enjoying watching your excellent build very much Ron as I am just about to finish planking my hull. I notice you haven't added bumpkins . I am in two minds myself as they just don't look right to me & very vulnerable to damage, any thoughts?

geoff reacted to robnbill in Tapering masts, spars and yards
You would need to use a very small spokeshave. There are a number of techniques that can be used to round the masts. One is to flatten the sides evenly to the correct diameter, then round the corners out. Another method is to turn the dowel in a drill or lathe and use files and sandpaper to bring them down. This is the method that I use. Of course, for many masts and spars, you end up doing a bit of all of the methods since there are flattened sections of the spar and other areas where it tapers down to toothpicks.
I would suggest that you go to the hardware store and purchase dowels slightly larger than you need and start experimenting with the various methods until you find the one that works best for you. This will also give you spare material should you break one.
If you do a search of this forum using key words you will find examples of all of the above and more.

Well, I tried lying down to do some work. No good. I fell asleep and when I awoke I could not remember why I was on the floor.
I have just realised that I cannot remember when last I had a good idea. I hope they haven't gone for good. Scary!
Mike.
Ps. sorry for interrupting this serious topic.

I am considering lying down to work as I will be close to all the bits and pieces that I drop.
When I have tried this out I will report back.

I like Caldercraft & Victory Models instructions myself, not had any experience of others but understand Chuck's Syren instructions are excellent. All the best, Geoff

Wikipedia states a length of about 140 ft. and about 400 tons. Iassume the 140 ft. at that disp. would be on the gundeck which should give us a 27 in. hull and maybe 35 in. or so overall at 1~64. Not bad to work with. Amateur, you can always resort to reminding the Memsahib that the many hours spent on this are not hours spent hanging out with those ne er~do~wells at the local watering hole. Works most of the time.

may I throw my hat into the ring and suggest 2 books by Keith Julier? "Period Ship Kit Builders Manual" & "The New Period Ship Handbook" published by "Special Interest Model Books" As a relative beginner I find them both invaluable. Geoff PS I nearly forgot! "Rigging Period Ship Models by Lennarth Peterson. No text but lots of fantastic rigging drawings

thought you might like to know that I have just sent a message to John Wright at Caldercraft/ JoTiKa regarding some of our members difficulties. I have known John for many years & I told him I am personally concerned over this.I hope I haven't overstepped the mark, but it may do some good . I will let you all know when I get a reply. All the best, Geoff

I ordered the ensign for my Badger from BECC flags as well. They are cloth, so I think they end up looking a little more realistic.

or do it the easy way! I buy "Becc Flags". from "model flags.com" They list 100's of types & sizes printed double sided on a flexible material which can be stiffened with dilute PVA glue

Guys thanks very much for the feedback this kind of support makes my transition from the other forms modelling to period ships that much easier, and as a new guy that much more welcomed.
Cheers

I agree with Matti. It's a brush & water based acrylics for me every time. I found airbrushing too fiddly & time consuming, at least with acrylics you can clean your brushes quickly in water!

would a reject contact lens do the same job?

geoff reacted to CaptainSteve in The Kit-Basher's Guide To The Galaxy
If an adventurous soul wished to try, they may even take a 3mm to 4mm watch-hand and magnetise it ...
They might then decide to float that watch-hand in a few drops of (very thin) oil under Geoff's reject contact lens and then affix it to Buck's piece of cedar (see above).
Just Sayin' ...
[EDIT: If someone ever does this, PLEASE quote this post and add photos]

Hey Buck,
Absolutely incredible! I really like the finger joints on the box. I think CaptainSteve is right that this may become part of many builds.
