This week Ive been painting the sculptures that run below the bow. According to Landströms book it portrait the battle between Peleus and Thetis. I thinned the pieces down to make them thinner and sanded them to make them sit tight against the wood. The colors are muted variants of the 1:10 color scheme.
I also thinned down and painted the Vasa shield for the lion.

NMBROOK got a reaction from Richard Griffith in What do you use your mill for ?
I thought I would bump this topic as I have a couple of pics showing an example of what can be done with a miller that would be awkward to do by hand.I made this rather small jig to produce glazing frames for the skylight of a Royal Caroline build(log coming very soon). This jig took literally 10 mins from start to finish. The circular recesses are for glue clearance and the central slot is to provide clearance for tweezers, shown in picture for scale. The boxwood is actually 0.7mm square and the jig enables me to make two at a time. The long sides will be cut after removal from the jig.Tamiya masking tape provides the hitec clamp.

Thank you.
I hope it gives members food for thought who are debating whether to buy a mill. Some members who already possess one may find it helps them get more from their machine and maximize it's potential.

I have fitted the carving.I have used aluminium tube 8mm long to replicate the lead lining that was used in the hawse holes. The bores have been countersunk to remove the corner. On to the other side now

There is normally a small amount of backlash on lathes and milling machines (which gets worse over time as the bronze nut wears) unless it's fitted with ballscrews which are'nt common on hobby machines.

Bob,
I may not be explaining correctly. Let me try again. There are customers on Amazon that are describing their dissatisfaction with the Proxxon Mill. For instance, one wrote "... the z-axis hand wheel had a full 1/4 turn of play". Others mentioned what sounded like similar comments.
If I understand correctly, you are saying that "play" is just the nature of the beast and will be experienced on many different mills?
By the way, I really am enjoying the education. Thank you all.

Build time 30 hours,
having sorted my thread out today, i feel much better about it
another 3 hours on the build this evening, lol - not much to show for it, the PE work takes some getting used to, the folding and keeping the correct shape when attaching
air intake vents in
searchlight gantry fitted,
the upper walkway built and fitted, the other end attaches to the forward structure, and i think it support one of the masts
