a back board and hopefully a railroad scenic sky. I'll grab some photos when I have got to a stage where I can stop. Cheers, Jonny
  8. Ken & Brian, Thanks for the kind words. The diorama still needs a backdrop and the glass case, but I'll eventually get there. I'm going with a colleague to a local model show mid September to have to look around, and the bill says there will be everything from model ships, railways to WW2 dioramas. There will be a few suppliers there, so I hope I will be able to find a decent backdrop for the display. Cheers, Jonny
  9. Hi Chaps, Photo update time... Sherbourne and her display board is 95% complete, just a few more odds and sods to sort out, but we're pretty much there. I'm going to use all the offcuts of rigging line to make rope coils for the belaying pins and have a few scattered about on deck. These are just cosmetics that will need doing before building the MK02 display case! As for why I've been a bit quiet on the forum recently, this is the reason why... :D I will keep you all posted on the final stretches of Sherbourne and few final bits that need doing, but I will hopefully be able to include a part on building the display case. Cheers for now, Jonny
  10. I certainly did save myself £300! I doubt the Admiral would have been too pleased if I had bought home another model, I've already been told I have too many! I've not coppered a hull yet, but I imagine using the copper tape is fairly straight forward. Hope all goes well. Cheers Jonny
  11. Ken, My laptop was one of the first Vista generations available in stores, and being an apprentice at the time, I went for cheapest/best spec I could afford! Low and behold after 6 months, it was pretty much obsolete. The Admirals laptop isn't much better, so I'll buy us a communal laptop on payday and that will be us sorted (hopefully). On another note - I popped home for lunch to let Lily out for a wee and found absolutely no damage to the flat, furniture, or herself, and after 5 hours on her own, only 1 patch of pee on a puppy training pad... Need I say I am a very happy daddy right now! And yes she got lots of love from the moment I stepped in the door, until the moment I left her! Cheers, Jonny
  12. Hamilton, "There is also a particular oddity about this kit. The instructions state that the second planking should only go as far down the hull as the waterline, after which the second planking is replaced by small wooden pieces simulating copper plates. To my way of thinking this seems like a very difficult way to approach the planking of the hull, and if anyone who has built this kit can give me guidance here I'd appreciate it! I'm tempted to just apply the second planking to the entire hull. There's not enough material supplied in the kit to accomplish this, but given that the hull is "coppered" and painted it won't make much matter what material I use for the lower part...." I went in to my local hobby shop and spoke with the owner about a half built Constitution Hull (Possibly a Panart kit from the 1980's) and it had been "Coppered" with wooden strips cut to 12mm in length. The shop keeper told me it was the highest quality kit, and had been built to high standard before the previous owner passed away. He wanted £300 (which is more than the price of the new kit) for the model without the remainder of the kit. My thought process in the shop was very similar to yours (quoted text), but my real concern was the fact the half of the Starboard side of the hull had been "coppered" with these strips (which looked terrible), and I had no idea how long, or what they had been glued on with, so I decided to leave the model with him... Cheers, Jonny
  13. Ladies and Gentlemen, My laptop started to smell like burning last night as I tried to upload the photo's of Sherbourne, so I decided to email them to work and post them from here. It looks like I'll be buying a new laptop on payday.... all this after 2 complete restorations of software, a strip down and rebuild! Oh well, an 8 year old laptop isn't worth much these days, so it will more than likely be binned on payday. I will post the photo's later on today. Cheers, Jonny
  14. Hi Chaps, All quiet on the Western Front for the Longboat still, but I have a few bits and bobs to do on Sherboune so whilst I'm at it (and hopefully the puppy is asleep) I can break out the false keel and knock up a build frame for the model to ensure the frame are straight and true. Cheers, Jonny
  15. Janet, Thanks you for the kind words. I found the kit cannons were not up to spec, and the Britannia White Metal castings were of very poor quality, so I emailed Caldercraft and asked for a replacement set. They sent all the guns in brass within 3 working days and said they were free of charge. It would be worth a try if you are un happy with the stock they have supplied with the kit. All in all - excellent service. My laptop decided it was too old and decrepit to post the photo's yesterday, and we had some unexpected but pleasant visitors turn up yesterday afternoon to meet our new puppy, so my efforts were scuppered from that point onwards. I will hopefully be able to try again tonight, but if all else fails, I will ping them across to my work email address and put them up from there. Cheers, Jonny
  16. Hello Chaps, Sorry it's been a few weeks without an update on Sherbourne, but it's been manic with the puppy. I'm in the process of uploading some photo's to my laptop for you all to see the finished article. My laptop is incredibly slow, so I'll have to take my time doing this, so there may be a few posts of the photo's to ease the workload on my tired out laptop. Cheers for now, Jonny
  17. Ken, Brian, BobF, and Erik, Thanks for the likes and tagging along. Hopefully the build will kick off around the 18th September, by that time Lily the puppy will be used to life in our household, so I should feel confident starting the build! Cheers Jonny
  18. Hi Chaps, I'll be posting some photos of the kit online either tonight or tomorrow, but I've still got my work cut out with Lily as she is proving to be a handful at times! Lucy ordered my Christmas present online end of last week, and that arrived this morning too, so I now have the 21' Pinnace to build after this (I asked for that, and Model Expo had it going cheap on eBay)! Right back to the puppy. Cheers Jonny
  19. Hello, For those of you you who don't know me, I'm Jonny from Farnborough in England, I'm 23 years old, and I live with my partner Lucy, who loves to cross stitch, and our 9 week old Cocker Spaniel puppy called Lily. Lucy bought me this kit for my birthday in July, and I promised her due to the lack of space that I'd wait until I finished Sherbourne before starting the Longboat. I've been reading through the build logs for the 18th Century Longboats on MSW for a few weeks, and I can see this could be an interesting build, but small and compact, which is ideal for fitting around the new puppy we've taken on. This will be my 5th build log on MSW, with kit builds of HMS President, HM Mortar Vessel Convulsion, HM Cutter Sherbourne, and a scratch build of a 19' day sailor, but this will be my first venture in to Plank on Frame construction. I have spoken with Chuck Passaro and have a list of parts that I will replace on the model, such as the rigging lines, the blocks and the deadeyes. The background for the model is described in Chucks build log available here on MSW, but in brief this model is a representation of a typical Longboat from 1750 to 1760, and based on a model at the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich in London. Apart from the addition of new rigging items, I will be building this pretty much out of the box. Now, I feel I should tell you all that this build will be slow to start off with due to the fact we have a 9 week old puppy, so I'll be starting in a few weeks time, when the dog is older and has had her full course of injections to allow her to go walkies in the big wide world (which will help tire her out)! I will hopefully be able to pull out the kit today and start mulling over the parts and instructions to get a better idea of the build and what I will need to buy before starting the build. Thanks for stopping by, and I hope you enjoy my build log. Cheers, Jonny
  20. Well now Gents, With nearly 48 hours in to adoptive parenthood of a puppy, Lily has managed to learn to pee and poop outside (mostly) and she seems to have made herself at home fairly well! As for night time, she's still hasn't got used to being on her own! She's crying lots, so I've spent most of my nights sleeping on the laminate floor next to her crate! Not great for my back, but she settles for a bit and then I can return to the sofa for a bit! She's a fantastic little pup, no quibbles at nothing, eats and farts like a trooper (imagine the campfire scene in Blazing Saddles and you get the picture)! She has a fantastic nature and loves to nibble on things, including fingers and toes! She knows the pecking order also, to Lucy's dismay she has proven to be my dog! She loves play time with me! I'm having trouble uploading photos at present, but I will do so later. As for Sherbourne, well.... All the ratlines are finished, glue dried and just require a touch of 'tar' on the last five as I ran out of the black thread. I've tied her to the harbour wall with a bow and stern lines and springs. All I need to do now is build a the glass case for her and she's done! Sorry for the lack of posts recently, we've both been off our feet with the little one! Luckily the little turd is asleep at the moment, so we have a few moments of peace! Cheers for now, Jonny
  21. Hi Guys, A bit of a short sharp update as I don't have much time today! The Novus polish arrived on Monday, and worked really well on the smaller scratches. I decided to use the dremel on the lowest speed and the supplied buffing pad, but that still ran too fast and melted the Perspex as soon as it touched the surface! So I'll be making a new display case soon as the Perspex is well and truly glued in tight! As for the ratlines - Starboard side is complete and trimmed off, but I'm about a third of the way up on the Port side! It's puppy day on Friday, so I'll be in full puppy mode from then, so I have to blitz the Ratlines tonight whilst the Admiral watches Great British Bake Off, luckily it's a fairly quiet activity (apart from the occasional "Fudge this dull" and "Fudge I'm not even half way there yet")! Cheers Jonny
  22. Hi Chaps, Not much of an update on Sherbourne to speak of, but Ken I thought you would to know that I've ordered the Novus polish you told me about. It should be with me in a weeks time, just in time for me to polish the crap of the Perspex before Lily arrives! As for the ratlines... no progress since my last update as I've been incredibly busy at work, and Lucy has had a bad week so it's been all hands on deck keeping the house tidy and running whilst she moping about! I have a physio session later on today, and after that it will be back on to the ratlines with the goal to finish the first set this weekend. Cheers Jonny
  23. Afternoon Chaps, Two parts to today's update, an update on Sherbourne, and an update on Lily (I have a feeling that the dog is more popular on here than Sherbourne)! Ratlines have been started. Currently working on the Starboard side, and tying them at 10mm centres. My methodology for this is similar to the ratlines on Convulsion, but the difference will be that I will tie a second lot in between the 10mm gaps to reduce the gaps to 5mm at 1:64, or 320mm at 1:1! Sorry for the dark photo's, the poor morning light doesn't help much! On my next build, I will try using the method I've seen on YouTube where the ratlines are stitched through the Shroads and ties off at each end. I'm running out of thread now, so I won't be taking the approach now, although I'd like to. Pupdate..... Lily is now 7 weeks old, and is completely mad! She was so excited to see us, and really enjoyed chewing on my fingers and Lucy's hair! I'm sure this will be a great source of entertainment for many weeks to come! Cheers Jonny
  24. Ken, I've had pups all my life, I love them! A dog is the whole-hearted definition of loyalty and love! Why wouldn't they love me when I give them belly rubs and scratches behind the ear?! I'll post a photo of her later on! As for Sherbourne, I've got the first 7 ratlines on last night, and once I'm out of work tonight I'll be back on it! Cheers Jonny
  25. Hi Chaps, Puppy proofing the house has taken priority of Ship building this weekend, but saying that, once I have cleared my tools away for the puppy, I'll be on to the ratlines tonight. We're seeing the puppy this afternoon and then after that it will be all go on the ratlines! Cheers Jonny
