Hey Dave,  no way would I be painting over that planking job either. It looks fantastic! Love the way you alternated the different colours of the wood. They contrast so well against the stark black wales.. You are working very fast on her too.

Hi all, have done and placed the doors in the upper cabin structure. Decided to go with the same color curtains as the lower deck. Still need to do the shutters for each doorway now. Currently the structure is just sitting there.

Have also planked (bar the outer edge) the next deck level. Again this is just sitting on top. No glue.

if you have a look at david's build log of the same boat (drobinson02199) you will find he had the same spiral staircase problem. he describes how he overcame it in there. seems to me you are at the stage whereby you haven't gone too far as to make fixing it an insurmountable problem. either way, looks like the jury has spoken and we all want to see a spiral staircase! lol

That's very clever to use the old fret as a bending form. Its for this reason I never throw any offcuts etc. out. Also really like the herringbone deck. If I ever do this model I may go down that route if you don't mind?

thanks John for the thought........I know that your likely joking,  but I don't think of it like that.  I value everyone's suggestions and comments......after all,  we've all come together within these hallowed halls for one reason....our love for the medium.   we all share the same desire.......to create models as accurately as possible,  whether it be scratch or kit.   this is the only site I've belong to so far,  where criticism really hasn't flourished....everyone conveys more of a constructive criticism,  than anything else.   for all you new comers out there......don't be daunted from doing logs on your projects here......your denying yourselves of an excellent learning opportunity.  the beauty of this site,  is that we all want you to succeed.......we all want to perpetuate the medium...we all want you to grow along with us
I was here a short time before I came out with the M&M project...it was a 'what if'....a fantasy build.   in the beginning,  the ribbing and jokes I got from it was pretty intense......I almost shut down the log.   but one voice suggested I continue,  so I did.  I'm sure he knows who I'm talking about {if he remembers}..before long,  as I got into it more,  it all stopped when folks saw how neat it looked.  I learned something too...no one was being rude or cruel.....it was merely a lighthearted approach to something they've never seen before.  it's too bad that the log was lost in the big crash......if I could remember everything,  I'd put it back up.  for my first attempt at some real scratch building,  it was some pretty nifty stuff  if I do say so myself.
so.....no,  no firing squad........just my friends who care and want to see my full potential.  I'm glad your a friend as well.....no one can have too many    thanks to all of you who won't let me take the easy way out!   when I first started here.......I could count those I considered mentors on one hand.   now......forget it.....i've lost count

I've finished the second planking and given it a first coat of varnish, which is still drying in the pics below.  A few comments:
There's no way I'm going to paint this hull -- I love natural wood and this wood is particularly beautiful, as I've seen in other Fly build logs. The bow view shows how I sorted out the bow planking -- and thanks to a number of you who provided suggestions and comments on this. You may see some varnish drip on the stern counter -- I will deal with that in later varnish coats. One thing that may not show is something I discovered while sanding.  I used an Amati plank bender -- the kind that uses a blade to crimp lateral compressions into the back of a plank.  What happened in two small areas of the bow is that while sanding, the edges of those compressions came through.  The blade must not put an even cut into the back of the plank.  It's not a big deal -- could almost pass for coloration in the wood -- and won't be that noticeable.  It for sure isn't correctable.

In the future on the second planking, I'll use steam only -- which was very effective and could have been used to accomplish everything I did with the plank bender.

Oh, well -- live and learn.

    Regards,
    David

Hi Dave, the planking on the Revenge looks super! However I detect a bit of fixing required to the forward gunport hatch. Anyway, I don't know if you are on facebook or not, but I follow the Amati page on there and on it they have a really good build log of the HMS Fly (same Amati version as yours), if you are interested.

Hey Chuck, thanks very much for your reply. Actually I am building the Amati Bounty 1:60. I am a long way off placing and rigging the cannons but it comes with pretty average metal ones which I really want to replace when the time comes.

    Second Planking
The second layer of planks is walnut, slightly thinner than the first layer. I love walnut - it's my favorite wood. I started planking at the main wale as shown on the plans, and worked up to the bulwar... Arrgh! There were no bulwarks!

This was when I came back to MSW and started paying serious attention to the other build logs. I had misinterpreted my plans but could see immediately what the bulwarks were supposed to look like from other builders' logs. THANK YOU ALL!

So I built temporary bulkhead extensions, put on a first layer of planking, then the second walnut layer. I worked down from the main wale until the curvature became compound and the planks just wouldn't bend that way any more.

Then I worked up from the keel. I worked upwards until the bottom planks hit the top planks at the bow, but there was still a gap amidships. So I put in some stealer planks as needed. Not correct, but the result looks good.

The Caldercraft parts are cut with numerically controlled machining and seem quite precise, but I have already run into several situations where the parts just don't fit.  Now the keel was not nearly deep enough and barely showed below the planking. I had to build it up an additional 6 mm or so to make it look right.

I sanded for ages (again), filled all the gaps with Timber-Mate's walnut colored wood filler, and sanded some more. I stained everything with Watco walnut penetrating oil stain. I love that stuff. I also added the wales and painted them black. I have no plans to show scale planks or tree nails.

So I finally corrected all my stupid mistakes and am proud to show the results. The walnut planking couldn't be prettier. I know that there are a million fiddly pieces to go on this model, but it's all stuff I've done before and can do again.

Here I have started to plank the decks. The Tanganyika strips supplied with the kit are very rough and require a lot of sanding, but they finish up beautifully with linseed oil. I am currently about a week beyond this and will try to get some photos up soon.

This is my edge bending setup for the second layer.  I got this from a video that I found somewhere in MSW, that was done by an expert modeler at one of the MSW shows.  He used a hair dryer only -- I use steam and then a hair dryer.
Plank clamped on my worktable with the center clamp imparting a bend (it's just up against the side of the plank -- not gripping it).  This pic also shows my steamer and hair dryer.  The routine is clamp, steam, increase the bend once the wood is wet, steam again, then hair dryer for 30 seconds per section. Close up of bend. The plank after two bending passes. The plank on the boat before gluing -- note that it bends away from the planks above it. The plank now glued.  Note that it's flat to the hull, with not very much edge showing on the plank above -- easily sanded. I also find that the steamer really works well on this walnut to soften it for bending.  See the stern bend here, which is a 90 degree twist.  The steamer only takes 5-10 seconds to soften the wood.

    Regards,
    David
