"Meteor' continues to creep slowly ahead. I haven't had much actual building time as the museum has been pretty busy and I've been spending a lot of time talking ti visitors.  I've also been spending time in discussions regarding the new project I mentioned. There have been a few hiccoughs along the way but the 'powers that be' at the museum are now keen to see the project go ahead.  There is a (hopefully) final meeting planned for January 19th to finalise matters for all stakeholders. The meeting could have been much sooner, but during the holiday period its difficult to get everybody together at the same time.

Here's a photo of the 'Meteor' showing the current state with capping rails rough fitted.

Baby steps... How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time... Whichever euphemism works best for us, lol. Not much progress to actually show off, but I do have a few pics anyway. I'll describe what I did first though. There was a slight gap where the sonar bulge met the rest of the hull. From online pics, there doesn't seem to be any line there on the real deal. I couldn't even make out a weld bead. What to do to fill the gap? I decided to use stretched sprue and Tamiya Extra Thin. Multiple applications of my favorite solvent based adhesive were applied. I will let this sit for 24 hours before I sand it back so I don't start sanding into soft, goopy plastic. I also got my holes drilled through the bottom of the hull and a chunk of cheap 1x4 pine to have a solid working base for now and have this ready later when I have something decent to mount it on.

Welcome aboard, Tyler. You will find plenty of resources on this site. There are tutorials on planking, for instance. (More > Planking techniques) Check out other build logs and then start one of your own.

Hey, I have actually been browsing this forum for quite some time but have never introduced myself. My name is Tyler, I live in Canada and am currently getting to the end of my first build the Occre Polaris. I am hoping to move on to a frigate next then the montanes also by Occre. I do currently have Occres Diana waiting to be build but after seeing other builds and how low the gallery is compared to the gun deck it throws me off quite a bit. Anyone have any suggestions on other frigates. How is AL’s Hermione?

I think my biggest problem when ship building is planking the hull. Understanding how to do it correctly and efficiently.

Look forward to learning from all you on this forum. Have a good one.

Hi Ken! Glad to have you here.

Small bit of progress to show, but it took a considerable amount of sanding. The hull is now free of mold seam lines. There was the most slightest of steps as well but it sanded out easily enough without leaving a trench. I also attached the sonar bulge on the bow. Now I just have to blend that in. After that, I'll measure and drill holes to allow for mounting the hull to brass pedestals and a wood base.

PSA: The bow's tip is fragile. I almost broke it off when maneuvering the hull around while sanding. The tip hit the wall behind me and bent. I was able to bend it back thankfully. I'll be protecting it while not working on that area from here on out.

    Thanks for looking in!

Finally closed!   Took a bit longer then expected because I was quite sick last week with a flu and fever, but feeling good now so I could do the last planks.
I used some 1mm pear that I had lying around, because I had run out of the lime wood. Not because Chris didn't supply enough, but because I redid such large areas.
This gave me the change to get a bit familiar with pear wood and how it behaves, so maybe that gives me a bit of an advantage for the final layer.
I couldn't get the first layer exactly as I wanted, without mistakes and knowing exactly what I did, but I have learned a lot!
So hoping that I learned enough to get a decent second layer that I could be happy about and leave it unpainted. Otherwise there is always the option to paint
it white if it's not too great

Now first some sanding and filling here and there to get a nice smooth base for the second layer.

Hello, my name is Christopher and I'm starting down this exciting rabbit hole of building model ships! I'm a sailor by trade and have recently retired to Wyoming. I miss the sea, but I'm looking forward to continuing my love for the water by building various ships. I have recently invested in the Model Shipways Shipwright Series. I'm looking forward to starting on the Lowell Grand Banks Dory in the upcoming week. I have already picked up a copy of "The Dory Book" and have read most of it, and its been fascinating to learn about these boats.

I'm looking forward to learning and growing in this hobby.

    Completing the Headworks
Gluing the Main rails in place is always a critical business.

    2971
I fitted the Starboard side first which went on without issue, the pieces held using pva and sectioning clips.

    2980
I took the precaution of marking the level above the capping rail on the Port side rail to assist fitting.

    2978

    2975
Always a relief once this part is completed.

    2992
I am pleased to see that the level looks good athwartships.

Not part of the kit is the Saddle.

    2996
This is a section of timber triangular in shape, that spans the Main rails where they converge at the back of the head and effectively ties them together.

    2982
For the convenience of the crew I have added two additional seats of ease positioned at the aft end of the gratings adjacent to the False Rail.
In the Indy kit the False rail is an integral part of the Main Rail, and contains the Capsquare for the Boomkin.

The Headwork construction battle is now over, but I still need to do some tidying up and redo’s on the paintwork, but that I can do at my leisure.

Ok... Earlier I mentioned a YouTube channel. It's new to me and I'm learning as I go. If you wish to view a video version of my USS Curtis Wilbur exploits, you can see them at the following link:

    https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2OLZJD_BYzN_99bynZ8wyQ

That's right, it's called Patrick's Scale Studio; don't blame me, blame AI. AI's channel name ideas were waaaaay better than mine. I'm just trying something new and I get that some of it may be remedial for most, but I also used my wife and two daughters as sounding boards and their advice was "Pretend like I don't know anything about this hobby, and truly I don't; just convince your audience in case they're like me." At least they're supportive 😆

That said, I'll gladly receive any and all constructive criticism. I don't necessarily put that to use always, but I can take it.

    Thanks!
    Patrick

The I Love Kit instructions would have you start on adding details and other highly breakable items to the main deck (Step 1) and then gluing that main deck and the aft deck in place on the hull (Step 2). If we lived in a perfect world, I could follow this. However, while I love the benefits of slide molding, there are mold seams and maybe a slight step in places on the hull that I think should be dealt with first. That and the bulbous part of the bow that accommodates the sonar takes me to Step 3 first. I will deal with the mold seams and a smooth transition for the sonar in the bow.

My next progress posting will hopefully include pictures of the completed hull.

    Thanks for looking in,
    Patrick

I like this model kit. Probably will end up in my stash at some point. I got to tour an Arleigh Burke-class some years ago in Newport, Rhode Island while attending the Navy's Senior Enlisted Academy. It was the USS McFaul (DDG-74).
