Canute reacted to Keith Black in Sternwheeler From the Susquehanna River's Hard Coal Navy by Keith Black - 1:120 Scale
Thank you, Erric.
Thank you to everyone for the comments and likes.
Let the weathering commence!
Before. 😢
After.
It's not perfect but it's a lot better. I think I was so disappointed in the quality of the bells I received that my efforts matched the bells.
The ship's bell sits at the correct height and looks much much closer to what the original photo shows. The searchlight looks more like the photo searchlight and less like a loudspeaker mounted atop a 1934 Ford van blaring out propaganda to the masses. The bell I'm using for the searchlight is 0.15 inches in length.
Thank you guys for being part of the journey and for your support.
Keith

For what it's worth, if my memory and understanding are correct, there were hand pumps on even larger riverboats like Arabia for just this sort of scenario (priming boilers when the steam was down). Granted, that was in the mid-1800s, so by your era any sensible crew may have told the idea of a hand pump to take a long walk off a short barge and installed a gas pump like you're suggesting.

I'm sure they must have? But the reason I'm going with a gas engine is because of the two man crew. If the boiler isn't working this tub would have been dead in the water. The furnace auto feeder had to work with a cold boiler as it's a beast positioned right in front of the open furnace plus they would need the lights up and working. I don't see a hand pump being an option for getting water into the boiler in the morning. All that plus the possible gas cans on the bow.
Thanks for commenting, Keith. How goes your battles?

Canute reacted to clearway in Sternwheeler From the Susquehanna River's Hard Coal Navy by Keith Black - 1:120 Scale
they had generators that ran off the steam engine as well Keith if memory serves me right all the electrical gear on a lot of the old steamers were supplied that way.

Thank you, Ken.
I've fixed the searchlight and working on the ship's bell and that fix looks promising. More news and photos at six.

Canute reacted to GrandpaPhil in Oryol 1902 by GrandpaPhil - Orel - 1/200 - CARD - Russian Battleship
@Keith Black, @Coyote_6 and @king derelict, thank you all very much!
Thank you to all who have hit the like button or just stopped by!
Those railings are quite time consuming, but worth it. It lets me make “photoetched” parts without the photoetch.
The turrets definitely gave me a run for my money, but I am very happy with how they turned out.
Here is the Oryol with the secondary battery complete and installed!
I am currently working on installing eyebolts to take the rigging.
Then I will rig the stacks, make and install the 47mm guns and searchlights, install and rig the masts/yards, add the ship’s boats, add the rest of the fittings away from the main superstructure to include the hull fittings and then add the flags, tentatively in that order.
I’m working from the inside out to avoid having to work in an any more enclosed space than I have to.

Canute reacted to RGL in Warhammer Orc project by RGL
Orctober is coming; I wanted to do something never done before x the 4 Orcs of the Orc-Pocolypse,. I don’t play the game but dammit some of the painters are just the most beautiful things you’ll ever see (past a wooden ship of course)

Canute reacted to DocRob in Brabham BT45 by DocRob - FINISHED - Model Factory Hiro - 1/12 - multimedia
One subject out of an earlier phase of the build was still aggravating me, the coil springs, which hold the exhausts in place. There are eight and I couldn´t add a single one, despite trying really hard.
Then I had an idea. What if I insert a copper wire into the coil spring, to bend it easily into the needed curve. I tried and it worked.
Half an hour later, this issue was fixed and I have an open issue less on my schedule.
Cheers Rob

Looking very good, The wash enhanced the finish a lot. The plane is so positively ugly, I had to buy one myself .

Added the majority of the decals, and there were loads of stencil ones! 😬 but got there slowly.
Also added weathering washes using Flory Models washes. Small and delicate parts are becoming an issue now, leaving as many as possible off until I have got the folded wings on. Still to finish the canopies, props, tail hook and final fix of the undercarriage. Getting close! 😁
Thanks for looking in and the likes.

Canute reacted to John Gummersall in Stage Coach 1848 - John Gummersall - Artesania Latina - Scale 1:10
It has been awhile since I last updated. Summer has hit and all sorts of distractions come up the lead me away from the building. This stagecoach will get completed, it will just take awhile.
Working my way across the side and up to the top with the planking. The section circled in red, according to the instructions, should be planked with vertical planks. Not sure it matters in the end, but I liked keeping the planking the same directions as the lower planks. These four sections were planked with horizontal planks,
With planking almost complete, I noticed a potential (shall we say) improvement. According to the directions, the areas circled below have either a horizontal plank (as I have) or the five vertical planks go all the way to the top. Either way there is a potential issue/improvement to me made. Looking ahead in the instructions there will be a horizontal plank going across the top to these two windows with a break at these two spots. I like the idea of the look of a continual plank, so the top 1.5mm will need to be carved out.
Below shows the top 1.5mm trimmed off the top of these sections. Room for the plank to be added later. Other than that, planking both sides of the carriage is pretty straight foreword. Once planked, the sides need to be trimmed with a knife and sanded smooth.
Final planked carriage ready for stain and varnish.
Next need to start coving the front, back, and bottom of the carriage. Starting in the middle with the first strip. A couple of large rubber bands really comes in handy here to hold the strip down while the glue dries.
Slowly working your way out with other strips. The outside strips will hang over the edge and need to be trimmed
Below you can see the strip hanging over the edge. Once the glue is dry, using a sharp x-acto knife, the strip is easily trimmed.
After trimming. Edge between side and front/back,bottom edges does not need to be exact as a strip of wood will eventually over up the seam.
Final shot from the top. At this point I plan to put about four coats of rub-on poly to help protect the carriage. In the end there will be more coats of the rub-on poly as more details are added, but for now four coats is plenty. In hind sight, I would defiantly be faster to use a foam brush and just paint on normal polyurethan rather then rub-on poly as rub-on poly is really thin and takes a lot of coats. I have a feeling when it comes time for more polyurethan I may just brush it on rather then use the rub-on poly. Having said that, rub-on poly lays down a really smooth coat with no worry about runs. We'll see what I feel like when that time comes.

Canute reacted to NavyShooter in US 6” gun by RGL - FINISHED - Panzer Concepts
Ahoy Greg!
I came across a video from Youtube today that made me go digging and find this thread again.
For those who are interested, here's a 3D visual of the process to emplace/assemble a larger 12" 1918 howitzer - but the string of steam tractors from this thread made me go digging here to link this build in.
Gives an appreciation for how massive these guns were!

Canute got a reaction from FriedClams in Sternwheeler From the Susquehanna River's Hard Coal Navy by Keith Black - 1:120 Scale
Tornadoes in the Poconos would be a new one. 🙄 Did you look at any locomotive bells, Keith? They might have one close enough. Otherwise she's growing nicely.

Ballasting and maiden voyage conducted today!
Still work to do, the forward elevator mechanism needs to be installed which will obviously adjust the ballasting, but I've got 2 pounds of free lead weight that I can move/remove as needed to fix that up.
Then the detail bits get added!
Very pleased!

That made me laugh. Welp, ya know them dang tornados can spring up along the Susquehanna at any given moment.

I started hearing the theme from Jaws as soon as I saw that. Very cool idea to add that.
To be honest, I thought it was a loudspeaker when I saw it and wondered why you had a tornado siren on there. It's nicely done, it's just a lot bigger than the one in the original photo. So I'd agree with you on redoing that one. Everything else looks great!

Canute reacted to Keith Black in Sternwheeler From the Susquehanna River's Hard Coal Navy by Keith Black - 1:120 Scale
Thank you, Jacques. This isn't a pretty vessel by any stretch of the imagination, this build is all about the warts.
Thank you, John. It's difficult to get good realistic results at this scale, The engine room walls are only 1.2 x 2.0 inches. Actually I goofed on both the engine room and pilothouse sizes. As I look at the images of what I modeled the engine room should have only been 1.2 x 1.6 inches and the pilothouse .6 x .6 inches instead of .8 x .8 inches. Though the larger size does make it a bit easier to model.
Thank you, John.
