foxy got a reaction from etubino in HMS Victory by foxy - Heller - 1/100 - PLASTIC - with Dafi's etch & resin set
Well its on again with the fiddle blocks now strung and ready for use.
Then found a use of the Scale Warship resin heart blocks.
These are ideal once strung and painted for the bow sprit.
Once fixed and a paint these are ready for the next stage.
Just right for 1/100 scale.
On the subject of Heart blocks, made a big boob with Syren closed heart blocks, so have ordered some more , get it right next time around(tells one's self to read the instructions)

Well after the festive season its back to work on the Victory.
Made up the closed Heart blocks from Syren models.
Then started on the fiddle blocks, for those that have not used these, they come out quite well in the end, with care.
I start by gluing with pva white glue, leave for 24 Hrs under pressure.
Next remove and shape them with sanding sticks.
Last I drill out for ropes later.
Once done they are very robust and work too.
More soon shipmates.
Plus Happy New year to you all.

The blocks take up some time to make as most here know.
I do them some at a time, so as not to get bored and lose interest.
So its maybe seven or eight at a time..
This is how I do it, was wondering how others did this type of work.

A couple more pictures.
One of the heart blocks on the bowsprit.
Next a start on the crown that goes a top the crest on the bow.
Using the plastic base from the kit, filled in the corners and next will add the PE parts.
Note the lettering that will adorn the crest once this is painted.
More soon.

Jan,
You might try brushing the line with a 50/50 mix of white glue and water. It's always seemed to work for me on taming those springy lines. Looking super nice.

Hi everyone,
I did some work over teh last days. I reshaped one of my anchors (Still not perfect, perhhaps I'll need to build one myself). The problem is that it is to short, and too wide for the timeperiod. (and Corels casting is lousy)
I did some rigging on the foremast:
Problem is: miniature-rope does not quite behave like the real stuff. It allways curves in the wrong direction.
That's particularly annoying at the topmasts...
This is 0.15 mm Amati rope, it has been stretched, moisted, and waxed, and still...Problem is that the yard is so light, that it will not counterbalance the force of his springy rope...
I made some addiotional holes in the fore-tope to get the ropes down to the deck. A bit fiddly work, but I managed. (some of my ratlines worked themselves loose in the proces of rigging , That's a problem I still haven't solved)
In the meantime: on to the next ropes.... (same mast, other side of the ship)

My summer didn't go completely unspent...
(sorry for the quality of the pics, they were taken wth a not so goog cmera...)
All running riggin gof the bowsprit is more or less present. I 'only'' have ot belay the loose ends.
One of the problesm at this scale is taht the rope is quite springy, and the yards not heavy enough to prevent teh rope going everywhere.
I also redid the crowsfeet at the foremast, the rather whitish rope started to anoy me. Actually, I still think the crowsfeet should go altogether. It does look a bit out of place and period for this ship....

Next were the golden parts on the side galleries:
The white stuff you can see here is not filler, it is the glue I used.
I used kind of gap filling, montage kit. slow curing, remaining a bit elastic. As the fit of many of the metal parts was lousy, this gap filling stuff worked fine with me (especially, while the stuf can be easily cut with a knife when dry)
On this pic, you can see a second change I made to the kit: part of the smaller ports in the hull were assumed to be gunports by Corel.
However, on the ketting drawing there is no deck behind it (at least not at such a level that a gun could be placed at the port) Ketting assumes that these ports are just for ventilation/light. I decided to keep these ports closed. So they were not actually made as ports, they were just cut into the planks, using a small chisel.

Thisis how she was, one and a half year ago.
And to be honest, she is sitting on the table next to me, and I don't see much of a difference
More will follow soon.

Today I finished construction of the stern frame assembly. It won't win any beauty contests but, I figure it's all going to be covered by planking anyway. Here's a picture of the assembly after completion (still have some cleanup to do) and a couple of the frame assembly temporarily installed.

foxy reacted to StuartC in HMS Warrior by StuartC - Billing Boats - 1:100 - started 1/1/2014
Hi jbwok,
If you like filler this is the model for you, the planking is purely a base. I filled and sanded for hours to get the finish I was after. If you look at a lot of the build logs with copper plated bottoms, they have a filler top coat to allow for a good finish. There is no shame in filler
I came to the same solution as yourself for the gun ports, I made back boxes about 8mm deep, which I attached prior to doing the planking. Here are a few pictures I was sent

Out of the mouths of Admirals......
My Admiral just watched me tie what seems like my 50,000th ratline and says to me..."Don't put too many strings on your ship....I want everyone to see all of that fine wood work."
Has any one heard that before?

A few more photos.
I must say and confess that I am not 100% happy with my results so far. I just realized I am rushing things and I'm making some mistakes. So starting today I will slow down and do things more carefully.
First mistake: I placed those horizontal beams before sanding the deck. Huuuuge mistake. Nothing really bad happened, only more a more difficult and time consuming job.
Fitting of a piece of wood to form the curvature of the beams that later will make the deck curve.
Once the columns are glued, the piece of wood is removed and the curve remains.
Fitting of false deck slots against bulkheads is awful.
