NMBROOK got a reaction from JLuebbert in MORDAUNT 1681 by NMBROOK - Euromodel - 1:60 - Beyond Bashed
I felt the need to post some pics to celebrate the completion of the gundeck 'treenailing'.The aft section still needs sanding smooth and I will then apply a coat of thinned poly to protect the deck during future work.A rough count up shows well in excess of 3000 fixings Some sanity has been retained thanks to the music of Vangelis and Hans Zimmer
Kind Regards

So I finished perhaps the worst part of standing rigging (at least for me) - crowsfeet. I had to redo it several times before I achieved at least partially satisfactory look - ie. crowsfeet rope stretched as far as possible without "lifting" the stay.

Thanks for the "likes" and comments.
Yes, Iove the pear. Very easy to work with and leaves a crisp edge. And the color is a added treat.
George,
Go back to post 738. I list the woods and where they'll be used. But the short answer is: yes. Swiss Pear for the exterior planking.

First bit of planking is done with Swiss Pear. Just the counter so far. I've hung the stern post and rudder blank for position and to make sure I made the hole right.
There will be a bit of ebony trim over the exposed yellowheart after the rest of the planking goes one. And "above" the counter and below the lights I'll be putting in the shaped trim strip after the rest of the stern has been planked.
All in all, I'm pretty pleased.

update -
Finished the bow gratings & added a few steps so the crew can get up to the main deck . Also found that I had to add a small wedge to the top of the stem because the bowsprit angle was way too low. I may start on the galleries next after determining how I`m going to do them - need to figure out how to get the lower rear tower positioned so it will not interfere with the upper gallery. Seems to be a common problem with the Corel kit.

Fabulous work Kay It is great to see an update on your magnificent model The figurehead is surely on of the most daunting carving jobs around. It is probably one of the most complex figureheads ever designed.

NMBROOK reacted to NAZGÛL in Wasan 1628 by Nazgul - FINISHED - Billing Boats Vasa 1:75
Hey all! I did the anchors yesterday. I planned to scratch them as the kit version was to round in shape and they where the same size. When looking closer I realized they could be reshaped to a better shape and that one could be resized quite easily so that's what I ended up doing. The plastic was easy to work with.
I made the wooden parts out of wood instead of the plastic ones that came with the kit.
The rings are rope with CA to make it hard, with smaller thread looped around it.
When I was working o the rigging the other evening I used a lamp to see the details. When we looked up on the ceiling it gave a pretty cool shadow effect.

NMBROOK reacted to DORIS in ROYAL CAROLINE 1749 by Doris - 1:40 - CARD
Well, dear friends, I have finished tops on the masts ( made of card and wood) and now I am going to continue with rigging on Royal Caroline. I have unfortunately less free time for hobbies ( because I have a new and very responsible job as a sales director in a company selling cosmetics), but I would like to continue and make models for relaxation.

A belated Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you Doris
Fabulous work on your Chebec Doris: It is funny,I have been 'eyeing up' Heller's offering of this vessel in 1/50.It bears a striking resemblance to Le Requin.

I carefully reduced the thickness of the complete grating to just over 1mm using a mini sanding disc in my Proxxon IB/e.The grating was then wetted and clamped to a plywood former with slightly more than the required radius. The Ebony frame was then assembled around the grating using 30min epoxy.
After leaving overnight to dry, everything was sanded back to the required shape and size. The final two pics show the grating slotted in place on the deck.Final gluing will not happened until all 'treenailing' and sanding has been carried out.
A change of direction now as work is going to concentrate on Royal Caroline's guns.
Kind Regards

Part 4
The decoration of the transom was a interesting area. First problem was the framing. I wasn't able to make it from wood.
But the solution was to make it from 2mm soldering wire. In a vice I formed it into a fourcorner.
Some shots after painting the hull. I use distemper coulors. Tar = van Dyck brown decorationareas = english red
rails are black. The frames of the transion and the decoration = leaf gold

Part 2
The Gallion
I think that the wood of a sail ship from the early 18.century was protected by tar. The guys in the International Maritime Museum, Hamburg told me, that this tar was not black but dark brown. And so I take "Van Dyck Brown" for this job, as I have seen the ships in the paintings of Rembrandt and van Dyck.
To cover the wales I scratched an angle trim. That had been a very fiddely job, for the 2*3mm wallnutbeams are very sensible under progress.
The skupperports are from 9mm Ramin. To make these parts was not a difficult job: first drilling the 5mm whole, than cutting into 2,5mm slides, some sanding - ready.

After many years of useing kits as the base for modelling, I started my first scratch model. Therefor I have choosed a smal ship, not a big one like my HMS Agamemnon.
On the Mediterranean took place since the end of the 17th century two particularly fast, lean and sharply built sailing vessels whose hull was probably developed from the galley and the caravel: a native of Venice Galeotte and Xebec. The warships of Geneva and Venice, and also well known as the ships of the northern African pirates.
At the same time Pinco was the typical merchant ship in the Mediterranean. In principle, a Xebec. However, not so fast, lean and sharply built, but with a good load carrying capacity.
Typical of these ships was the double rigging. In good weather latin sails. In bad weather square rigged.
I like this Mediterranean ships, and last but not least at the stern of the Pinco are not so much decorations. I have never before carved such ornaments, but I will do my very best.
I began the build August 15. by the plans from Euro Modell Como.
Before I started the first planking, it was necessary to make the transition in the forecastle completed. After the first planking I do not get off there.
I have made the first planking in a special way. 3mm plywood strips are glued between the bulkheads. The bow and stern sections are filled with balsa. After sanding is the result a strong base for the second planking
Second planking is made from wallnut
After mounting the hatches on maindeck planking was the next step.
I didn't find any information how the scuppers are to be made, and where there position is. And this is my solution: after reinforcing the bulwark at the positions, drilling in the scuppers.

Thank you very much Mark The contemporary model of her has black combings and waterways on the maindeck,I have chosen to follow this, but extend it to the gundeck combings.I am also considering making the bitts and capstans from ebony.
