After approximately three months I'm about to finish the Bluejacket Portland hull. I have temporarily placed the small portholes in the bow with a press fit. I would like to have glazing in them but have been unsuccessful in trying a few mediums. The inside ID is just 1/8" so acetate is not being considered. Have tried Envirotex and 5 minute epoxy with no success. Any ideas? John Elwood

Dan, you might be interested in marine artist Bill Muller. He shows a beautiful painting of both the Mary Powell and the Portland (which I am currently building). He lives in Cotuit, Cape Cod, MA. I have talked with him on the phone and found him a delight. He may be of some help to you. PM me for his phone number if interested. http://www.jrusselljinishiangallery.com/pages/muller-pages/mullerthumbs.htm John Elwood

Steamboats and other rivercraft - general discussion
jbelwood replied to Cathead's topic in Nautical/Naval History
Hi Sal, John Elwood here, I presume you've been aboard the SS Ticonderoga at the Shelburne Museum in Burlington, VT. If not, here's a little video of her including the walking beam. John- 281 replies

Here's another great steam boat kit from Inter-Action Enterprises. The CR Lamb is HO scale along with a utility scow from Train-Troll. Both kits are better than 90% laser cut. Twas a 10 month build for me. John- 281 replies

Hi Tim, Will absolutely follow along on this one as I'm currently working on the hull of Bluejackets Portland. The kit is way, way over my head but I needed a challenge. Giving myself two years to build her. Do not intend to start a build log as I often go for weeks between work sessions especially during the summer months. John Elwood

She's absolutely beautiful Bob. Can't wait to see her on launch day. How do you intend.to display her? I love working with styrene. Did a styrene knock off of the Sabino a few years back. John

Hi Sal, WOW, another first for our club and a very special award for you as the Syren was only your second build. It was a pleasure following this thread, but more importantly, getting to know you and watching the Syren come together at our meetings. Congratulations. Concerning the Armenia and that wackado walking beam contraption. I purchased Bluejackets Portland from Nic at the meeting Saturday. I too will likely struggle assembling that mechanism as the kit components are lacking in detail and instruction. Perhaps we can work on this together. John Elwood

Hi Clarence, I just finished fairing the older hull for the PORTLAND after about 10 hours of sanding and filling. Will be picking up the newer kit from Nic at the big conference in New London end of month. In talking with him I find that the newer hull is 1/2 inch longer. Might try adding a 1/2 inch section with some wood from the older kit. Question: Is the keel 1/8 square basswood or a smaller size? The plan sheet shows it at 1/8. The sponsons look to be a big PITA. Guess I'll have many questions once I get started. John

Glenn, Correction. After painting the base, I applied one coat of Envirotex Lite and then stippled the Mod-Podge. Ship and utility barge are fastened on top with double sided tape making the removable. John

Glenn, Here's the finished diorama. I first spray painted the base with Floquil Engine Black and then a light spray of Floquil Coach Green. When dry I stippled on one coat of Mod-Podge. Tried to mimic the look and color of a local river. John

Hi Glenn, Been following your build from the beginning. Here's an idea I came up with for my water line hull C.R.Lamb stern wheeler. As I wanted to picture her afloat in a water diorama this worked out great. Most viewers don't realize what I did. John

Darn Bob, how did I miss this thread over the past few months. The Pequot sure is a substantial looking work boat. Would love to see something like this in kit form. Judging from your past builds this will surely be a museum piece. I'll be visiting the shipyard often to watch her come together. John

Hi CH, Have been wanting to build the Portland for the past 10 years or so but didn't think I had the skills. I now have been offered the kit, original version, for just $30 from a close friend. Will definitely take him up on this. Want to see what it involves before I order the newer laser cut version. I see that you put her together in just 6 months. Approximately how many hours? I'm 75 and recovering from radical cancer surgery. Looking for a project to carry me through the winter. Hope I have the energy. Your profile gives me much encouragement. Any thoughts would be welcome. John Elwood

Hi Glen, Paddle wheelers are my favorites. Especially fond of stern wheelers. Yours will be most intriguing to follow due to the placement of the wheels. Hope there's enough room in front for a close up look. John Elwood

Hi Sal, Really sorry I missed the last meeting. John A. couldn't say enough about your Syren when I spoke to him recently. It's been 7 weeks since my surgery. I do expect to be at the October meet and hope you bring her back so I can have a look-see. In the mean time I've been going through your build these past few days and WOW, you've become a master builder over night. John E.

Keith, I recently completed the Inter-Action kit of the CR Lamb stern wheeler. Go to page 8 of the gallery of completed kit built models and take a look. You should be able to get Darryl Jacobs at Inter-Action. His eMail is "djacobs@inter-action.ca". I believe he recently moved to Vancouver, BC. Let me know how it works out. John Elwood
