GioMun got a reaction from GrandpaPhil in Swift by GioMun - FINISHED - 1:48 - Pilot Boat - from Artesania Latina plans
Hello shipmates! And Happy New Year! I hope this 2023 will bring us a lot of fun in our workshops.
Thank you @archjofo for your kind words. I'm a fun of your work so its a pleasure to know that you liked my work.
And thank you all for all the likes and comments.
So, a little update. The hull is ready, ready to receive mast and sails.
Made the new base, and of course, Jack got his new unifrom!!
I hope you like it. Next will be masting and standing rigging, wich is very simple in this model.
See you soon.
Greetings.
Giorgio.

Hello shipmates!!
Just a small update. Y have installed the waterpump and the anchors. They are made of bronze, blackened.
One of them shows the cable, the other is just tied to the side of the ship.
The water pump is made of wood and bronze too.
Also installed the boom support with the first block of her manouver.
Next time i'll show the mast wich are under construction now.
See you soon. Hope you like it.

Hello! It's been a long time since last post. But i made same progress.
I maneged to find information about the Katy of Norfolk, another schooner that looks very similar to the Swift, i guess both ships come from the same plan, maybe the one that you can find in the Chapelle book i mentioned in another post.
Thanks to a fellow modeler from this forum i could find at least a picture of the Katy plans and now i can properly complete the Swift.
I completed the deck funriture, some finishing and more details. I hope you like it. Please tell me what do you think.
@Tim Holt i can't say anything about the ArtLat kit because i don't have it. Remember i'm building this model just using their set of plans, the rest is all scratchbuilding.
Thank you for all comments and likes.
As you can see, most of the work on the deck is ready, still missing the water pump and anchors. Then i can start with masting and rigging.
I hope you like it.
See you soon!!
Greetings.

Hello mates!
A little progress. I made the gunwales, and some work in the "cockpit".
But first of all i want to mention that i recived some fittings from Syren Ship Model Company, thank you @Chuck for your fittings and rope, they are very fine made, and i hope i'll be able to use them properly. I'll be buying more for sure.
And here are some pictures of my model. The gunwales are made from chilean Rauli, an excellent wood from Chile. Here you can find it as mouldings for carpentry.
Also y made and installed the tiller. Still missing something on the tip, i have to investigate a little more. I hope you like it.
Still some finishing to do. Next will make some belayings and hull fittings. I'm also designing the deck furniture.
Alright see you next time.
Keep the good modelling!
Cheers.
Giorgio.

Hello mates!
Thank you Cathead and Tim Holt for your comments and everyone for the likes.
Yes, i'm sure this pine is related to the araucarias that you have seen in Chile, although this species is brazilian, from the south, a much colder place than the rest of Brazil, so the wood is harder, similar to the chilean environment where the araucarias are found.
I saw your build, and i liked it. I complitly agree with you, this little ship deserves better. I liked the investigation you made about it, and what you found on Chapelle book. I have another book from Chapelle, named The Baltimore Clipper.
Of course the main subject is different, but when it talks about developement, it makes some comments about the Virgina Pilot Boats, and shows some paintings and a body plan too.
I hope this is useful. I think it is. I can see that the main mast, in both ships, seems to be a little more tilted than the foremast. Of course, no one saw this in Artesania Latina.
As for my model, i made some progress. Installed the thiller, made the nameplate, i made it from boxwood (buxus sempervirens). It is the first time i did it so i don't know about the resault. I hope you like it!!
Now i'm working on the taffrail, gunwale, and some deck furniture. That will come shortly, i promise.
Hope you like the pictures.
Also made and installed the bowsprit.
See you soon.
Happy modeling time!!
Greetings.
Giorgio.

The wood i'm using on the planking, hull and deck, is a wood that is locally named "pino Brasil", it's real name is Araucaria angustifolia, a very nice pine, that allow a nice finishing.
After finishing the nailing i stained it, the black part is shoe staining ink, and the rest is just wood staining products.
Thank you for watching!! I hope you like it.
Cheers!!

Hello modeling friends.
The model is planed according to the plan drawings of Gerard Delacroix, Le Fleuron 1729.
Scale: 1/60, Wood: Elsbeere (Sorbus torminalis).
I will build the model as "La Charpente", as shown in picture 0.01.
i.e. only the carpentry / joinnery,
without interior fittings and carving of the exterior.

Excellent work Johan as always.
Your work is from another planet, really.
Can i ask you a question? How do you polish your brass pieces? I mean what do you use? I really like that.
Congratulations again. Ausgezeichnete Arbeit!!

Fixing the topgallant shrouds
A long time ago I dealt with this topic in more detail, but without any concrete result. However, I can no longer postpone the implementation of this detail. According to my research and a corresponding interpretation of the description in the monograph of La Créole, the topgallant shrouds are now fixed by lashings, which are attached to the fittings of the deadeyes. The respective lashing is made with thimbles.
On the next picture I show the course of the topgallant shrouds using the main top as an example.
So once again thimbles had to be made, 24 of them in total. In relation to the deadeyes, the thimbles should not be too big, of course. That's why I had to introduce another thimble size (ø 0.9 mm / ø 1.2 mm / ø 2.0 / ø 2.5 mm) in addition to the ones used for this model so far. For this purpose I bought brass tubes with a diameter of 1.0 mm, which finally resulted in thimbles with a diameter of about 1.6 mm.
In the meantime I only make the thimbles with a suitable centre punch. With the cone-shaped point I form the tube section into a thimble with lightly dosed hammer strokes, as shown in the following picture.
To make the strops for the lower thimbles I use served ropes with ø 0.35 mm. For tying to the fittings of the deadeyes, eyes are formed as shown in the drawing before.
The last picture shows the finished strops, 4 x 3 pieces in total. The shorter strops are for the mizzen mast.
I will report about the fixing of the topgallant shrouds on the model soon.
To be continued ...
