This week I was finally able to finish the last major piece of the machinery.  With the paddle wheel clutch mechanism in place I can drop the boiler deck in place.  I will miss all the metalwork but, I'm really looking forward to the woodwork.

Heroine's port throw out lever.  roughly forged from  3/8 inch strap.  The handle is roughly octagonal at the strap and tapers to round.

The pins that engage the bearing are about one inch in diameter with a two inch head.  Inserted through holes in the strap, the protruding ends were then hammered flat.  The pins show a lot of wear from rubbing against the bearing.

    Straps fresh from the mill.

Soldering the handles and pins to the straps.

    Finished throw out parts.

Clutch mechanism installed.  I decided to show the starboard side with the bearing engaged and the port side disengaged.

    On to the boiler deck.

I have temporarily installed the boiler deck on poplar posts in about half of the post holes.  Next week I'll replace them one by one with boxwood posts, aligning and plumbing them as necessary.

Landrotten Highlander reacted to mtaylor in Licorne 1755 by mtaylor - 3/16" scale - French Frigate - from Hahn plans - Version 2.0 - TERMINATED
It's taken longer than I thought to get to this point.  I had a minor issue with wood that had defects unseen from the surface, but that goes with the territory and then also quite a bit going on in "life".   There will be another pause coming up for Janet's surgeries, but for the most part, that will just entail my keeping an eye on things during the recovery process.

The first drop is essentially finished except for some minor touch up (and the carvings...).  I've finessed it to fit the hull and the molding and it just needs a bit of touch up on the sweeping curve from top to bottom before gluing into place.  The other side is finessed into place and just needs the final shaping to get the curve and then any touch up work.

Once these are done, I'll post both sides and a stern shot. I'll need stern shot anyway for my records and to check for uniformity.

I won't be applying any finish for now until the wood has a chance to age and regain some of it's patina.

    Here's the photos...

    Hello,
thanks to everyone for the interest.
Here are the latest fitting parts for the rudder, the thwarts and the eyebolt to see before they are burnished.

The last picture shows the thwart with the already installed holder. The side panels in the bow area, which also form the conclusion of the grating are still missing.

    Hello Everybody,

I didn't get a chance to post last week.  I took a few days off to take the family to the beach before the Memorial day weekend.  We had a great time but returned to Tornadoes and floods in College Station.

Since my last post, I spent three days framing the boiler deck and two days tearing it apart and rebuilding it.  One incorrect measurement threw several of the beams out of location.  I think everything is finally correct and I should be able to drop the deck on the model in the coming week.

    The deck before the rebuild.

After rebuild.  The shifting of the deck beams is difficult to see but, I also found it necessary to extend the overhang of the walkway by a few inches.  The notch in the doubled beam amidships will fit around the two posts supporting the feedwater pump lever.

I've been putting off securing the paddle wheels in place -- it's easier to move the model with the wheels off.  Now that the boiler deck is going on, it's time to assemble the clutch mechanism for the paddle wheels.

Milling the pocket for the shaft end.

    Before and after milling.

The final contour was hand filed.

Test fitting one of the throw-out bearings.

The original throw-out bearing weighed over 300 pounds.  Amazingly, when we reassembled the the original pieces, the heavy bearing slid easily and smoothly along the shaft end with only the moderate pressure of one finger on each side.

The guns in place. Side Tackles are yet to be fitted - I'm waiting on some of Chuck's 0.3mm line which has kindly been given to me by Grant Dale (Thanks mate ):

    Hi all,

I've had some Internet issues lately, and haven't been able to post much of anything. It's all resolved now though, so I have a lot of catch-up to do. Where to start ?

I'd previously made the Main Topsail Sheet Bitts and the Main Jeer Bitts, so these could now be fitted along with the Eyebolts around the main mast and those for the Gun Tackles in the spirketting.

Next job was to make the Chain Pump mechanisms, starting with the Cranks. These were all silver soldered and blackened. I left the joints in the aft ends of the cranks to be epoxied in after the rest was assembled :

Next I made and fitted the Cisterns. A more detailed description of how these were assembled can be found in my Log of the full Vulture model :

The Rhodings for both bitts came next. I filed these from brass sheet. The "bolts" were easier to fit in longer lengths, which were later cut down and blackened after the epoxy had dried :

The pumps completed. You will notice that the pics are a bit out of sequence - I hadn't taken many pictures during construction and had to go back and take them after I'd fitted a few other things :

    Continued in next post .......

Have received my Silkspan and will experiment. Can you use a laser printer to print on Silkspan?

Here are some pics of the typical mediaeval arrangement of huge wedges for the mainmast at the partners and the reinforcing wooldings. There were many variations on this . I do not exaggerate the size of the wedges:

I need to go away and make some mediaeval blocks.
    Cheers

    Gerhard, Carl and Giampiero,
about your interest I am very pleased.
Thank you for that, and also for the many LIKES.

The grating on the floor of the aft cockpit was a special
    Challenge.
I think you can see from the plan, what I mean.

Full optimally has not succeeded. Next time, maybe.
