Erik W reacted to Dan Vadas in 18th Century Longboat by Dan Vadas - FINISHED - 1:100 scale - BOTTLE - using most of Chuck's Practicum
Thanks Sal, Bob and Per.
I used furniture wax on the wooden plug, and glued each plank by wiping the glue over the seam instead of trying to glue the edge.
To prevent the hull from spreading while fitting the ribs I made a jig. I had that problem with my Cutter - this will do the job nicely :
Here's a tip for edge sanding very small or thin planks - another jig :

Eric,
yes, I used left over scrap wood from the kit, There's plenty of it. I made it from the piece of wood that the oars where laser cut from.It was the perfect thickness for the tiller

Mike,
Looks great. Did you use left over kit supplied wood for the tiller, or something of your own?

Dan, great work so far. I was wondering how do you keep the planking from sticking to the wooden plug while gluing it in place?

Thanks George, and no I don't need any help with drinking the contents .
I've finished the planking. It turned out even better than my 1:48 scale cutter :
There were no problems at all when I pulled it off the plug. Nothing needed cleaning up inside :

Thank you Mark, Daniel and David.
The idea is to fit a mast and oars Daniel. The shape lends itself really well for this. BTW - I'm glad I didn't have to buy the bottle - I saw one in a liquor shop last week for $70.00. Though it WAS full .
The first pic shows how I held the deadeyes for drilling:
Nine deadeyes (1 spare which I've already needed) next to a couple of Chuck's 1/8" (smallest) blocks :
A bit more work while waiting for the last of the planks to dry - I've made the four Chains. I used 0.25mm brass wire (the bottle was "wrapped" in it) which I silver soldered and blackened. I also drilled a 0.25mm (#80) hole in the end of each for the "bolt".

I've carved out the area where the pintles will go on the rudder, this will give a better bond and the pintles are flush with the rudder. I hand carved the tiller with an arch instead of the straight version, this was time consuming but quite satisfying after it was done. now I will proceed with painting the rudder.

I installed the oar locks, I used masking tape to try and mark the proper locations and spacing between each lock. My efforts had a less than perfect outcome but I can live with it.

One last photo for a while (I'm heading to Wales and western England for vacation for a couple of weeks ). I attached the risers. I made jigs out of styrene to make sure the height was uniform for the entire length of the riser. I glued the riser to 5 or 6 frames at a time with PVA, holding the jig in place above, so had time to adjust it, and then moved on to the next section.
The photo isn't that great. the bright halogen light I use for photographs makes the riser's finish look splotchy, it's not in person. I scribed fairly deep grooves in both risers. But they disappeared when I soaked the riser in water to get the edge bend at the bow! I am annoyed, but not worried that it will detract from the overall look. I've tested the stain/WOP on a scribed thwart and it holds the scribe fine.

Erik,
that looks very nice and don't bother about the splotchies. I have a hard time to detect them.
As for the varnish, I have an ample collection of Min-Wax varnishes that I have blended back and forth. And found the mixtures that I like.
It's all in the builder eyes and perspective how a model will turn out.
Don't be disgourage - it will be amazing!
Chuck got me back on the right track!

A couple of quick shots of the two platforms. I wasn't comfortable gluing the edges of the boards. I didn't want to have glue smudges before I stain/poly. I used left over .020" planking material along the bottoms and glued the boards to them. This also reinforces the platforms to keep them flat when I stain/poly. A considerable amount of sanding was necessary to get the bow platform to snug down low enough in the hull.
