I guess it's goodnight on this one. There may still be a few tweaks but I'm calling it done. Trajta was a good build. It started out a little rocky, but that was mostly just where my head was at the time. With some renewed focus and help from Zoran and Don I was able to pick up and complete the build. It's interesting how the various kit designers put together the documentation for a project. Manual and plans - sounds easy enough. Everyone has their way of trying to get the idea across. I'm sure we each have a few favorite kit makers and maybe one or two never agains.

I think Marisstella is working hard on improving the weak points in their product. I know Don has had a hand in revising some of the documentation. For the most part Trajta was well thought out and well executed. And it's not too often you can get feedback from the designer. I have no problem recommending the product to others.

So what's next? In addition to the RC boats in progress I am leaning towards a square rigger again. Got a number of them on the shelf so it won't be an easy decision.

    Update :

for the mainmast I made a preliminary dummy mast-top to see how the shrouds and stays will be lead, and how it would look like.  Some sufficiant clearance to the mast is required due to the thickness of the mighty lateen yard, and hoisting it up to the top position. The main mast begins with 10mm square through the deck and reduces to appr. 8mm octagonal in section at the top. A parral set will hold the yard close to the mast. The mast-top again is 10mm square and fitted with brass rollers, for operating the falls

For the bottom boom of the mizzen mast sail support, I`ve fitted a dummy to check out the angle and alignment. I `ve been thinking of adding a light sun shade canvas and attaching some additional spars to the appropriate framing there

the bow sprit  is from 6mm square and reduces to appr. 4,5 mm round at the end. It is resting on two spacer lugs giving clearance to the figure head, and tied down with two rope ends......

    Dummy mast top

dummy boom for tying the mizzen sail bottom line, and frame work (perhaps for sun protection canvas, together with some spars)

the decoration of the aft transom plate is held quite simple and will not be overloaded with additional decore.....

Hah good ! ... ok, I will try to explain: The drawing shows double turn knot at the rope that holds the yard (twice around the yard) this rope go upwards through the block and then down to the cleat at the mast... The thinner rope is the parrel. It tightens the first rope to the mast . The parrel rope goes to the same cleat to the mast...(this makes two different ropes) ... The parrel rope goes down to the cleat, not through the block ...
So, my intention was to get You to understand the illustrations , but it is not hard to answer as well  By the way, I see You understood the illustrations, but with a bit of uncertainty (I hope I used the right word) ...
It is really pleasure to see You completed this model ... You get experience in single planking method and the sail making which is very important... In the end, the patient is invested and the result is here !! Ask all You need ...
    Sincerely Yours,
    Zoran

Part 276 – Main Yard Truss

The main yard truss described here, and the mizzen version, are identical to the fore yard truss.  The basic shapes shown in the first picture were cut out using a band saw with a 1/8" metal-cutting blade with a pasted-on pattern scrap as a guide.

I cut both main and mizzen at this stage to avoid another band saw blade change later.  I used the band saw to save time vs. the jewelers saw.  The basic profile of the truss was then filed out as shown below in the next two pictures.

The eyes at the ends were marked with dividers set from the band brackets on the yard, then drilled to accept 20 gauge copper wire.  The unfinished yoke is shown in a test fit in the next picture.

In the next picture the yoke has been rounded, polished, and again fitted to the yard band brackets.

The center hole for the truss arm bolt is shown in this picture with a straight length of 20 gauge wire inserted.  The next picture shows the fabricated truss arm.

The arm was made using sections of telescoping tube.  The eye that will fit into the mast band bracket was fitted into a slot at one end and silver-soldered.  A short length of 20 gauge wire was soldered into the other end.  In the next picture a flange has been soldered to the wire to hold the arm on the yoke, but allowing it to rotate.

The assembly is set up, upside down, for bolting to the yard band brackets.  Heads were first formed on one end of the copper bolts.  They were then inserted from the top side o be clipped off just above the bracket surface and peened like the right-hand bolt in the picture.  A square ended punch was tapped with a hammer in the position shown to enlarge the bolt head like a rivet.  The left hand bolt is not yet clipped.  The last picture shows the truss installed on the yard.

This picture shows the top of the yard.  All soldered band joints, though not very visible, were positioned out-of-sight under the yard.

Hi Mr. Mike... there are separated ropers for fastening the sail to the yard: each hole on the sail - one rope ... Each rope is fastened around the yard, the knot is on the top of the yard... the ends of the rope fall free down the sail ... The knots are the simple overheand double knots ...

Hi Mr. Mike ... are You sure this nettle is the same long as the ones at the drawing ? ... The sail could be shorten by banding the nettles around the yard. The yard with the shorten sail could be put in many positions, but the most common one is to put the yard into the same position as the ful sail is on ... The sail could be furled, so the complete sail is bound to the yard with the nettles. The nettle should be long enough ...

The sail looks great, Bravo !!

    Regards, Zoran

I understand completely on the reuse.  I was asking because the style of the drawings is very similar to the drawings in Darcy Lever's book Young Sea Officers Sheet Anchor. I tend to hoard books and I was not familiar with the illustrations so I wondered if there was a "new" book out there I needed to buy.

No matter. The drawings were excellent and a big help. I'll be working on the nettles tonite.

Thank you Zoran - I appreciate you watching over me on this project.

BTW - I was wondering about the nettle illustrations you posted. Where did those come from?

Nettles are next and I believe I can duplicate what those illustrations show - whipped at the ends, sewn at the sail. The yard is ready so I can give this bird some wings.

    update...

rigging the guns procedure has now become routine....., I found a way to get the 3 mm blocks harnessed into the tackle rope without too much distortion...
The guns will be presented in 3 modes...
    - ready for a broad side
    - in retracted position for barrel wiping out/cleaning and reloading, at maximum extention of the breech ropes
    - in secured  position (non battle) with decore lids (closed) in the bulwarks
