Finally finished up the gun stripes. The bows sections required carving away stock from the framework to allow for the thickness of the carrier plywood. I am also very satisfied with the color as compared to photographs available. While waiting for paint and glue to set I also finished up the lower transom down to the keel.

I then fabricated a deck pattern using the model structure rather than the plans with various pieces of spare stock. 1/16" square was used on the sides for ease of bending and being cross braced to maintain shape. The real challenge here was to not glue the pattern to the structure.

Once the pattern glue was set; reinforcement braces were added to assure correctness of pattern. I then cut a 1/32" sheet using the pattern.

The 1/32" pattern required a little perimeter fussing to sand to a press fit. I still have to add the slots for the two masts. This is what I will use as a pattern to now build the deck which I think will be much easier to build outside the hull than inside. I will also have the benefit of being able to access the inside when adding the hull planking. This may not be a traditional approach, but I will find out soon enough.
I am also thinking of using black glue on the decking to emphasis the grouting and stain the decking with colonial oak. I will do a test section first to see what it looks like.

What can I say except "beeaauuttiiful" . I know what you mean about the extra parts laying around. Seems like every project has some left-over things that need to be relegated to the realm of "extras". It's usually at that time when I finally, as a last resort, try taking a look at the directions.

Glad you both are there and that Piet arrived safely.

Hopefully we'll be able to see lots of photos once it's all over.

Guess who the very first face I see in the parking lot as I begin unloading my ships at the Exhibition this evening.... None other.
I knew him as soon as we made eye contact. What an amazing evening we had....and this was just the set up party.
I can hardly wait for tomorrow. Wish you were all here with us.

    Hi Dennis

Compared to the intricate pulleys, blocks, rigging, boom framework and other associated details that you've built into your AG, trust me, building a hull is child's play! You'll ace it, for sure!

    Cheers and all the best

Just phenomenal work, Denis.   Its an amazing amount of complexity that I never realized these ships had and you've captured them very well.

my tables are in the computer room.......the admiral has her desk in the corner.....and I pretty much have the rest of the room.  she is disabled with back and shoulder problems,  but she is not confined {I try like hell to keep her that way}.   I would like to have a separate room,  and keep the dust away from the electronics,  but she won't have any of it.......says she won't see me as much.   this is most likely true,  with the way I model,  but I like it as well.  I have someone to talk to,  and bounce my ideas off of.   as for the dust.......it the really fine stuff......I do the major sanding out on the porch.  yesterday,  for fun,  I wrote 'Popeye' on the monitor shelf on my desk........still waiting fro her to notice.   yea....I know.....time for the total cleaning of my desk

    Sam,

The key question is: 'Is she still your Admiral ...???' I know Mark enjoys the love of his life to the fullest, and I for one cannot imagine them having any static, even towards his planking, and sanding of this beauty of a build of his.

    Mark,

I would suggest a mixing of the two. Some yard work, followed by some planking ... it won't go fast, though it will move for'ard ... besides, as a good Dutch saying goes: You'll combine the usefull with the pleasurable. ... Another option is to let the yard go crazy ...   not an option I presume... ??

That's what we call 'a mobile unit' Bob. I'd rather be near at hand by the admiral ... I like a face to face communication, else there is always some form of static ... besides, a surprise visit from the admiral to the workshop can be very stimulating ...

A bit more fiddling with the Carb.
First I made a whole new one with a flange at the manifold side. The top air intake also needed to have the adjusting screw added, it was easier to make a new one rather than trying to fix the first one.

I "knurled" the edge of the adjusting screw by pressing the head of the 1x72 screw under the edge of a file and rolled it along on a flat surface of MDF then beveled the edged on the lathe. the spring came out of a tiny ball race which I took apart for the springs and balls.

I respect your comment Crackers...I can't guarantee.....but I will certainly keep it in mind.   still can't wrap my head around it though.......a guy like me having a model in a museum.   I'm not an expert or a shipwright.  I do thank you for the humbling comment

    Wayne and George:   thanks Wayne for the kind word    those guys came to me like that!    been very hard to put some meat on them bones.   all I can do is keep them from thinking about existential thoughts.......{ Divinity series running gag}

thanks Carl:   of late.......we've spent more time taking Gibbs out to the field,  than anything else   the admiral has been lax....I have come to know the phrase "when you least expect it"  ....   contrast will come soon.....not sure what kind of detail I will add,  but it will be colorful

If I am correct, (and I am no expert by any means) the maximum deviation is 4 thousands of an inch in any of the three examples. (Taking the maximum and minimum measures) I don't think that's something that can be perceived by the naked eye or that will affect in any serious way the building of a ship model. I think this is far beyond normal expectations.

turning the model around,  the rigging was redone,  and went even beyond that!  the bracket and eye bolt was installed.

after given time to dry,  the rigging was brought back into the picture.

the sway bar bracket was added and painted.

the sway bar was added in this picture........but the aft sway bar {chain} was added as well.  notice how it hangs limp,  as the boom is in the retracted stage.  when fully deployed,  this slack goes away and becomes a ridged counter for sway.  this 'bar' is a good example of the radius that the boom has in it's travel.......at this point,  the forward sway bar does most of the work.

    the hull fitting

    the boom fitting

the counter weight chain 'eye' brackets were added.   the path the chain will be routed can also be seen here.

I used a long pin to stake the chain on the pulley,  on the control panel,  and cemented in place.  the runout was set up the same as the boom rigging......from the deck side.

the spotlights were ready to go,  and they were cemented in place on the aft top bar.

the last thing I did.....was a spur of the moment thing.   that air horn,  visibly seen after I had made it,  was making me crazy.   I don't want to let you down Piet.......I hope you can see this from where you are,  but I refined it as promised.

I still have a bit more painting to go on it......undecided to leave parts brass,  or paint them copper.   but,  it will be trimmed and placed on the roof.   even though it's not in the Billing's plans,  it's a great idea.....too great an idea to pass up.
thank you Piet for your suggestion
