amateur reacted to ccoyle in Grumman F6F-3 Hellcat by ccoyle - FINISHED - GPM - 1/33 - CARD
I got around to starting the landing gear. First, a photo of the gear doors. The left one is finished; the right one is still in its "frame."
So, the main difficulty in building these stems from the fact that the doors are not flat -- each has a pronounced curve that goes around its strut. The way the kit tackles this is to start with a two-sided "frame" from which the central portion is removed. Then six curved panels are added, three interior and three exterior. Finally, the finished doors are cut loose from their frames. I'm satisfied with the results.
Cheers!

Make a copy, and try before you cut the real thing?

Reminds me….
Hope you have a more elegant solution.

Not only the printing is clever. The glueing trick also deserves to be remembered

Moved back to the 'pointy end' this evening and added an anchor, chain and davit. None of them made from card! 😲 Wire, brass sheet and the smallest chain I have, though still too over scale really. Thread is elastic "Esi-line" I use for rigging model biplanes etc. Also good for ships antenna wires.

Sometimes I wonder why there are not more model kits of these type of ships. They are so beautiful. Apparently kit makers (and buyers) prefer another victory over a cruiser like this.
(I know, there is quite a lot out there in the plastic/resin-world, but that is way outside my skillset, as is scratch building one of these beauties)

This is what the model looks like after installing the davits.

Somewhere in Edt's log of young america there is a jig for that last method. Couldn't find it, but also works very well.
