Cabbie reacted to hornet in HM Cutter Mermaid 1817 by Cabbie - Modellers Shipyard - Scale 1:48
Hi Cabbie.
It's been a while since I finished my Mermaid so I went back and had a look at the video on the ship's construction that I bought from Modeller's Shipyard to remind me what I did with this problem. In the video the deck is faired back to the transom. I took a photo of my tv screen on pause at this point in the video. See it below. Hope this helps.

I seem to recall I went the other way and shaved my deck area down to suit the transom, left the "curl" as is. You don't need a 100% fit up to the transom as the boat davits, gunwales and subsequent planking (both inboard and outboard) will cover any minor problems around the stern. As for the stem, stern, keel etc. I dumped the all the ply versions as they looked pretty bad ( can't disguise the ply) and cut my own from solid walnut. If you want to pop over (it's only about 180 km) I could show you all the modifications etc. that I made.

Thanks Hof
But if you are watching, you have to help.
A couple of questions for the brains trust, I have been fairing which was easy enough to do,
except for the bit, up to each side of the transom.
It seems to be a lot to take off, or should I glue some strips on to make the transom wider.
And how should the bottom of the transom be finished? with the curl as now, or straight across,
or as the plans have it, with a rounded bottom.
A few pics to show

Hi folks,
Just a very quick update because even though it is minor, it's the kind of thing that would dawn on me after I planked if I hadn't paid attention to the manual (and Don's Trabacollo example). You have to mark off 1.8 mm (ish) from the top of each bulkhead top surface to delineate the top surface of the first of two 4 mm hull planks to be laid. This forms the bottom surface for the scuppers and will be flush with the deck surface.

Chris,
Not much "paying" work at the moment, time for fun things.
Some late nights on this stuff though, I get so involved, time slips by.
It also helps I have an extensive sailing, yachting and CAD background.
Compared to others. I believe I take my time.

Ships Boats by the Shipyard
Some more progress.
The Pinnace will be another clinker hull built on frames similar to the Longboat.
The fit-out from the AoTS.
Pinnace Episode 1:
I used DELFTship to develop a hull model for the pinnace, based on the lines from the AoTS p132.
This process involves scanning to AoTS diagrams, loading bitmap pictures(scaled) into the program, then overlay a manipulated wireframe.
The program provides a plot of the hull design that can be used to make patterns.
For the Longboat I hand cut all frames and keel from 0.6mm ply and using a scaple blade. Very time consuming and not 100% accurate. See my previous log on this.
For this boat I wanted to create a set of patterns and then Laser cut them on the 0.6mm 3 ply.
I exported the hull plot as a DXF to load into TurboCAD to further develop a pattern set(frames and keels) for "laser" cutting.
Being the first time, it took a lot of time to develop the patterns to a stage for laser testing.
I am fortunate to have a local source who has a laser cutter.
After some trial runs, this is the end product of the laser cut frames and keel elements.
Next the assembly of the elements to form a hull frame/shape.
This has been a big learning curve, and I must thank Pat(Banyan) for his advice and thoughts.
I plan to do the other 2 boats(Yawl and Skiff) in a similar manner, applying some upgrades to the laser pattern design from what has been learn't through this process.
Ya gotta have fun to do this..... crazy....

Some more progress.
Longboat Episode 4:
The lads in the yard did some work on the internals.
Added the footwaling, windlass, stern bench and knees.
Loose fit the thwarts, a bit too high but too late to change now.
Having a break for now on this one to move ontot he other 3 boat hulls.
Plan is to get all the hull basics similar and fininsh off the "little things" in one go.
Rudder, masts, oars etc.

Hi Chris,
Too kind, more a dabbler of many things, master of none more likely.
Very fiddly work at such a small size, mostly under a magnifier.
I've found that I need to take a break after a couple of hours, as my eyes play up.
Slow and steady like a turtle, that's me.

DELFTship Longboat model
I found that some members use DELFTship to model ship hulls.
I downloaded the free version and after I worked out how to and got the hang of the software, I created a hull shape of the longboat from the Endeavour AoTS pictures.
Side view of the wire frame overlaid to the longboat hull shape.
Perspective view. Basic hull wire frame which can output the frames/stations as in the picture below.
Lines Plan output from DELFTship.
I plan to use the other ship boat plans(in the AoTS) to develop other hull/frames.
Probably dxf the DELFTship model out to TurboCAD(which I have bought) to develop a set of individual frames.
See how that goes.
Fun.

Hey Don, I've been away from MSW for a while, but logged on this morning to catch up with your build and had a nice treat in seeing your build and ship's wheel. I plan to order three from you in the future if you don't mind for my current builds
Really nice work!

Hello all, Thanks for stopping in for a look, for all the likes and the awesome comments. Today(yesterday now) I took a day off building the Trabaccolo(sort of) and took some time to use a few of the tools I had to have but some have never used. So I built a ships wheel, yes I know the Trabaccolo has a tiller but she was a ship of trade and on one of her journeys she picked this one up, hope you enjoy:\
First up is the handles, actually this wasn't the first up but at the time when I started I did not think I would be showing any of this. So this is 3 mm walnut dowel, from MarisStella, the knob part is 6mm long for a total length from end to end of 12 mm and just turned on my rotary tool. I used some rifler files to do the shaping.
These next couple of pictures are showing the handles in place, this is where I missed taking pictures. I started with a dowel, trued it up on the lathe then mounted the chuck on the rotary table(also mounted to a tilting table) that is attached to the mill. I drilled the 8 edge holes at 1.5 mm using a end mill bit, then laid the table assembly to the horizontal position. I made the centre hole using a 3 mm end mill bit then moved it over to within 2mm of the outside edge and cut a 3 mm wide groove(rabbit).
As you can see the wood was really breaking apart, this was just a piece of an old broom handle, so everything got a coat of thin ca. After glue was dry it was put back on lathe and separated(again no pictures) using the parting tool. Doing it this way solves the problem of getting the hub centred as it is still one piece
These next two pictures are just turning down some brass for the centre hub (not rocket science but first time for me ) the piece is about .5 mm thick and 8mm in diameter, I think it could have been a little smaller but I was trying to cover up the wooden hub.
And here is the result of my "fun day", it measures 31.5 mm from knob end to knob end. Still needs a light sanding and some wipe on poly, it should look real good in the cargo hold as it only has eight handles instead of the proper ten .
The next "fun day" may see a stand and drum for it

A little modelling to update.
After separating all the pieces and doing a dry fit, only one bulkhead needed a shim to
bring it up to the right height, then I made a build board to hold and glued it all together.
But one thing that is going to be hard to handle is the planking timber.
The 1st planking is limewood, which I have never seen before, and is very
hard and 2.2mm thick. it is meant to 2mm.
The second planking is mahogany .35 to .4mms thick and meant to be .5.
Modellers shipyard told me that the 2nd planking was mahogany, before I Bought it, but their
picture advertised shows a browner timber. Which I like the look of better.
(PS no complaints from me about it)
Yes, I know that I am meant to be keeping this build simple, but
I am going to thin down the lime wood to 1.5mm thick, which will still be hard work to use.
Then I am going to cut my own 2nd planking from some Kauri that I have, of which
I like the color much better. it will be .8mm thick. That will allow me to cut wider planks for
spiling if need be.
The mahogany that is left I am going to put on the deck, and the rudder.
Anyway that is the plan, we will see what happens
Cheers Chris

So - if you're going to "fiddle" then you'll need to make your own mast rings. I seem to remember that these were not included in the kit - one of the sketches I gave you will show how many you need.
