Thanks Lawrence and Thomas and for all the likes.

Well I've been busy, busy busy…  Lower, topsail and topgallant yards are all rigged.  I find rigging, as I mentioned before, to be a task I enjoy doing so once I start it’s hard to stop.  The yards were rigged following Chuck’s directions and so far no problems.

Well no real problems just one little glitch happened when I went to rig the starboard side topsail buntline which is supposed to be run through a block hanging from the aft most cross tree.  When I went to run it though low and behold there was already a line in there.  What had happened was when I rigged the topsail yard jeer which is run through the block below the cross tree right in front of the buntline’s block the holes in the two blocks must have lined up perfectly and I failed to notice that the jeer line went through both blocks. After a few WTF's and some deconstruction everything was put in order.

Parrel added to the top sail yards

Lower yards rigged and topsail yards added

Braces rigged and topgallant yards added.

As a side note, the more lines I add I start to understand why lions have a hard time hunting zebras.  Looking through all these black and white lines it’s hard to tell which is in front of which.

    Ken,

One can't have too many tutorials or detailed procedures with a screw up or two...  The tutorials teach and we builders learn from our screwups which all tell others not to do it that way.

Seeing Kurt's shameless plug ( ) reminds me.. I really need to order your book. My metal skills stink.

    Ken:
Your posts are always appreciated and educational.  I have learned a few things reading your build log -and learned a lot of stuff from your book.  One has to remember that there are always people who need to know some of the things than so many assume everybody knows because they learned the skill so long ago.  There are always new modelers coming along who will benefit from tutorials of all sorts.  You are providing information for all skill levels - I know for a fact that some very experienced guys do their chafing fish and mast cheeks just like the instructions show, relying on wood filler rather than fitting the faces of the strips together tightly.

As I have said before, you  have a skill for explaining  the processes of building and are a great teacher.  That's one of the reasons I asked you to be a speaker at the San Diego NRG Conference in October.  Anybody wanting to learn first hand from Ken about working with brass come to San Diego.  If you have Ken's book bring it with and I am sure he will autograph it for you (mine will make the trip) and I am sure he will bring some to sell there.  This paragraph is a blatant plug for Ken, his book and the NRG Conference.

    Take care,
    Kurt

    Mark,
Thanks for the compliment! I posted on page12 posted a link to military stars for medals a couple may work; but I have been busy with other things. I can always add the stars down the road if I cannot find another option.

Sometimes I wonder if I am doing too many of the tutorials; but being new to ship building with no"sacred cows" my stumbling's may benefit others like myself learning the ropes.

Thank you for your response. I guess I'll have to get some "ink & stain" and just practice...practice & practice some more. I don't hope to get anywhere close to your results but maybe I can get a little close. Can you at least tell me what brand of "ink & stain" you used that way I can use the same things you used. Again keep up the great work it is such an inspiration.

    best regards

You are doing a FANTASTIC job! I have printed out your tutorial on painting ornaments/cast metal parts. I am particularly impressed with your painting/staining method that "ages" your wood. Did you ever do a tutorial on that process? Keep up your great work.

The paints I use are Citadel (Warhammer miniature paints) and they are water acrylic based. This makes it easy to work with as opposed to Humbrol-like paints. Contrary to popular belief, these modern acrylic paints hold perfectly fine on metal also.

They have a range of "inks" or "washes/shades/glazes". The names are all esoteric/fantasy. But basically Nuln Oil = just black ink. Calthan Camouflage = Green etc...

Amazing work Chris.  One of the things that I think detracts from models is the contrast between finished wood and painted areas (especially, where photo etched or cast metal parts are used).  You did a really great job tying all those areas together.

Can I ask what you use for the white areas?  I find that most white paints are still too bright, and I would like to find a way to dull it either with a wash or something similar.  I've toyed with the idea of using a light diluted stain, and other options would be to try an off-white paint like ivory or cream.

Here is something to consider: the Wood Supplement Packages originally from HobbyMill. If you are following the Robert Hunt Constitution practicum like I will when I start my model of the Conny, he talks about making certain wood changes on the deck: Hatch Combings, Main Rail, Fife Rails, Fenders, Binnacles, and Life Boats. At the time I bought my kit, HobbyMills was still operating (that role has since been taken over by Crown Timberyard) and I could and did purchase all of the supplements for a total of $85. Whether or not Crown Timberyard also offers these packages, I don't know. It might be worth looking into. If you are interested, I could send you the original HobbyMills description which indicates where in the practicum the substitutions are to be made, what they are, and the pricing.

Hey J, thanks !  I have not done a tutorial on aging the wood. I simply used inks/stains to tone them. Nothing else was done afterwards.
I must add that it is extremely difficult to get a consistent finish, especially on a large ship. So caution is advised if you want a cohesive look.

    J,

Checked it last night and it was 6/0 surgical thread.  I have had it for years but think it came from a surgical supply company.  If I remember correctly I think they refused to sell to me if I was not a doctor.  In my old business life 90% of my work was with doctors so I could always get them to order for me rather than lie about my medical affiliation.  Let me know if you can't find it and I will search back for my source and make arrangements to get us some more.  That may be one of those items that can be obtained from the fly tying suppliers too.
