Thanks Buck, I just might have to copy your compass.

Just a few quick pics of my Turks head.

Well I finally got one of the oars done, nine to go. It took awhile to come up with a design for the whipping.

I picked a spiral hitch(also called French whip) with a 3 pass/5 bight Turks Head for the decorative ends. In real life these knots are fairly easy, but making them to this scale was a challenge. I made jig for starting the first pass of the Turks head that's an inch square. It was then transferred to the oar, tighten knot, and finished it with 2 more passes.

So after 3 months- maybe 4, the stirrups and footropes are finally finished.  I realized I've been working on these yards for over a year.  It took longer to make and outfit these yards than it took to assemble the frame and plank the hull!  Crazy.  Oh well.

Here are the fore yards with stirrups and footropes

The main yards.  The attached tags have the name of the yard. I'm getting old and can't tell the difference sometimes, especially since many of the fore and main yards have the same dimensions

    finally the mizzen

Here's my high tech storage apparatus.  I spent quite a bit of time building this to protect the yards and the footropes.

Given that I paid for my DVD, I feel no guilt grabbing all the videos from that site. I recommend "Save From Net":

Some of you may be wondering about the legitimacy of this browser extension. Well, I did a google search for it and it appears to be clean. It also got past my virus and malware scanner on my PC. Just a note - it does not appear to work with versions of Chrome above v35. I used Firefox to grab the videos.

I've collated all the 77 videos available on YouTube of the Australians' visit to Dr. Mike. The complete list (with the  titles in Russian) is at

    https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5wX2_PJGI8sxN_zzXNTWaZ9qi-U_9Zp7

I've used Google translate to compile the list in English with links but I find I can't paste the sheet without losing the formatting, and I don't seem to be permitted to attach Word or Excel files. So if anyone wants this list, you can download either the Excel or Word files from DropBox at

    Over on Youtube on the chanel "Modelsworldru";
    https://www.youtube.com/user/modelsworldru/videos
you can see about 80 (!) videos from what I believe is this Dr Mike. Most of them about 30 mins long!
This might actually BE in part the DVD and MORE.
Prepare for loooong nights I think it is almost an entire build log in video format. And other stuff too.
Really made me wanna order some stuff from Proxxon. Seems to be very nice machines.

    Cheers!

The amount of work you have put into this is awe inspiring! What material did you use for treenailing the deck? Was it a contrasting wood, or did you use brass?

Pops, thank you, I went and looked at your log after posting that last comment, should have done so before. I'm tempted to try that (building my own transom) as I like the look much better.

On to the forms and keel, which I decided to share photos of because I think I set these up a little differently than other logs I've seen.

As I do a fair amount of home carpentry and woodworking, I have a ton of clamps and squares and such around. Here the keel form is held vertical with a rafter tie (on the left side of the image) while the cross-form being glued is held perfectly square in all three directions with two solid corner squares.

Taking a page out of my experience building Guillow balsa-frame planes, I mounted the keel plan on a sheet of wood, covered it with tracing paper, then used sewing pins to hold the keel exactly in place while gluing. The instructions say to ensure that the inner curved surface is exactly in line with the plans, never mind if the rest of the joints or surfaces are slightly off, so that's what I did.

The joint surfaces themselves were slightly off, such that if you clamped them together the keel twisted slightly. So I used paint bottles to weigh down the assembly, and inserted more pins at shallow angles to hold down the pieces (since I couldn't get bottles right on top the joints with other pins sticking up there). Closeup insert at lower right shows this. I've since taken the keel off and it's perfectly flat/straight.

Next update may be a while, as I'll be slowly clamping and gluing one form at a time, and we all know what that looks like. Will be carving the rabbet in the meantime, and we all know what that looks like too unless I do something especially right or wrong.

I'm back from my trip, so I have continued some work with this boat. Over the weekend, I completed the standing rigging.

I have seized shrouds many times in the past, but I have never been satisfied with the results. This is the theory:

So how do you do that in miniature scale on a ship model? The answer is to use crocodile clips, like this:

If you can't see what's happening, I have created a series of diagrams that show how the seizing is accomplished. The text and pictures are self-explanatory.

    This is the result:

I also added an eye bolt for the mainmast stay. Mackay's plans indicate that this was present, but did not indicate where it was attached - so I took a guess.

    The boat as of tonight:

Next I should tackle the spars and sails, but I am thinking of buying a cheap sewing machine to help me make the sails. The sails are therefore on hold until I do a bit of research and learn how to sew on spare cloth. Neither can I attempt making the oars, because I want to reserve that for when my new lathe arrives. I suppose i'll just make the toolbox and a few other little accessories while I wait.

It also appears that I have run out of rigging thread. Let's hope that my local hobby shop stocks the same thread used by Model Shipways.

Hey Ken, great to see another Bounty Launch model. No need to precondition the wood before using it. My only suggestion is to stain the wood prior to using, if you plan to stain and not paint.

Very nice Al. Just a word of warning - on the unplanked side, I recommend that you extend the planking from the main deck further down by one plank. The channels for the deadeyes and the strops attach there. Study your plans carefully. As you can see from my build (picture below) the channels attach to the 3rd plank. Yours only goes down 2 planks.

(edit) also for your reference here is Dan Vadas' build. Notice that his channels attach to the 3rd plank also: http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/gallery/image/1782-starboard/
