Time for a very small update, just one pick today of the anchors and the new hold downs.

Next I will be working on installing the bolt ropes on my sails. All comments welcome.

So I finally got a bit of time and was able to get the forecastle stuff done.  I need to do a wipe on poly session and blacken the cannons/stack.

As I wait patiently for my HobbyMill order to arrive to complete my outer planking, I continue with some detail and deck work. I completed the quarterdeck bulkhead/screens which is a very fiddly little assembly with number of components that need to be dry-fitted and all squared up. I think it is a bit over-engineered, but so be it...

Instead of the fragile ply provided for the actual screens I instead used styrene (oh, the horrors, plastic!!). It flexs better in the curved frames and provides a nice smooth surface for paint.

After an initial coat of blue (Polly Scale B&M Railroad Blue) I decided to try my hand at hand painting the designs in more "period like" colors, as opposed to the black decals provided in the kit. I shamelessly took the method from Timmo's wonderful effort to hand paint them. Thanks for the brilliant example!

I started with a base coat of Polly Scale CP Yellow (the railroad colors are very useful...) and then once fully dry used mixes of white, yellow ochre and raw umber oil paints to shade and highlight the designs. Although I'm no artist, and these are attempt number three, I think they pass the test, though I may do a little touch-up here and there. I did some slight modification to designs for aesthetics and to better fit the design on the panel.

The panels still need their final trimming to shape at the top, and are merely dry-fitted in these photos. It will probably be a week before the oil paints fully dry.

A little update . . .  just to show a sign of life . I spent some time figuring out how I want to do the carronades. The following 3 pictures show the current state of the prototype. Obvious points of improvement are the elevation screw (in the picture it is really “screwed” up), the wheels need to be a bit smaller, and the holder for the recoil cable on the gun barrel needs to be more substantial. For all of these issues I have ideas how to change them, but so far my chronic lack of modeling time prevented me from doing it.

Sounds like you went above and beyond what you need to do to fix the keel, I would send an e-mail and try to get another one.

That’s how the deck is looking now.

Making a buoy was especially time and nerve consuming. Mine looks much battered, so I like to explain that this item is one of the original pieces of equipment of HMC Sherbourne I in 1763 and has seen 23 years of service, improbable as this may seem…

It was rather difficult to make pictures outside today, but I absolutely wanted to share my first look of a “complete” cutter – without the rigging lines, of course.

Many details need to be prepared before assembling. I think I will follow Kester’s log to do that.

One of the small details will be a proper fiddle block. This one was made from a 5mm and a 3mm single block glued together, not perfect. I wonder whether it would be better to simply lash two blocks together, an alternative proposed by Wolfram zu Mondfeld, but one that I can’t find on NMM’s models.

The brown things taped to the mast are the mast rings, which I made from brass wire, soldered and filed into shape. As there will be no sails, they should at least lie properly, and I thought paper rings too light.
I have to admit I’m quite pleased with the model that is standing for the first time complete with it’s impressive spars. This will give me the necessary boost for all the other small things that are to be prepared before anything can be glued on definitively.
    Cheers,
    Gregor

Well, I got a very little bit done today. I scratch built a rudder from some maple. I didn't like the thought of the plywood trailing edge being visible. There is a nice diagram in Chapman's American Fishing Schooners book showing how the rudders were fastened together. I tried to simulate the wooden plugs hiding the bolt heads on the trailing edge. Darker putty might have looked better. Thanks for looking!

    Build log part 47

    view to the interior

    sternplate supports

fitted two more outboard steps at the top, now 7 steps per side

fitted the focsile deck with all its "underneath", the catheads glued in place, removeable chimney of the galley oven mounted

    Overall deck view

fitted one additional post to both the ballustrade side rails

starboard anchor cable tied to the Messenger, portside cable put on the bit

the QD stair, when used, fouls a bit with the capstan spars on the gun deck, but I take that in account, and whoever does`nt see it won`nt bother anyhow

supports to the 4 foremast rigging posts

Thanks for the picture, that will help. The anchors are already glued but I think I will add a few pieces of scrap wood along the sides of the anchors to hold the steel bands, that should look a lot better. thanks for your help.

Time for a small update. I was able to get my first sail done, the Latina sail is on the right and my new sail on the left, I think mine looks a little better.
The sail I made has seams about half the size and mine are straight, the corners on mine are as sharp as I could make them, as I didn't like the rounded corners on the Latina sails.

I still have to add the bolt ropes, so far not to bad. All comments welcome.
