steamschooner reacted to captainbob in USCG Pequot (WARC-58) by captainbob - FINISHED - 1:96
Your right Lawrence, I’m lax in my entries. I’m envious of those modelers who seem to have the camera in their hands at all times. When I’m building I don’t even think about pictures until afterwards then it’s like, ‘I should have taken pictures’. But then of course it’s too late. Anyway I’ve been making some of the parts for the foredeck. It will be crowded by the time I’m through. The part are only set in place but here is where I am now.

steamschooner reacted to mtaylor in Licorne 1755 by mtaylor - 3/16" scale - French Frigate - from Hahn plans - Version 2.0 - TERMINATED
I've been diligently working while continuing to dig for information. I've looked at what seems to be a zillion plans, paintings, sketches, etc. online of French frigates... this darned ship's galleries don't match any of them. There's a couple of other odd things I noticed but since the NMM plans have them, I have to assume that the guys in the yard taking the lines, etc. knew what they were doing and drew what they saw in front of them.. My eyes are killing me from staring at the computer and the NMM plans... Aspirin helps.
I've reworked the roof to match the lines (and this time allowed for tolerances and my own stupidty) and then stained it black. I momentarily thought about using ebony but 1) didn't have the proper size stock and 2) didn't want to deal with the mess. I've reworked the rail/decorations. These appear to be more decorative than an actual railing so I'm cutting the pieces as individuals and will fit them as I go.
In the pics, one set of decorations has been cut and etched on 1/32" (<1mm) Euro Boxwood. The other still needs cutting but I need to thickness another chunk of wood for that as i wasted a bit getting the settings right on the cutter. There will be a black covering board for the roof top with a piece of boxwood trim around it.
Well.... here goes.... wish me luck as I dive off the deep end. I hope there's water in the pool... metaphorically speaking.

steamschooner reacted to ggrieco in Heroine 1838 by ggrieco - FINISHED - Scale 1:24 - Western River Steamboat as she appeared before hitting a snag in the Red River
With a three day weekend coming up, I had hoped to finish the starboard side planking and painting this week. I didn't quite make it. I kept finding new details that I had forgotten about - like the doors.
Kevin's drawing shows external four paneled doors. I went with something simpler for the internal doors that would not be seen from outside.
Cutting grooves in the door rails. The rails are .08 inch thick with a .031 inch groove.
Assembling the door.
Hardware for the door.
Completed door.
The port side will be left open with only the lowest three strakes installed. I still have a little more framing to do for the paddle box, deckhouse and outhouse.
Planking the starboard side.

steamschooner reacted to druxey in Greenwich Hospital barge of 1832 by druxey - FINISHED - 1:48 scale
Postscript:
Since the last posting there have been revisions! The sweeps were discovered to be sized for a single-banked boat not, as in this case, for a double-banked one. So, a new set of 12 sweeps have been made, 15' 0" as opposed to 19' 0". I also took this opportunity to paint the dolphins on one side the correct way up! Now, at the risk of incurring the wrath of the moderators, I'd like to mention that the full story, along with various techniques of making small open boats will appear in a full-color book shortly. Stay tuned!
Again, my thanks to all who contributed to this log. You helped to make a better model.

steamschooner reacted to Omega1234 in Majellan by Omega1234 - FINISHED - 1/200 - Luxury 37 m Motor Yacht - Miniature
Hi everyone
Thanks for all of your Likes and comments, especially in relation to the 'little accident" that befell Majellan.
Well, after the accident, I've put her all back together. The following photos show Majellan so far. A little bit of glue, putty and much swearing and, she's well on her way to being fully healed.
The superstructure has received a few more coats of paint. Once I've completed the painting of the superstructure, I can then get on with the lower deck's fit-out. Oh...and let's not forget that there's also the painting of the hull, the addition of the rudders, propellers, radars, aerials, and adding the ship's boat and jet skis to the garage, etc, etc, etc.
In other words, lots more work to go!!! Fun, though.
All the best, everyone!
Cheers
Patrick

steamschooner reacted to Mirabell61 in SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse 1897 by Mirabell61 - FINISHED - scale 1:144 - POF - first German four stacker of the Norddeutscher Lloyd line
Thanks Gerhard,
sure, its a tricky area in place where there is only the thin promenade deck to fasten the stachions.
But that will have to wail until the deck housings are done.
Made a few more raw doors and windows today and some light-vents stb / port of the foremost housing walls (only dry fitted, finaly mounted later on
Nils)

Thank you Denis.
in the moment I`m checking the hights between the decks in relation to the scale. Here some (airline 1:144) figurines come very handy
Nils
need some strong support for rilling the row of holes for 4 vent tubes later on
maybe the deckhousing walls are still a bit too high, but I also have to consider the deck curvature

Hi Patrick,
I`ve been straining my mind how to fasten stanchions in this special area, where there is hardly any "flesh" to safely fasten the stanchion to the deck above.....
Found this solution now, hope it works out well.....
Nils
sorry for pic quality, its only to show the area I meant....
the next are self explaining, together with the little dummy I made
The stancion pin is 0,8 mm and the spacer tube slipped over it is 0,9 mm inner diam. / 1,3 mm outer diam.

Greg,
your kind compliment is very much appreciated.....
As already said, I`m beginning with the major part of the promenade deck cabin housings......
Nils
the rounding front requires a light framework
here also the lower davit bearings can be seen (attached from outside to the L-rail that holds the railing
the aftwards stay of the foremast is still missing

steamschooner reacted to ggrieco in Heroine 1838 by ggrieco - FINISHED - Scale 1:24 - Western River Steamboat as she appeared before hitting a snag in the Red River
This week I started tying the two decks together with the side planking but, first I had to finish framing out the paddlebox.
Lighter vertical timbers were added between the main posts to frame out the windows and add support to the planking.
Before I could continue, I had to frame in the stairs. Since all the stringers were exactly the same, I decided to let the mill do the work.
First stringers going in.
Second stringers and starting to frame the paddlebox and forward deckhouse.
Planking the paddlebox and deckhouse.
Adding the stair risers and starting to plank the paddlebox.
Detail of the paddlebox planking. There were three strakes and then a moulding that continued the run of a short rail that ran the circumference of the deck. The rail, moulding and lower three planks were painted black. All the planking above was painted white.

Bill,
I tried your excellent idea straight away,,, it looks much better than with full diam. wire, unfortunately I do`nt have macro focus but I think it shows on the encl. pic... Thanks again
The next improvement will be to choose thinner wire for those loop-ends, plus flattening...
Nils
stanchion wrap loop flattend......

Nils
the handrails are 0,5 mm wire
in the foreground my fingers ( for scale comparism). The figurine is 1:160 railway scale N, it should be 1: 144

Update
only a small update today......
priming, painting doors and cabin walls, making stanchions for handrails....
This relatively small aft cabin is a test for making the extensive promenade deck cabins in the same way
Nils
the holes for tht handrails are brought in already
raw doors with window frames and knob handles, need 5, one is spare as sample for later on...
the pins, surplus material from the knobs will be clipped off flush with the rear doorside
first paint coat, needs some touch up
stanchion holders for the handrails, the loops will be closed when the rail is in position
test sample piece for handrail making

Many thanks Albert,
today I tried a sample of structuring the aft cabin walls, double story windows only dry fitted...., doors and handrails not made yet...
The riveting is slightly overscaled, but I wanted it to be this way and visible also for the viewer`s eye in 1 m distance
