  1. Thank you Rich, when trying this lathe, you understand what rigidity means. Here is the first scratchbuilt I did from the drawdings of Harold Hahn. While building it, the NMM said they did not have any plans from a back view. Few years later I saw one drawing in a magazine.
  2. Mark I surely will not pretend I can write a book about light shaping. The easiest way to use a speedlight is in TTL mode (through the lens). The flash follows the lens adjustment. Speedlight location and distance are the first things to check. There are some kinds of pictures that I like to understand. Some are available and some you can create by experimentation. Reading is interesting but viewing little films on you tube is often easier. Examples are subject like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wODqXBe9rNo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-ro-ST3iuo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAbSn7VkhmY
  3. Last autumn, I did follow 2 photography sessions. The main goal was to learn how to shoot in Manual Mode instead of Automatic. If I compare the results today with pictures taken before, I would say without any hesitations that it was a good thing. As a general rule in model ship building we do not use a Speedlight to photograph our models, the main reason being not to have highlights. But if we learn to use a Speedlight, we also can learn not to fall in these traps. To learn how to use it, takes longer than a 3 days week-end but I did my homework, and today I can take a decent picture with Speedlights. Most of the picture I take, I use a Speedlight with a diffuser on it, the last I bought was $7as in the first picture. A very good Speedlight can have 150 Watts/seconds, but more than often it is not enough to have a rich vivid look. I did read many things about Monolight and I viewed many videos on you tube. I chose my new kit and obviously I will have to learn how to use it well, but at the end, higher quality pictures will be the result. In this first picture, and for a different test, I added some light just on the milling machine. Also, for the first time I did not need to adjust the camera to take into account fluorescent light, this is a big change.
  4. Yes Ben, here in Quebec Pharmacie Jean Coutu. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsromx6LW74 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8ceYMtnYGM http://www.mypix.com/fr/fr/ http://photo.walgreens.com/walgreens/storepage/storePageId=MemoryBooks etc etc In fact, I think that it is probably a new kind of service offer where there are photo development and in this case print photo online
  5. Since few months, I saw that it is possible to order photos regrouped in a catalog. The last one I saw is at our local pharmacy. I tried 8.5 X11 inches, hard cover, 26 pages full size photos, for less than $40.
  6. If we look forward, the next exposition will be this autumn . This morning was the press conference and I tried a presentation for the occasion. I will rework the name card later.
  7. For some mysterious reason, this is easier to appreciate if the image is turned upside down. I would even bet which part was done last...
  8. Enough for the congratulations, the truth is the opposite. I did not win anything, it is just my entry which was in this category. The model was evaluated by 2 judges and unfortunately one of them did not like my work particuliary for the choice of wood. This same judge gave me 9/15 points for historic accuracy but I forgive him: he did not know that Jean Boudriot wrote 4 books about this subject... Presentation sheet for that project
  9. Thank you very much everyone. Such designation probably means journeyman with experience. Experience is something constantly growing. These are old pictures. I am sure I could do better ones today!
  10. High Carabrente, for the 74 guns, Pulley size is related to the rope diameter.
  11. The first try to take pictures inside the model ship was with a web cam, low resolution, later changed for another one with a higher resolution. For those who remember MSW 1.0, here is an example, picture 1. Then to control the angle of the camera, tubes were used with adaptor at the end. With Le Fleuron, new options are explore. First a tripod with a horizontal extension was used. Unfortunately, the height of the extension cannot be adjust, picture 3. I have been reading since few months about moonlight and light stand to hold it. One of the versions is a boom stand. Unlike the ‘’boom tripod’’ the height of the boom light stand can be adjust. Few words about lamps, first for Greg, here is another one from Burton bought from EBay, picture 4. On the picture 5, there are 2 lamps for which I paid around the same price; one from Dazor halogen type and the other one from Aamsco. I also want to point another model from Dazor. I think that this LED light model is probably one the best lamp available on the market below $500, http://www.dazor.com/led-desk-lamps.html The Aamsco lamp was bought used from a place similar to http://www.pemed.com/ in the lights section, they sell used medical gadgets. The Xenon light was also bought from another similar place. Again, if you take the time to look carefully, you can find a used lamp of high quality at the price of an ordinary lamp and the idea to have such a kind of lamp is that you can easily see objects that you wound not see otherwise. David I would say it is impossible to produce a flawless model. It happens frequently after taking pictures to see details which need to be corrected, so the first one who benefits is me. Often the camera benefits view angle that we do not have.
  12. These last days I am making some adaptors. Here is one of these intended to hold a camera inside the model.
  13. Hi Toni, Pilling Weck Xenon light source Hi Grant, Optivisor would probably satisfy most of your needs. The lens number 4 is the one I use the most. Also I like to use the Optivisor, when grinding and polishing small metal parts, it is safer for the eyes and I can observe the part closer while working.
  14. http://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/topic/327-le-fleuron-by-g-bordeleau-scale-124/page-14#entry198591 Just put a picture about this subject
  15. first picture is a needle head. Different lenses, different tasks; question which come back regularly 1-2- precision small work, longer focal length allows to work with a straight back. Very useful for splinter 3-6- closer focal length than 1-2, the work must be closer than 1 foot. To have a comfortable working position, the table must be higher like jewelry table 4-5 lightweight version 7-8- the use of magnifier automatically means that you will need more light to see clearly. By example,7 is use when I take picture to the microscope. Also the weight of the light is held by the head strap. A good LED headlight can also be an interesting avenue to see 1-2- 6X+ 3,5X focal lenght > 18’’ 3-6- focal lenght < 10’’ 4-5- installs on eye wear 7- 8- frontal light 9- magnifying glass
  16. Mark, The little one was part of a 3 parts project 74 guns: 1/192 1 foot long 1/48 4 feet long 1/24 8 feet long
  17. Ben, there is a large scale of reaction ranging from indifference to admiration. Greg, the support is visible on the second picture.
  18. In the area where I stay, there are no expositions are model ship only. The kind of exposition we have are for what I would call Mixed hobby!
  19. Bill, this model is 100% scratchbuilt. I will not install sails. The model would not pass through the doors. The model is made like admiralty style, planked on one side only and no masts. The only blocks I will do are for the cannons. I did not study plans for the running rigging. David, I bought this vise from a jewelry tool store in Montreal, but it is coming from: http://www.grstools.com/workholding/vises-and-blocks/standard-block.html If you want to buy only one, buy this one, because it is not 1, 2, or 3 axis but this is a multi-axis adjustment. Also when I push a mini carving knife, the vise is adjusted so that the motion is from down to top which makes the movement more controllable. This vise was created for engraving, it does allows the knife to be pushed also in a circle motion with an adjustable tension mechanism.
  20. GRS ball vise are used by engravers. Highly versatile to hold a part.
  21. Hi Janos http://www.wiltontools.com/us/en/p/2-axis-precision-angular-vise-2-jaw-width-1-jaw-depth/11703 Wilton 2 axis differents jaws wide
  22. Alan ,look at this rising table for watchmakers. Depending of the precision of the work you are doing, adjustment of the height greatly makes you job easier. Chair height adjustment cannoy provide this. When you will realize this, you will ask yourself why did I not use that before. Also note the front of the table with an angle very useful for somebody working with the left hand.
  23. Good morning Hans, The construction of Le Fleuron began 2 years ago. At this rate, at least 3 years yet to go. For the previous one, the 74 guns, 8 feet long instead of 7 feet for Le Fleuron. Time to build, full speed ahead, 2,5 years.
