  1. I like it David. I tried googling "sailing ship gun rigging" and found at least one picture showing the same method of coiling gun lines. I know we are discouraged from pasting photos because of copyright, but I believe it is OK to past the link to the web page (right?) http://www.shipmodeling.ca/images/01079.jpg
  2. I just noticed your build log here David. You skylight looks great near as I can tell. Also, I like your deck planking, did you do anything to the planks or did they come that color? Skip
  3. Why do we feel others need to "justify" the way they pursue a hobby? If I need to the way I pursue model building, I might as well go to work. I choose to not do that.
  4. Just FYI, the latest e-mail promotion from Model Expo. I hope it is OK to paste in most of the e-mail as it specifies which kits are on sale. 5. Thanks philo426. On my way to look at the youtube video. Later, that same day.. Wow, you have 60 videos of different model and guitar subjects. Cool. And your paddel wheels look good. Regards, Skip
  6. Looks good philo426. I haven't seen too may solid hull kits of that size (actually, I haven't seen that many solid hull kits). How are the instructions? Regards, Skip
  7. Just FYI, when I clicked on the modelik.pl link, McAfee Web Advisor popped up a big scary warning, and advised not going there. It might just be a "false positive" but I backed out, just to be safe.
  8. I suspect this is not the recommended method, but once I first glued the plates on using thick CA glue. When finished I um, "painted" the copper plates with a thin coat of 2 hour epoxy.. This basically encapsulated the plates in epoxy resin. That was over 10 years ago, to this day none have come off, however they still look as bright and shiny as a new penny.. (It was Sergal's Cutty Sark). I can't remember if I actually used a throw-away paint brush, or some sort of rag and gloves for application, though whatever it was, would likely not be good for much afterwards. Skip
  9. Just got another e-mail from Model Expo. After posting all these, it occurs to me that I should mention; I am in no way affiliated with Model Expo, though I do think highly of them and wish them continued success. Model Expo e-mail follows: ================================================================================ WE'RE SO SORRY! We encountered major technical problems during last week's email offer. 10. Not to be picky, but I am not sure that this will encourage new comers to ask questions. We are individuals, and as such, probably come at this hobby with differing perspectives. There may be those who, after working all day; just want to fiddle around with little bits of wood for relaxation. Ship model kits should not be regarded as different than any other kind of kit. It doesn't have to teach you the details of ship building, but at least should be clear in telling you to glue stick A into hole B. Sorry, I didn't mean to argue. I hope this is viewed as a polite discourse. Skip
  11. Thanks Dan. I must plead guilty of ignorance regarding Mr. Passarro. I had heard the name mentioned in other discussions, but assumed he must be a mystical figure living in far-off Guru Land. I had no idea he was on this site. Skip
  12. Thanks for the tip Tom. I have heard Passaro mentioned several times. Is there a handy way to know which kits are his? The Model Expo sites appears off-line at the moment, so I couldn't check around there. They do have their 55% sale going on now, so this might be a good time to investigate his kits. Skip
  13. I hesitated here, because I don't want to start a debate Joel; but I think Jazzchip was referring to those who would not otherwise ask anything. Telling them to "simply ask, whether the question seems idiotic to the asker, or embarrassing, or revealing of the ignorance thereof," would probably not make them any less shy. Those who are not too shy or embarrassed would presumably ask away in public so this would not affect them. Just my two cents worth. I will get off the soap box now. Skip
  14. Sometimes the drawings are not any good either. I struggled with one where most parts supplied were larger than the dimensions listed on the plan (or too large for the hull), one sheet of the plans did not agree with a second sheet, the rigging in the photos did not agree with the rigging on the rigging sheet, and the keel supplied in the kit was not designed the same as that shown in the instructions. I think that about covers the issues, it has been a while.. Skip
  15. At least the English section appears to be written by somebody familiar with the English language. Skip
  16. Just FYI (again), I just got this e-mail from Model Expo extending their 55% off sale: =================================================================== WE'RE EXTENDING OUR 55% OFF SITEWIDE SALE Your response to our 55% off sale was so great that we're extending it through Thanksgiving weekend! 17. ..Oh.. I just re-read my original post, and see I said it ended on Oct. 23 instead of Nov. 23.. Now I understand. Sorry about that. It was a typo as Brian said. Skip
  18. I am not sure what is meant by this news being late, I posted it on 11/20 and it ends on 11/23. It is only a 3 day sale. The text from the e-mail is pasted below in red. Also, first it says it is everything on their website, then it specifically mentions Model Expo products, so I am not sure if it's Corel kits are included or not (and I guess I am too lazy to find out) ============================================= WE'RE FINALLY IN MIAMI After months of planning and lots of hard work, we're settling in at our new Miami factory and will resume production on Monday. 19. In case you are not on their mailing list, I just got a new e-mail from Model Expo regarding a 3 day "After Move" celebration sale. I just looked and it is not listed on their web site (which still shows the old sale). It ends midnight Monday, Oct 23. The sale code is DEAL55 and is a 55% discount taken at the checkout page. Back orders are included. I assume (hope) they don't mind me spreading the word here. Skip
  20. Check out this ad on Amazon, it says it has 26 parts. I can imagine somebody getting this for a small child thinking it will be simple. http://www.amazon.com/Heller-Soleil-Royal-Model-Building/dp/B0002HZZ4M Nice looking model though. Skip
  21. But note their web specials page now says: "Sorry, no back orders on these great buys." where previously it said back orders were welcome. You would need to check the detail page of a model to see if it is stock or not. I checked 4 or 5 and all but one of them said "Expected availability within 15 to 30 days. Reserve your item now, your card will not be charged until we ship!" which I think likely indicates it is a back order? (not sure). SKip
  22. Cape Cod Catboats have long been one of my fantasy boats (when I fantasize about actually having a real boat). I have eyed this model from time to time. It sounds like you are pleased with the overall quality. I look forward to following along. Skip
  23. I am puzzled why they would make a piece out of plywood, if it has to be bent (any kit; not this one specifically). Skip
  24. Thanks for your helpful response regarding the plywood. If I understand correctly, it is partially cut through via laser but not completely. I once built a model where I got sheets of wood with lines printed on them and nothing more. I had to cut them out with an xacto knife (having nothing more sophisticated). The result was not exceptionally pretty. Skip
  25. She really is a great looking model Mike. I would like to ask a question regarding your very first post, just to be sure in my own mind. Do you mean they simply printed an outline on the plywood, and you had to cut the whole thing out with a knife? I have eyed this kit from time to time, but my ability to cut out something by following a line free-hand, is pretty limited (i.e. I usually end up with a mess). Sorry for the dumb question. Skip
