Well, now that I'm all caught up Augie, your Syren is looking awesome! I'd like to see an overall picture when you next post some progress pic's.

Nice pictures of progress Larry. Sjors doesn't realize that's why the Lake Erie ships were so tough, LOL. In all seriousness, the gunports and sweep ports look  great!

I'm testing some things out. I'll have a picture of the rig in a few minutes.

Like taught guitar strings, I have some test pieces of nylon string here. The one on the farthest right has been soaked in thin CA (I don't have my hopes up for this one). The others have varying viscosity's of Emler's. Drying time....

Drying time is over! I'll be using Elmer's glue in a 50/50 ratio with water. I got realistic sag with the lines that were drenched in the mixture. Onward with rigging!

Mobbsie, as a proud former Kentuckian, the Kentucky long rifles gave birth to snipers. Things have come a long from then up to when a Navy seal was able to snipe pirates off of a freighter off the Somalian coast.

I'd have to agree with Popeye on this. And there's also the fact that I have yet to see a cottonball smash through wood planking.

Mobbsie, LAMO!!! I've only built US and Canadian ships so I have no trouble with joint exercises.

We have some beautiful rainbow trout here in the Buckeye state. I prefer to fish for bass (all types), crappie, saugeye, muskie, and catfish. All of the above are delicious if prepared fresh. As far as entertaining a fishing party, I'm all in! At the end of April in fact I will be camping for three nights and will be doing nothing else but fishing and drinking beer; that's my taste of heaven.

Mobbsie, take you time my friend. We're all patient enough to begin with or we wouldn't be very successful with this hobby. My building will slow waaaaaaay down when it warms up enough to go fishing.

Frank, thanks a bunch for looking in. I've got a couple more things to get in place and then I am going to post an update. The running rigging really helps fill the dead space and I am starting to get excited with the overall look of things.

    Good day folks,

Well, what can be said other than that it is so sad that all the beautiful input has been lost from this site. There were so many wonderful models and a wealth of information for all to share. Now is the time for us all to rebuild the site together.

Today I will just post a photo of the stern of the Sovereign as she sits today while I consider if it is possible to revive the log as it previously was.

    Another Niagara build log....

I'm Dave, from Columbia, Missouri.  This is my fourth ship model project.  My first, the Marseille by Mamoli, I built about 30 years ago and it turned out well for my first kit.  Then I started the USS Constitution kit by Mamoli when I was in my 20's and got frustrated  and put it away (it's still in my closet).  I didn't build any more ship kits until I bought this Niagara kit 13 years ago.  After planking the hull and deck I again got sidetracked as our children were born and I put it away.  In the past few years I have completed two kits, both with the help of Bob Hunt's practicums, his Halifax kit and also the Kammerlander Duke William kit and I think these both turned out nicely.  Of course, there were step by step instructions so it was easy to just follow along and produce a good result.  So a couple months ago I decided to try a bigger challenge and complete my Niagara kit.

I have been trying to get some good photos and I'm having some trouble getting them to look as good as I want but here are a few, showing where I'm at currently.

I have benefitted from all the other Niagara build logs here, so thanks everyone for your assistance.  Patrick suggested I do a build log so here goes.

My main issue at this time is that the instructions don't really provide a lot of guidance as to the order to do the various steps in the masting and rigging.  I'm hoping I have done everything I should before starting on them.

I have done the rough shaping of all the masts and yards and I think I will continue to refine these and try to make them look like the plans show with all the various little parts attached to them.  So that's what I'm working on now.

I happily welcome any comments and suggestions!

    Dave B

Popeye, that is some fantastic work on the windows. I hadn't thought of using something like molded styrene for trim.

Sjors, I like seeing the progress. Just my two cents here... If you've got other bright brass on your ship then I would leave your pintles and gudgeons as is to match. As for historical accuracy, these are only representations of the real thing and the beauty is the builder's interpretation. Besides, the real thing wouldn't have fired cottonballs.

That's very clean looking Andy. The netting will look very nice when you get it installed. It's not that Sjors is so impatient, it's that your work on your Pegasus is very good and we all like seeing more pictures of progress for the "Ooh and Ahhh" factor.

Wayne, I've always lived by the motto of "It's easier to ask forgiveness then for permission". I will admit though, that motto has landed me in the doghouse from time to time. Looking forward to following along.
