CDW reacted to Egilman in Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat by ccoyle - FINISHED - WAK - 1/33 - CARD
Yep the petal cowling and scoops are always a problem, but there are ways to deal with them...
Years back I remember paper modelers on some of the fora arguing about them not being true paper modeling though...
Like any medium, it has it's absolutists....

CDW reacted to ccoyle in Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat by ccoyle - FINISHED - WAK - 1/33 - CARD
So, if you remember your F4Fs well, then you'll recall that the Wildcat had a shockingly complicated (and manually retractable!) landing gear. Here's where we get to see that a 'card' model typically includes media other than card -- wire and styrene rod in this case. First we have the bits that go inside the gear bay, twelve pieces in all.
And then we have to start building the complex struts themselves. Like most all card kits, this one includes templates for making the various wire or styrene pieces -- they're just not usually this labor-intensive. So far I'm pleased with how these are turning out.
BTW, I'm not showing you the finished cowling scoop. The poor Wildcat's nose really is a weakness in this kit. 😑

CDW reacted to AJohnson in Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat by ccoyle - FINISHED - WAK - 1/33 - CARD
Chris, I thought dealing with a plastic version of the Wildcat’s undercarriage was a challenge. I was wondering how the “card-side” would deal with that ! You have my admiration / sympathy!

My new compressor arrived after a long week of making up the engine and cleaning parts. A task, not to underestimate wit this kit. Every part has to be inspected, sanded, scratched with a blade, the age of the mold forms is obviously. I will show you a total un-Tamiya look with lots of scratched off material only from the turbo system and gear housing .
Finally I had to test my new Sparmax compressor and what better to try is spraying yellow onto the body parts. I really like the result, where only minimal polishing will be needed before I apply the decals. I sprayed the heavy thinned Tamiya LP8 with low pressure at about 13 psi or 0,9 bar.
Next test was spraying lots of the innards with different metallic colors, AK's Extreme Metal Aluminum and from the Tamiya LP range titan gold, titan silver, gun metal, pearl silver and finally semi matte black for the air intakes on the upper body.
Cheers Rob

Phew, decals are on and I, as an old decal coward have to say, these Cartograph decals are the real deal. They are very opaque and fit like a glove, if you made a precise masking job between yellow and white. Even the superfine pinstripes fittet, bordering the yellow. For the first time, I used Tamiya Decal adhesive and so far, I have no complaints. The standard one was used on flat surfaces and the additional softener type was used on contours. There is one tiny fold on the curved front black stripe, but I hope with some stronger softener this will vanish.
Before decaling, I wet sanded all the body parts with 6000 and 8000 grit and the surfaces were absolutely smooth and the color borders got rid of the tiny edge from masking. The rear wing was resprayed, because I polished through the edges on a tiny spot. I painted all the rivets on the body with a precision brush for a little bit more detail.
Cheers Rob

The photos look great. I can't even see the sink marks you described so they must be very small.

Alan see photos of my 1:35 figures with bases. I just glued them to the diorama base then covered them with Woodlands Scenics material, hides them well

And of course there is the great old pre-decimalisation British currency. Based on 12 pennies to a shilling so more sixes there. Not to mention balls in an over

I spent some time today adding the upper layer to the main tower roof. Its a complicated layout. The numbers on all teh pieces make it pretty straightforward apart from a couple of odd pieces which need a bit of extra thought. The instruction / guide sheet is of little / no help - its more just a general outline of the build.
There is going to be some fiddly brickwork here.
Assembling the structure has made it easy to see which elements are closed in and have roofs and should be lit. I was wrong in my initial assessment and only about five parts will need lights so I have rather overordered on the leds. I'm sure they will come in useful and I suppose I could add a few in the base of the towers in the curtain wall
The next step will be to assemble the roof onto the main tower but before then I need the leds so there may be a few days pause. I should have planned better but I hadn't expected to move quite so fast on the last bit of teh wall.
Thanks for all the comments, helpful information and the likes
Alan
