ratlines-At what scale do you just use an overhand knot?
skipper1947 replied to bear's topic in Masting, rigging and sails
And, for anybody who (like me) is now scratching your head and wondering if you dare ask what a clove hitch is, I found this helpful youtube video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aewgmUeHpuE -
I think I did something similar to what Catopower described. I can't remember for sure (and can't tell by looking), but I think my stern windows and frames were some sort of thin plywood?? I believe I dry-brushed the brass color on after painting the inner sections. Here is a picture, it is my first attempt with my cellphone and I admit it might not be that clear: Skip

For Beginners -- A Cautionary Tale

I will always remember the time my wife was showing a painting of the USS Constitution to one of her friends, and announced it was the Cutty Sark (her friend nodded knowingly). Innocence of such techie things, is one of the reasons I find her irresistible (I guess that is sexist.. I am a terrible person). -

Funny how those mistakes turn out to be invisible to your friends and family. I actually pointed out mistakes when I showed my model, until a friend politely said the model looked great and wondered why I was telling him it didn't. -
Who's big toe is that in the one picture? Hah hah.. That model works out to about 44 inches, I hope you have a place in mind to display it. Is it single planked also? I will have to visit their site and check it out. Good luck with it Don, it looks wonderful.

Do you use thin CA Don and Doc (Dave?) I am afraid I am too clumsy and often have CA glue ooze into the opening, making a nice dark spot on the wood. I have had better luck though, with thick CA. I guess I haven't commented for a while on your model Don, but it really is coming along nicely! Skip

Great story, thanks for the chuckle. The boy is lucky he has a dad who is out there sharing with him. -

I like this idea. If the person has simply lost interest, chances are, he won't be here reading the PM anyway, so no harm done. But if he is lurking and scratching his head in bewilderment, such a friendly nudge might be just the thing he needs to speak up. -

Heck, I have been building models (with breaks) for about 60 years, I still can't build anything to compare with the beautiful models seen in here. (I maintain those plastic WWII kits built as a kid, are legitimate models, and not sticky lumps of glue). Skip -

I think it is common among many (myself included), to get all enthusiastic about a new hobby, then; when the new-car-smell is gone, to loose interest. It is nothing to do with the hobby itself, just human nature. Witness that boat sitting among the weeds in the back yard, or that guitar gathering dust in the corner (I am guilty of both, as well as others I can't recall at the moment). Sometimes, you just have to try a bunch of different hobbies that strike your fancy, hoping you find one that sticks. One suggestion I would make- is to not make a build log on your first project, just read what others are doing, and ask questions. Of course, I could be mistaken. Skip -
I second this opinion. I would love to build a static model of one of those plumb bow yachts from the 1930s like the Bluebird of Chelsea; big, beautiful and in-your-face full of detail. I know there are scratch plans for her, but as a scratch builder, I make a good piano player (and I can't play the piano). http://csmee.org.nz/featuremodel---bluebird.php Skip

I have found that my favorite part of model building, is the phase that I am about to start. My least favorite is the part that I just finished. So, all-in-all; I love/hate each phase in turn. Having said that, I do like tying ratlines. I get into a sort-of zen like state, except I am focused on the ratlines instead of my breathing. Disclaimer: I know nothing about Zen, so any relationship between my opinion and reality is purely coincidental. Skip

Looks good Don. I guess that is putting on the first layer of planking; the hard way.

I built this kit years ago, and don't remember much of the details. Do you have a picture of the sheet you are talking about? Skip

Hello. Sorry to be dense, but I would like to confirm that the two photos in your post: "15_KARAKA A4 KOLOR" 1 and 2 are the "Ragusian Carrack" in your text, correct? Also, there are small differences between the two photos (figurehead and stern decorations), just curious about that. Thanks for your help. Skip

I like it David. I tried googling "sailing ship gun rigging" and found at least one picture showing the same method of coiling gun lines. I know we are discouraged from pasting photos because of copyright, but I believe it is OK to past the link to the web page (right?) http://www.shipmodeling.ca/images/01079.jpg

I just noticed your build log here David. You skylight looks great near as I can tell. Also, I like your deck planking, did you do anything to the planks or did they come that color? Skip

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
