Looks fantastic Mark, really nice job. Interesting how the quarter galleries have that ledge.

Very nicely done! Amazing how you guys building these plastic models with the PE add-ons don't go cross-eyed in the first hour, let alone after a ship or six.

OK, another one done. A final few photos to show the wolf and the sheepdog depending on what side you're on.

Spyglass:
Great suggestion, which I took -- see picture and much improved rudder appearance.
Re the barrels: I tested each carriage as I mounted it by making sure I could place a cannon through the windows -- particularly important because I framed the windows which makes them smaller. One or two are tight -- but I can get it done.

David

Landlubber Mike reacted to DocBlake in Royal Navy Ship of the Line Cross-Section by DocBlake - FINISHED - based on Mamoli's "Constitution" - 1:93 scale
I'm working on the long guns on the gun deck. I used some boxwood trucks I had left over, and replaced the metal axles in the kit with walnut axles. I colored the carriage with a red Sharpie, then gave it a coat of poly. I'm not sure how much hardware and rigging I'll use at this very small scale...maybe none. I will place cap squares, though. The red Sharpie on walnut turns out pretty nice, I'd say! There is only one caveat: Sharpie ink can "bleed" a little with polyurethane. If you don't want your trucks to turn a little "pink" using the same brush to poly the red parts and then the trucks, seal all the Sharpie colored wood first, let it dry and then do the trucks . The second coat doesn't matter, since the red is sealed.

All four long guns are completed. The kit provided cap squares that actually looked pretty good so I used them. I'm not planning any further hardware or rigging for the cannon carriages. At this small scale, it will be impossible to rig blocks that aren't 18 scale inches long! In my opinion, nothing ruins the appearance of a rigged gun more than out of scale blocks. Ditto for eyebolts and rings that are out of scale.

Use the 3" 90 tooth .03 kerf slitting blade. As close to a mirror finish as you could get on wood

Worked on channels: first picture shows channels with pins in. They are only 1.5mm, so it's delicate drilling.
Second pic shows the channels installed on the ship.

They look great Mark. How did you make the tops to the stove? Are those metal? Wood?

Landlubber Mike reacted to rafine in Prince de Neufchatel by rafine - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1:64
I've now done the upper hull planking. This is all of the planking above the wales. This was done with boxwood strip from the reopened Crown Timberyard. .Just as good as before. Fitting between the gunports and around the sweep ports was a pain, but not that difficult. After an initial sanding, I aded treenails by drlll and fill, using #75 holes and walnut filler. I'm not all that happy with the results, but in my current circumstances, I have no reason to believe that it would come out better if I did it all over again The final step was to finish with Wipe-on Poly.

I've now completed the deck planking. The deck is planked with holly strips. I decided to plank over the openings in the subdeck and mount the deck furniture items on the deck, rather than inset them into the planking. The caulking is simulated with pencil on one side and one end of each plank. After the planking was complete, I "treenailed" the deck using the drill and fill method. The holes are #75, filled with golden oak filler. The deck was then finished with Wipe-on Poly. The next step was to add the waterway, which was done with 1/4 round strip that I had on hand. The waterway was painted red and then glued in place. Lastly, I touched up the bulwark paint, as necessary, as result off-me less than careful sanding of the deck.
Next up will be the planking of the upper outer hull.

Very nice work! Well done!
Im reading the second book in Ian Toll’s series on the Pacific War. Spruance plays a key role in the war effort, cool to see someone building the ship named after him.

First side now finished, with addition of the stern side window and the top rail. I noticed that the stern side windows in the Amati pics and some other build logs are more simply painted, and having now done these with discrete window frames, I can see why. Lots of retouching multiple times.
Now on to the other side, and then the stern fascia.

Decoration on first side completed (except for the large stern windows, which I'm painting now). The approach of using the window cutouts on the decorations worked really well and everything lined up.
I also found that the best way to fit the decoration that abuts the curved endings of the top rail is to dry fit the rail and position it with the decoration dry-fitted, to get both right as it's a tight and exacting fit.

David

I have started on the side rails. The instructions suggest fixing the lowest rail according to the plan drawings, then attaching the lower row of decorations, then fixing the next rail to the top of those, and so forth.
When I went to the plans and took measurements, I wasn't confident in how they were matching the actual boat, and was concerned that the decorations would not line up properly -- would I miss the window alignment or something further up.
Since the lower row of decorations has cutouts for the tops of the windows, the alignment of the decorations to the windows is really the critical thing. So per the attached picture, I aligned the decorations on the windows and taped them. Now I can install the lower rail up against them, and know that my starting point will work all the way up. Same thing going across the center -- I can align the top of the decoration to a dry-fitted second rail.

David

The lowest side rails are now in, and I have painted the hull above them, ready for decoration.
I'm going to do this side all the way through first, so I can do the other side (which will be my display side) better if I learn anything unexpected.

Landlubber Mike reacted to DORIS in HMS ROYAL KATHERINE 1664 by Doris - 1/55 - CARD
Hello dear friends,
I am very pleased, you like my work. Thank you all for your praise and kind comments.
Well, it seems to be a man´s figure, but if I understand well the description of Vale´s painting from NMM, the central figure is a carving of Queen Catherine.
http://collections.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/15079.html
It depends on the complexity of a particular statuette/decoration, but usually takes me about 2-5 hours. But for example a larger figurehead can take me more than two days....
Oh, good question.... We take turns with my husband or mom. Telling the truth, we often do things together, it's better and faster.
Thank you very much for your support and good advice.I am glad I have decided to recreate the Queen´s sculpture again and believe, now she looks better.
And how you asked about the furnishing of the great cabin - of course I am going to make it in a high level of detail. Maybe I will place there some crew members as well. The decks are not fixes in place yet.

Please enjoy the pics and have a great time.

And here I have finally created the sculpture of the Queen Catherine. I used her portraits and other sources of suitable information to achieve this appearance.

The clothing is in an ancient style similar to the Vale's painting.
