    The starboard main deck gun battery completed. Putting this much detail is very time consuming. I have completed several ships with complex rigging, which is my favorite part, but rigging these guns is tougher. The close quarters and short lengths is a real challenge. I still have to do the port side.  The quaterdeck and forecastle guns are even smaller.

    Love that pic. Do you know the name of that painting...artist? Where can I get a large scale image of it. Would make a great background pic!

    To All;
    I know this topic is a few years old, but what a great exchange of information! Thank you to ChrisLBren for starting it and maintaining the decorum that one should always expect at MSW!

    The cap rails on top of the bulwarks that run the length of the entire ship except the poop deck are completed. This was a tedious task since they are made from scratch with many little pieces. All of the parts including the little vertical support posts, the railings, and the bits on the forcastle are made from 4mm x 1mm walnut stock. The only exception are the railings that have the sharp curves at the ends. In order to make the bending easier, I used 2 strips of 4mm x 0.5mm walnut and laminated them on top of each other after bending, to form the 1mm thickness.

    Now I will start at the bow and work on all of the deck fixtures and structures from stem to stern. This part of the build will take a long time.

    Finished placing the trennels. There were over 2000.

    Next up will be to work on the forecastle railings and catheads.

    Hi Keith,
    I still have much work to do on the decks, like the railings, fixtures, stairways and such. That all will take some time to complete. I am starting now with the forecastle railings and catheads.

    Now that the bow is mostly finished I decided to finish placing the trennels all along the unpainted portions of the hull. This will take a while since there are hundreds of them. Like before, I am using round toothpicks.

    The bobstays are now done. While a little fiddly, they were far easier than I expected. The first photo shows bulldog clips on the lashings to provide some tension. I left them over the weekend, then made any adjustments necessary to make them taught. Tying off the lashings was a bit awkward, but I have found wetting the thread here (and elsewhere) makes it far easier to handle.

    Here they are, complete.

    Meanwhile the ratline saga continues while I look for any excuse to avoid them. The port side is now done, those for the main and mizzen masts on the starboard side are yet to do.

    Dave:
    I think you're on the right track with regard to the "mooring chock". I'm at the point of laying the 3rd & 4th deck planks on the quarter deck. I know to cut the planks approx. 12'', lay it along side the 1st planks & mark it where the 1st plank ends. At that point I cut a notch just deep enough for the 1st plank to nestle in. Where I'm confused is how far forward from that notch do I taper planks 3 & 4? Also do I taper the outside edge of planks 3 & 4? If so where do I taper them?

    I checked the location of the kit provided cast metal chocks & the aft pair appear to be surface mounted on the aft most monkey rail. The forward pair are surface mounted on the forward buffalo rail. This still leaves unanswered what are the "mooring chocks" in the aft bulwarks for. I have the book "Bluenose II Saga of the Great Fishing Schooner" by L. B. Jenson. On page 101 it shows the aft mooring line being tied off on the quarter bitt that is midway between the "mooring chock" in the upper bulwark & steering box on plan sheet #3. Maybe this is the explanation for the "mooring chocks" on the plans.

    J,

    For those planks, after I cut in the notch to fit around planks 1 & 2, I tapered that inside edge (that will sit against plank 1 or 2) from the notch back towards the other end, about 6 inches.  Then I tapered the outside edge on the short part past the notch, just enough to get the tip narrowed down to my liking.  I didn't want to taper the entire plank, then cut the notch, because I was afraid that I'd end up with too little material around the notch.
