  1. When I got this stage with the two "locker" my first thought was the heads. As they are as close as you can get to the front which is where they are on the Victory. Also didn't the clippers occasionally carry passengers? Who, especially in mid Victorian period, if they were ladies on board the sight of some burly jack with his trousers round his feet would have done more than caused a few shocked faces. So privacy would be vital. And as the years went by and real facilities were added the old ones would have been sealed of and so left with a fairly useless little locker. Just another perspective. Also on the subject of chains. I'm doing the airfix version which has the holes in the side of the ship and the ports/funnels on deck but no mention of chain at all. So unless any prospective modeller is going to guess and plan a long way ahead there would be no chains to hold the anchors on. As it is I've got to drill the deck to allow the chain through behind the "pig pens" don't know yet how I'm going to get the chain across from the hole to the side of the ship. But it could be interesting. Anybody know where I can find some well trained and very strong ants willing to work for nothing...
  2. Try devising the first cm by ten? Or more to the point try measuring the first mm compared to the rest?
  3. Well here we are me hearties, The weekend and another weekend teaser. Having a few problems locating my steel rule I decided to splash out a whole £1. And buy a new one. After all what can go wrong with a steel rule. A piece of metal with two straight edges and some numbers along the edges‽ See if you can guess what went wrong... While it's not the end of the world it does tend to beg the question when is a ruler not a ruler?
  4. Update on the end of the missing tail. It was an over early termination. Of the story. While I liked the curly strands they were a little over thick. They were all I had from some micro mesh. But as luck would have if lady fate has come to Nannies rescue as I've found an old USB cable. With 5 thou wires so as soon as I can untangle them enough Meg will be loosing an all new tail. And I've finally got my camera back from my daughter so I can even post in focus images of Nannie in her Cutty Sark as before and afters. Till then calm sea and gentle winds to all. And an extra tot of rum for all hands...
  5. Hi, Ideas are never silly only miss timed. As they will work somewhere just not in every occasion when you first think of them
  6. I understand what you are getting at. And thanks for the promis to follow. And I realise the choice is mine in the end. But getting second opinions is what this forums about. Being able to get other less biased views. I may do as Dafi has with his own armada of Victories. And complete this one then having made all the mistakes first time around. I can try and make another set of different mistakes second time.. So thanks for the opinion. And as an open minded answer I feel you are right about not abandoning ship just because of a few loose screws in the crew .
  7. Advice please. I'm making this model but there are several mistakes and mould issues I have with it. Now I've started it I'm really getting engrossed. But these faults are bugging me. I've got chance of a second version. Would anyone have any comments about dry docking this version and using it for spares. And starting over again on the second model. Basically learning from my mistakes? Be brutal but be honest. So ist or is it Thanks PS. Nannie will be jumping ship as well
  8. Pieces of eight, and Polly wanna want a cracker. Hello my hearty sea dogs. I'm looking for some help in sourcing a small supply of board to make a range of box section fittings for storing tools, etc in. With the eventual idea of making a sort of work station. So it needs some rigidity but also need to be light. I was hopeful of using aluminium composite board. To give some sort of ides of strength and weight. But I need a cheap source in the UK. Short of turning to piracy any ideas please. Not just suppliers but also alternatives. Thanks Izzy
  9. Well here's the last of the tale of the missing tail After a trip to the hairdresser to have her hair at it glorious Celtic best. A little plastic surgery on her arm And even a trip to the dry cleaners to get her "Cutty Sark" freshened up. But sadly still a little camera shy. And even a brand new background to show her full statuesque 10mm hight. This one shows some of her best features I thinks is the best way of putting it
  10. That would be perfect for the tail thanks. As for the suggestion I use 5x magnification on a good day. Most days it's 20x or nothing. Mainly because I can't find the magnifier without the magnifier. thanks for the compliments. I did this at 5 am as I couldn't sleep it took me about ten mins, thanks to acrylics, she's now had a new prosthetic just need to paint it to match and fix the tail. Great tip there. Izzy Finally managed to get a camera to focus somewhere near at least you can see her at her best ish and get a sense of scale Enjoy. I hope.
  11. Hi. They are incredibly similar. I wonder if airfix did mine from the same parts as there are several holes in the deck and such that arnt used. Even don't to the cradles at the back which I've not added yet as I was struggling with the paints. Got that sorted now just need to crack on and hope I don't snap any more bits off.
  12. Hi Ho, Fellow nautical engineers. Just a quick update. I've at last found a paint that both sticks but also dries. I've just got remove the other paint. But that's simple enough just give a dirty look and it should fall off. But celebrate I decided to pay homage to Nannie her self as you can see below As you can see I've taken a few school boy liberties with her as seemed only right. After all it is my ship
  13. Thanks for all that. Especially the paint job. As the gunports are mor striking it just seems more natural to follow what's ther which they have but not the ports. So it's harder to tell from most images. I'm glad the explanation for the ropewalk spinner was clear. Now can you explain it to me :-). I've been doing some maths as regards the torque needed to turn it and it's only 0.2 lb/ft. So I think I'll get away with the design as I'll only be doing thin ish ropes but I enjoy knot work in full size so now I can at least make short lengths and perhaps lay them out an a knot board to go along with the nautical theme. As for the face plate all that does is hold the shaft from wobbling the only thing actuall holding them in place is a M3 bole through the back of the tube which goes right through and the gear at the front. So if I have to change a gear it out with the hammer... It's supprising how strong glues are once they've cured. I went to a tool show at the beginning of the months and was asking a chap about his glue and if it was waterproof. He's said so long as you put two coats on but you have to wait until the first coats fully cured. That would be about four to six weeks...! I just hope it stick well as the guarentee will have run out before the first lots set.
  14. Another thing bugging me. Why are the hammocks put along the edges of the deck in the open where they are highly likely to get soaked. And after a hard day slaving over a hot canon the lat thing you'd want is a soggy bed‽ Or is it as it looks a rudimentary attempt at defences against small arms fire or may be even grape shot?
  15. On the subject if the great Vicky. I was watching a documentary about the Chatham Dockyard. And they had a huge 5+ meter long model of her used in the film "That Hamilton Woman". The thing that struck me and has all along is the lines along the sides don't follow any obvious landmarks. Such as '3" above and below the gun ports. But this model did. I know movies even British ones do whatever they like. But why are the lines so 'random' for want of a better word? Because if I remember right, very little chance of that but never mind. The yellow/orang/umber stripes stop part way through some of the gunports so that the top is black and the bottom is the other colour. Does any one know why?
  16. And if this summer you hear of a bloke found tangled to death by his own imploding ropewalk it's probably me. Now where did I put that box of matches, can of petrol and the TNT?
  17. I'm supprized no one has asked the most obvious question "how are they held on?" As there are no bolts and no cotter pins. Yes it will have a front plate. Removed so as to show my insanity, sorry ingenuity. I've even manage to create a rope walk to a scale ⅓ of a mile. That is three and a half meters that folds up when not in use. All I've got to do is see if Bolton a watt are still making steam engines to drive it.‽
  18. That one is there to enable a stable tension, ie pulling from three different sides, if I make a rope from just three strand. By using the two other gears at the top of the image against the main drive gear. And the two either side of that gear are there for the same reason except to use four strands. The fun begins when you thread twelve of the thirteen simultaneously. As four twist one way and eight the other if this is done at the same time as laying a worm rope vital that this is twisted again in the opposite direction. Then you end up with a very complex braided, of a sort, rope that's as flexible as an iron bar. Even in miniture. So well spotted but not as you thought an error just an over zealous need for ultimate usability. All I've got to do now is find some 1mm wire stong enough to stand the torque but soft enought to make very "interesting" hooks...
  19. And it might just be a case of... And here's another quote but a nice simple one. Don't want to out do the master. A case of "the enigin's canne take any more cap'n" and a small clue for those under thirty. It may just blow all the dilithiam crystals.
  20. Seeing as I haven't even started yet I thought I'd pay some attention to making better ropes. Well to make a short story long. Either I couldn't decide on how many strands I might use ore I was bored and it kept growing. Personally I blame the kids. I knew I should not have left my 2 year old grandson near the maccano...:-) And before anyone asks it can do anywhere between two and eight strand in unilatereral as well as lining and braid twelve around a core up to 3mm. Only slightly over board?‽ :-/ Well the parts were there and I got carried away and it has a gear ratio of 28:1 so It will either burst into flames, melt or implode. Either way it will be fun. Just keep the fallout shelter and extinguisher to hand
  21. Your right of course. It was just a shock. Thirty years ago the models were so crisp and fitted together with very little effort. Apart from the intentional redesigns. Such as that crucial bit being eaten by the dog. But all I'm after from this is something I can say look I did this. I won't do my james Cagney impersonation from White Heat. Let's just say I'd be on top of the world. Warts and all. I'm getting as bad as Dafi. I'll leave you to work out what quotes are which. Just give your selves a gold star if you get it right. Anyway back the the CS. Having looked at a lot of images throught the ages and other discussions about how she should look. I think I'll sail away from the post inferno look. And aim more for the mental image of how I think she looked. And if I'm wrong no one will know. And CS has hand so many paint jobs it's hard to say which is right anyway. At the moment I'm struggling to grasp the basics such as glue that actually goes only where you want it. And new fangled acrylic paints. Which considering I did an arts based degree ten years ago. I should know but I'm still used to the little tin pots of enamel. But my lungs aren't. And acrylics "usually" dry quicker. On a mixed note. My disabilities have been playing havoc with my ship building as all I've managed to do is build these two bits I've also managed to find the only pot of White acryilic I had doesn't cover very well... I've found the only black acryilic that won't dry... And created a new spot the error competition... So all in all I not only give you two movie references to wonder about I also give you added value as to what's missing. Neither very hard. But better than Dafi he only give you one quote at a time :-);-) So I'll sail off until I've done a little more damage. Thanks for the support Sorry the images are upside down I blame the nut behind the camera my self...
  22. Just spotted you've done the Santa Maria. I've got that waiting in the wings. I don't think they know enough about her to even be able to quote a scale though. So should be fun as even the kit makers are guessing :-)
  23. No sorry this is the airfix model. But I can see where your coming from as it was only when I looked at your name I realised that it wasn't CS. I think they all went throught so many changes in there careers and the design was about as good as it could get. That they were all so very similar.
  24. Thanks for your two cents worth as it will save me far more than two cents. Having to use trial and error. Personal preferences are very under rated. Thanks
  25. Thanks for this as its the lighter colours I'm struggling with most. I just wish there'd been the Internet forty years ago in staged of just the playground for hints.
