Landrotten Highlander got a reaction from Piet in Surabaya by Piet - 1/80 - Mid 17th-Century VOC ship
    Hi Piet,
regarding blackining your hooks, see this topic

    http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/topic/1240-another-type-of-blackening-agent-and-some-experiments/?hl=%2Bblackening+%2Bbrass+%2Bglass

In this method glass-staining is used to blacken soldered brass wire already attached to blocks (the whole thing is submerged in the blackening agent).  Only the metal is blackened, the block remains unchanged.

    Perhaps an option?

I have finally fitted the remaining glazing bars in the lower stern windows(yes another five to go above these and numerous ones on the deck bulkheads )

The three on the right are complete, the two on the left have had the bars sanded flat and awaiting another coat of matt poly.

I have now moved on to fitting the balcony floor.Three copper pins were bonded into the edge of the floor and correspond to holes drilled in the transom. The softwood former underneath is temporary,it is purely there to hold the correct camber as I had a small amount of springback when the floor was released from it's jig.The floor has been epoxied to the transom and lower edge of the planking. The protuding sides will be trimmed and sanded flush when the epoxy has cured. This will also release the softwood former which is held with blobs of epoxy at each end.

I am looking forward to the next stage,I had a lightbulb moment this week.I have worked out how to produce decorative paneling in boxwood with an ebony architrave detail. It is based on DrMike's technique for creating these panels, but with my own twist. All will be revealed in due course

    Kind Regards

One mini project I have been working on in conjunction with everything else,is what will be the floor of the balcony.I mentioned earlier that this was a grated deck, but I wanted something a little more visually appealing.
I have prebent a piece of 1.5mm Ebony on a jig and this was secured at the ends with some scrap boxwood and cyano.I have then tiled the upper surface with 4mm square boxwood and ebony.I haven't photographed the manufacturing techniques for this as it is covered in many other logs.A propose to apply a few light coats of Poly prior to removal and shaping.

    Kind Regards

    Step 6

    The lower deck is complete.

    Step 7

The main upper deck is also in two parts. The planks are defined by laser etching. Too avoid any problems with the planks separating, I glued some paper on the reverse side.

To provide extra support, I also added some small blocks to the bulkheads.

    (this is before final shaping)

    Step 8

There are 3 pieces (1 aft, 2 forward) to complete the deck.

Now comes the tricky part, the hull planking. The are only 4 planks but they will require some bending. Clare suggests soaking since the cypress can be brittle when dry. I'll probably leave this until the weekend.

    Hello,

the great cabin is ready! That was a lot of interesting work.

The next thing to install are the knees, but first without the beams.

And if anyone knows more about the storing of the gunnery equipment, your knowledge is welcome. For more details please see my last posting.

    Regards,
    Siggi

Thank you all for your kind words and likes.

Work is progressing and more knees, hanging knees, carlings and ledges are added.

I also forgot to install a pillar in front of the fore mast , but that was taken care of.

The last opportunity to take a look at the sail room before its permanently installed in the hull

Some of the knees with mortices cut

The state of the upper deck to date

The next weeks will be more of the same... with the addition of installing hammock battens as I work my way across the deck

    Mark,

She sure is looking good. Welcome to the wild, wonderful, whacky, world of French ship construction  Looks like you have it totally under control.

[ed] I certainly agree la Vénus is a completely different animal. Licorne was the only ship of this type designed by Geffroy (père) so she could be considered a one-off with detail differences from the standard. Since you have the book, I'm sure you know that a lot of the fiddly bits are closer in similarity to la Renommée. You are doing a wonderful job, and helping the rest of us with your take on the "speed bumps". They are invaluable.

Just remember, French ships are sensitive creatures and must be spoken to occasionally in French. So when/if you hit a bump in the road, just shout "Zut alors! Zut alors! Zut alors!"

    Hi,
as previously announced here are the pictures from the removal of the boat shell.
Before removing the shell I've sanded the hull.
    Sanding I was doing outdoors.

With great excitement and nervousness I loosened the screws.

I am satisfied with the result.

    .... continued

To make the swivel brackets I flattened some 1.2mm wire. This would have been easier with 1.6mm x 0.8mm brass strip, but I didn't have any. To get some meant a 2 hour drive, and I flattened the wire in a couple of minutes :

Next I drilled 0.85mm holes 9mm apart and cut the pieces to length. The ends were rounded :

I partially bent the strap using needlenose pliers :

A piece of 1.0mm wire was soldered to the strap and then the unit was fitted to the trunions. This was not as difficult as I'd feared. The guns can pivot up and down as the straps aren't soldered to the barrels :

Finally the guns were blackened :
