Last week I´ve got myself entangled with my ship´s windlasses. On AL instructions there are 6 of them and so, I began to cut, sand and drill the small pieces of wood.
After lots of it, I realised AL didn´t send all the wood I needed - frustration! Got some time sorting it out till finally decided to use another type of wood from my scrapbox (this one, some brazilian wood - still have to know what type it is):
As the first attempt was a fumble, thought some testing would be great and read carefully about what the windlass should look. AL gave me some metal for bars, first I painted them black, to a poor result - after scanning lots of immages I found that metal wasn´t common for that purpose and so, made some bars from toothpicks:
Following, the barless windlass, and then, the ready one - already varnished (still shining):
Next entry I´ll bring the boxes and containers I´ll keep on junk´s compartment.
(After reading my own post and seeing my pictures, a thought comes to mind - I really do need more light for my workbench)

Today, I Started by fixing the cradle , so that the Boat sits more centered . I then started making Cleats , I started by making metal ( brass ) one , That Failed miserably ( it ended up a blob of melted metal ) So I went online, Here as a mater of Fact. To Learn how to do it . ( This is a great website to learn new things ) I am Happy to be a member of M.S.W . Anyway , The first thing I realized is that I need thicker brass ( 1/8" thick for my scale ) There is an article in the metal Work, Soldering and Metal Fittings section here is the link :http://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/topic/4368-cuttingsanding-brass/page-1#entry125891
Michael Mott had made a posting that showed how he had made a cleat ( I belive for the Bristol Pilot Cutter ) I liked how it was done , So I made one out of wood Fashioned in that Manner ( it Scales to a 10" Cleat and will work perfect as the Bow Mooring Cleat). This was the way I was looking to make Cleats for a While now, Thank you Michael .
I did make all the Turnbuckles and got a great start on the Bow Chain Plate . Here are the Results

Hi ...
...Now is the time to set the the lower part of the rail ... now, when the glue is dry, when the construction is fully strong, I should adjust the grooves on the ends of bulkheads ... I should put the lower part of the rail in to them... Notice, the rail is composed of two parts, the upper and lower part. Now we need to set the lower part of it...:

OK ... Now, when the specific bulkheads are done, all the bulkheads should be attached to the keel ( I do not use glue yet ) ... Dowels need to be pushed through the round openings in the bulkheads ... Three square brackets should be set in the middle of the hull, they fix the front and the rear parts of the hull ... ( I do not use glue yet ) ...
... When everything is set in to the place all the elements need to be adjusted accurately in place once more, as shown in the draft ...
Now ... when I confident that everything is perfectly set, I apply glue with a brush to the all places where the elements touch each other ... When dry, I repeat it once more ... My opinion is that this is the best way of assembling and gluing the construction ...

MarisStella.hr reacted to aliluke in Armed Virginia Sloop by aliluke - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1:48
Hi Ken
Just spotted your question...no I can't - all the photos of the build were lost when my hard drive failed. All my model files for the AVS and many other ships that I was researching and scheduling just disappeared. I'm only just starting to realise how much I lost, nothing compared to the MSW V1 crash though...
I attach drawings of my memory of the process and a picture of the result on the finished ship. Best I can do I'm afraid. It is a cheats method but at this scale you can't even see knots this small in such rope. I think the rope was 0.25mm diameter. The bouy is about 10 - 12mm long. It is as close I can zoom in with my camera and an observant eye would see that my bouy rope has two cut ends...one too many.
Cheers
Alistair

Today , Was a day of many Hats, I started by masking the deck and then spaying 3 coats of Flat white ( I did not want the glare from the gloss ) I then trimmed the cockpit Coamings, sanded them, and Stained them Cherry . Then I Started making the Pintles and Gudgeons , This is the first time that I have made metal parts ( I learned how to make them here on M.S.W. ) The Coamings have not been glued in. Here are the results

In order to work properly, ... it is important to create a workstand ... Only then the bulkheads can be placed on the keel and stem correctly ...

Hi everyone...
Thanks for the comments ... It is not for me to rate it :) ... the truth is, when I do the kit designs it is always first on my mind as being better ... I give the most of myself, and there is always something more to learn and implement ...
so, back to the project...
...Work stand is a very important thing, I see that many are ignored it here ...my advice is :
create a stand in which you will hold the model during its realization. Use a flat board as a base, and two flat strips that you should strengthen on it, as a rail to the keel. It is also good to make even the stem carrier and stern post carrier, also of straight strips and strengthen them to the lower, horizontal strips. The whole stand for the realization of the models should be stable and the model on it must stand tightly and set so that the keel and the posts are vertical to the base. This is the only way to work properly.

MarisStella.hr reacted to Auvergne in Xebec by Auvergne - Amati - 1:60 - C. 1753
Following are 2 photos of what I was attempting to do with the grating aft...I am not pleased and feel my craftsmanship is little to be desired. I wanted some critique to see a better approach.
But first, let me say before I even started on this aft section I remembered I have a good size stack of 1/16" Birch wood that is just sitting on a shelf. So I began to think of replacing the 1x4x.5 planks with a cutout of the area with the Birch. I was successful at cutting a piece that slipped right into the exterior framing quite nicely. All I have to do is drill holes at 5/64" to show where the water would drain to keep vessel from pitch-poling upon being hit by a rogue wave.
My problem with this approach seems to be just how much of a realistic look I need to achieve. I am looking for a clean look which will look better than the kit part. I figure this is a good approach but was wondering if anyone had any ideas.
I am looking online to research the grating for the Xebec and potentially discover a better way.
(Actually, I am ashamed of the 2 photos I will show but some of you folks with more experience may be able to help.)
These instructions in the Amati kit (to me anyway), are difficult to understand. I also feel this is an opportunity to advance a scratch built section of the vessel but really need to see real time photos of the actual build from someone else.
Thanks for allowing me to ramble on. It is 4:30 AM where I am and I am half asleep.
