I agree, flag halyard.
On the Harriet, tied off at the boom as in your Gunboat
and in use.
However, the flag would have to come down and go back up each time you tacked. On the Gunboat, if they took it to above the mainsheet that could be avoided.

Cabbie reacted to OT1138 in Swift by OT1138 - Artesania Latina - 1982 kit
The cabins were a lot of work, mainly due to having to make the hatches and doors twice to get things to fit right. The kit provided parts were nowhere near the right size and the rails for the sliding hatch were not pre-cut, so this took a lot of work as well. The air/smoke/ventilation pipes were made from old lead and required brittle flashing to be sanded off. Finally, I found some 7mm brass portholes on eBay, so added two on each side.
I found it interesting that the plan indicates that doors were only about 3' tall.

Thanks Craig for all of your help I was thinking the same
myself about the breadth of the boats and thinking that meant whale boats.

Sorry about that sir, from now on you can call yourself Craig,
The cutters are meant to be whaleboats as per this which is taken from
"Mitchell Library, State Library of New South Wales
Phillip Parker King letter book relating to survey voyages around New South Wales, 1817-1823
MLMSS 4429"
"In addition to these Boongaree a native having volunteered to go with me I have with the Governors permission accepted his services, he formerly was with Captn Flinders
I have 2 Whale Boats, a Jolly Boat
and
[Page 15]
and a Whale Boat in frame, in case any accident should happen to the Vessel"
Sorry for one more question i just don't know enough, but one must strike whilst the iron is hot.
Do those measurements look to be for one type of boat or the other?
Thanks Chris

Inspired guess here.
Block/wedge under the keel, then ropes from the eyebolts in the gunwales that would secure the cannon/carronades, over the hull and across to eyebolts along or near to the centreline. These latter should be there anyway to pull the cannon inboard.

Thanks Rick he had the 3 full boats and frames for another whaleboat stored below.
It is in his letter book relating to the voyages.

It appears i have a little bit of freedom in regards to the whale boats,
just have to work out how to hold them to the deck. The jolly boat will be shortened from what i have now
back to 12 ft.
But I think madness has set in, thinking I am going to make them, but a challenge has been issued and must be honored.
Thanks Roger PP King use the Mermaid for survey voyages around Australia, i don't
know why he the boats that he had, perhaps it what was on the Mermaid when it was bought.
Thanks Chris

What do you think, should the jolly boat be shorter? And the breadth of the whaleboats narrower?
I have seen other sites say a whaleboat is generally 28 ft long 6ft wide.
Also they must in a cradle of sorts to sit on the deck?
Going by ratios from that last drawing to model it looks like my whaleboats could be a bit longer.
Sorry for all the questions Cheers Chris

Hello to all
Some help needed please on the deck and ship boats positioning for my Mermaid
PP King said in his journal that he had 2 whaleboats and a Jolly boat, i have done some cardboard shapes to represent the boats.
Where would the Whaleboats be placed, supported on the deck close to where I have them and would the Jolly boat
be hung off Davits at the stern?
And how about the size of the boats that i have, look about right?
All advice greatly appreciated. Thanks Chris

Chris, what I think is mostly guesses, same as everybody else.
Based on the painting, I wouldn't go over 12' for the Jolly boat and I wouldn't be surprised if it was actually 10' but in CAD I get about 10' 10".
Cradle of some sorts certainly but perhaps wedges. Those boats must have been securely lashed down. Hard to do on a flat surface without crushing them.
The last drawing is supposedly to scale, measuring the whaleboat in CAD I get 20' 6" but there must be a margin for error.

Hello Jii Welcome to MSW
Yes it can be a tricky business, model ship building, but very enjoyable.
Whilst looking at kits look here https://thenrg.org/half-hull-planking-kit.php
A lot of beginners get stuck with the fairing and planking, and learn the correct technique first up.
It comes with a very detailed set of instructions.
I am on to my 3rd model so far and as yet have not done one in the correct traditional method.
I have ordered one and will arrive soon I hope, and will do before I start the ship boats for my Mermaid.
And maybe get yourself a little fun build to do as well.

Started on the deck today, easy compared to the hull planking I'm doing trenails on my planks but I'm not sure if I will fill them in with anything or not.... I built a jig so I could cut 75 mm planks, and I'm using a 5-pattern. For the caulking, I'm using a sharpie (oil-based "paint pen" version). Will post again when it's finished, and my hull is a bit smoother...

Finished off the first layer of hull planking. The last planks weere tough! I put a small amount of filler on, and I'm going to sand down the hull tomorrow. Im pretty happy with how the hull turned out, there were no gaps and it is (mostly) symmetrical. I'm excited for a different task 😁
@Cabbie thanks for the tips, I had better luck with the other planks!

There is a lot of modelling and general info in those books.
I will keep an eye out for them as well.

Yes Allan is a bit like that if i read a novel it has to grab me and keep going, and not fill it in with too
much ordinary stuff. I will check out the other 2, I don't mind a bit of reading to break up the modelling if my brain is
not up to concentrating. Though something else is arriving tomorrow, a new laptop computer that would be very nice
for 3d ship modelling, but is definitely for work that i need to get on with.

Hello Jeff, looks like you are having the usual first time planking problems. They are twisting out because you
are forcing them to lay how they don't want to. Have a look at the articles database at the top of the page, there is a number of tutorials
on plank laying and bending. The first layer probably doesn't matter so much a lot of beginners push through it, fill and learn.
Read the pdf's before doing the 2nd layer.
If you think the bulkhead is low you can glue a thin strip of wood to it to pack it out.
A lot of these kits don't necessarily give you the means to to a proper job of planking.
Keep going and push through it.
